This is such a great restaurant, but the wait is pretty long. My sister and I decided to walk along the Embarcadero and we even went to a wine bar and heard some music while waiting for our food. Once our food came, it was delicious. I was disappointed that they don't make their own tortillas. That is my indication that it's a Mexican restaurant that goes above and beyond to make it original. I've been to La Katrina at least 6 times. Each time has been a great experience. I usually have chili verde. It's my favorite. The service is perfect and everyone seems to enjoy and appreciate the food. The last time I was there we had 10 in our party. We were really hungry when we arrived in Morro Bay as we had been traveling all morning and wanted to get some good California Mexican food! We looked around and found this place had good reviews - they did not disappoint! We had the chili relleno burrito with carnitas as well as a California burrito. Both were great and the portions are huge! The server (I wish I caught her name) was so friendly and we talked with her for a bit. So I can here yesterday evening and honestly I wasn't sure about it when we first arrived but once we tried the chips and salsa my hopes were super high, I had the best chipotle shrimp burrito I've ever had, it was big and full of flavor, I requested a spicy salsa on the side and oh boy it was super super hot! They have cold beer to go along with your food, service was 10/10 food was 20/10 drinks 10/10. I live in Covina ca but will definitely make the drive to try some other dishes. We had a fantastic meal at this family friendly restaurant. The staff was friendly and on it when it comes to service. As someone who was traveling with two young kids I was stoked that they offered breakfast and lunch options during lunch hours. One of my kids demolished their French Toast and eggs and the other very much enjoyed her nuggets and fries. Not exactly Mexican food and this is one reason this place is so great. They know what kids want I did get some Mexican food - the Morro Bay Burrito with shrimp. It was HUGE. The shrimp was fresh and this was a fantastic burrito. I'd also like to mention the salsa that came out with the chips was fantastic. Just spicy enough and full of flavor. The only complaint about this place is that it is 3+ hours from where I live. The food we ordered from this lovely spot recently was absolutely delicious. Portions were very good for the pricing and everything was super hot and really tasty. My boyfriend and I could not decide between the California burrito and the Ranchero burrito with the shredded beef so we got one of each and split them and both were delicious in their own right. Somehow this place managed to get crispy fries inside a burrito filled with so many other items I was pretty amazed that it worked well and they did not get soggy at all. Super yummy and my one and only complaint would of course be more steak because their carne asada was very tender and flavorful. The Ranchero burrito on the other hand was really just on a whole other level and was probably one of the best burritos I've eaten in a very long time. From the delicious Ranchero sauce which was a hint smoky and spicy to the super flavorful shredded beef and the perfectly cooked Chile relleno inside it really was stellar in all aspects. Oh but we didn't stop there! We wanted to try some of the homemade guacamole and chips so we got a side of that to try and also a side of the carne asada fries which I probably should have just made nachos instead since we had fries in the burrito but the fries were perfectly cooked and topped so well yet still crispy and hot and really just great! Perfect balance there. The guacamole could have used more spice for our tastes, so we ended up adding in a couple of cups of their red and green chili sauce and extra salt and pepper to it, and it was perfect once we did that. Tried to eat here yesterday. Have had lunch several times. The food is great. Yesterday we (4 of us) went for early lunch late breakfast. Ask the server if he would dry off outside seats so we could eat outside (had a dog with us). He was extremely rude about it. We were an inconvenience. Served on a sizzling hot molcajete, it featured a delightful combination of steak, chicken, chorizo, nopales, queso fresco, jalapeno, and Chile - Side of rice, beans and tortillas a true flavor explosion! To complement our meal, we indulged in horchata $5 and an orange Jarrito $4, two of my favorites while eating Mexican food. The restaurant offers ample seating options, allowing us to choose a cozy booth inside. The icing on the cake was the exceptional customer service we received throughout our visit. Had a delicious dinner last night. La Katrina was right next door to our hotel. We were starving and used Yelp to pick a place to eat. I ordered the carne asada tacos plate while my husband had the Katrina trio. They brought out chips and salsa to start. The salsa has a spicier kick than other places which I liked. Even the Coke was refreshing. I ended up getting two refills. The staff was super attentive and friendly. We brought our toddler and without asking, they brought him a plate so I could share my meat and rice with him. The food was delicious, flavorful, and not greasy. It was better than I had expected and we ate everything. My husband loved it so much he wants to try the breakfast this morning! Definitely recommend if you're in the Morro Bay area and want Mexican food. We brought our dog on this trip and sat outside on their patio. Came on a Monday evening and there was no wait. Inside the decor is nicely done, however the furniture itself is a little dated, reminds me of the "old lady" restaurants my great grandmother liked to frequent. But appearance is not a deal breaker for me. The have a daily special which my grandma had ordered as well as my son since it was $1 cheaper than the kids meal. My husband and I ordered the Chile Rellenos. And WOW! Chile Rellenos in restaurants can be hit or miss, either the sauce is bland or the Chile itself has been sitting for awhile. It takes a lot for a restaurant to get them right. And La Katrina got them right!!! They were the BEST Chile Rellenos I'd ever had from a restaurant. The sauce was flavorful and had a bit of spice. The cheese on the inside was melted beautifully and the batter for the chile wasn't soggy. Everything about it was perfect! I wish I had taken a photo of my meal so anyone reading could see how good it looked too. I was not really wanting Mexican food last night, but I'm SO glad my family chose it. read more

A Chef and the foodguy walk into the new Mexican Restaurant on Morro Bay Embarcadero, the Owner says Hi I'm Wendy. She has us from hello, mid afternoon we had her full attention and got the whole story on her new place. Okay I won't give away the story but the meal told us all we needed to know. Considering the establishment that survived here for years, the inside of La Katrina was lookin' great. booth seating around the dining room, tables in the middle. A Colorful paint scheme that sets a happy playful ambiance. Alright...alright...the menu is several pages but it's certainly not overcrowded with too many choices, you'll find what you want. Right then I ordered my go to Carnitas Burrito, Wendy suggested the Embarcadero style...Okay. Chef ordered his go to Shrimp burrito His was wet with red sauce, mine wet with green sauce and topped with melted cheese. The burritos were a good health size, protein ratio to other ingredients was good. Both burritos were delicious and two hungry guys were satisfied. Second time I've been and we've had problems. From the get go we were given grief because we had two service dogs with us. I understand that they have to stay under the table and no eating or drinking. But you don't have to give us attitude about it. Asking us more questions than the legal "what service they provide", which wasn't asked. Also, our server was much nicer to all the other guests. Barely spoke to us and only came to our table if she had to it seemed like. People that came in after us were served before us. She was jovial and joked around with other customers. But not us. Do not go to this restaurant if you have a service animal. They are very biased. Food is good but not worth the attitude from certain employees. Our server made us feel uncomfortable being there when we had every right to dine at this facility. read more

We topped off a recent sunset walk at Tidelands park with a test of this fairly new restaurant. What luck! Every bit that we had was very tasty and fresh, even the tortilla chips, rice and beans :-). No seriously, I had the seafood enchiladas and they were delicious, with a great very lively sauce (not hot). My friend had the alambre tacos, an original mix with bacon and pineapple, and is still raving about them several days later (I tasted, and also fully approve). Just about the best Mexican food we've had in the county. Late to the party again, we have a terrible tendancy to take too long to try new restaurants that replace some we liked. Don't be like us, run to this one! It comes with a well-stocked bar if you like that (the margaritas looked great) but not the sad bar food that usually goes with it. Likewise, it's on the Embarcadero so could be just another of the tired tourist pigslop establishments that thrive there, but this one would do well anywhere.
