I saw many people just having a drink or a coffee, but I came here for lunch. I decided to get their pork chops with fries. The food came out quickly and it was very good...the pork chop was thin and nicely grilled, the fries were not too crispy but not bad at all. The dish also came with an over easy egg and some nice chorizo pieces and red pimentos. It was a really nice mix of flavors and textures. They take credit cards.

THe plan was to…read moreget a coffee but when I saw those cakes, especially that red velvet one, I just had to try it. Glad I did but wished afterwards that I hadn't. It was a really big piece and tasted like strawberry ice cream. In other words, it was delicious! The place seems to be a bakery at one end and at the other was fruit that seemed to be used to make smoothies. Lots of tables and booths but the place was crowded. There was a really nice feel to the place and with a damn fine cup of coffee and free wifi as well; it's a place worth returning to.

La Gallofa is a chain of bakeries/ pastry shops in Cantabria. From the locations I've been to, all…read morehave a very upscale look to them - this certainly isn't your little hole-in-the-wall panaderia or bakery. When I'm in "beach bum" mode, I typically like to buy a fresh loaf of bread from a bakery, buy some sliced charcuterie or embutidos and a little bit of cheese from a butcher shop, and make my own sandwich to take on the beach for lunch. I came to La Gallofa in search of a small baguette for my sandwich. I was impressed (and also very tempted) by the large selection of freshly baked bread, which included ciabatta, pan gallego, and whole wheat loaves, but managed not to give into temptation. There are also beautifully decorated pastries, as well as some classic hojaldres [1] and palmeritas (some dipped in chocolate!) pastries as well. Judging by the number of people purchasing hojaldres, I'd guess that these are what the bakery does best. If you don't have a sweet tooth (shame on you!), there are also empanadillas and quiche slices available. The bread was perfect for my sandwich with jamon serrano. I loved the light, airy consistency with uneven bubbles and crusty exterior. From location to location, La Gallofa excels in offering baked goods of consistent quality. [1] A popular, flaky pastry.

So your Euro doesn't only buy you a small beer or wine but also a small plate of chorizo, some cheese or fried potatoes. This was a major pleasant surprise for us. We just had great snacks and drinks, but someone said,…read morenow is the time for real food. The local reviews were great, so we wandered in search of La Mulata (it's named after a kind of crab). It is quite far from the main waterfront and it is in an unlikely spot inside a collection of stores. When you enter, you think that you are just in a seafood market as there are chairs and the bounty of Santander is right there for you to see. But then you are escorted to the back and there is this wonderful private spot with white table clothes. We had no idea what to expect as this is a truly local spot, there weren't any English menus as far as the eye could see. Still, we were put in the good hands of the place and she rattled off a host of things and we just nodded and said yes. Boy, are we glad that we did. The prices are incredibly reasonable (like the rest of Santander compared with the tourist prices of say San Sebastian), but the quality is incredible. This place prides itself on great fish and plenty of it. We started with a great appetizer of shrimp and then we had some terrific stew that was so rich and wonderful. The best thing was the whole seabass though. We each had a portion and they were delicious and flavorful. So if you are in Santander and have an appetite this is the perfect place.
