I wish i can live here. Seriously! The staff is amazing, the cats are adorable, and the experience is just phenomenal. The entrance came with a drink which was awesome after our 40 minute walk to get here. The staff know their cats super well and let you know which ones are friendly and which are shy. You have to make a reservation prior to coming so heads up! We loved madrid, there was so much to do, but this was one of the things everyone should do to wind down and relax. Such a sweet haven for rescue cats! 6,00€ per hour, per person and pro-rated by time you spend there. (3€ for 30 min, and so forth). One free drink of your choice from their well-stocked selection of juices, soft drinks, coffees and teas. 2 floors of cat heaven--climbing areas, sleeping areas, eating areas, "cat only" areas to get away from humans--the proprietors of this cat cafe have thought of it all. Walk in and on your right is the customer service / checkout counter where they explain how it works. The left side of the room is a small store area with cat kibble, litter, grooming, toys, etc. supplies. Toward the front left of the room is an enclosed pantry/kitchenette room where the drink fridges, coffee machines, etc are housed. Front right is the hall towards back of the building where the cat rooms are located. There are two rooms on the first floor and one more on the 2nd floor. On the walls downstairs are full-wall-size murals of cats and upstairs an artwork showcase featuring photography, sketches, and paintings by various artists for sale to benefit the care of these shelter cats. There is plenty of seating for friends of felines and felines alike, to lounge and enjoy each other's company. Being these were all shelter/rescue cats most of them had pleasant demeanors though a couple were a bit grouchy (or did not want to be disturbed from their nap time). It was heartening to see the impressive effort embued toward creating these facilities --there was even a 3.5 diameter large running wheel set up for them. I'd been to two cat cafes before this - one in Korea, one in Japan. Those were interesting, but ultimately depressing; the model there, where you buy food to feed the cats to entice them to come to you, results in fat, frantic, overstimulated, overfed felines who gorge themselves and then run away to escape. Here at La Gatoteca, you cannot feed the cats (and in fact are forbidden from doing so). You pay by the hour or part of the hour, and receive a wristband to track your time. Then you go back and just spend time with the cats, IF they choose to spend time with you. Here, the cats rule. If they want to be alone, they go to their roped off area and you are not allowed to follow them. If they are asleep, you are not to disturb them. You sit and let the cats come to you. We wandered around and eventually came upon a little smoke tortie kitten who really wanted to play, and played with her for awhile. There was also a black and white cat who briefly wanted to cuddle. The prices are low enough that you can afford to sit and wait for the cats to get curious about you on their own terms. The best part about this place is it's also an adoption center, so if you like a particular cat you can give it a home. Obviously, I wasn't going to carry a cat home to Los Angeles from Madrid, but I would have thought about the tortie otherwise. read more

I loved this place! I had heard of cat cafes and wanted to visit one - and then, walking along in Madrid one afternoon with 45 minutes to spare - I happened to walk by this place! This is a great place to relax, cuddle some adorable cats, and support a good cause. You pay 4 euros for half an hour, or 6 euros for an hour. The woman working there was so friendly, and gladly told me about the business, and about some of the cats there as well. Basically, the cats are rescued from shelters that have no more room for them (meaning that they would possibly be euthanized), and brought here, to this cat playground. Visitors help support the business, but also have the chance to adopt any of the cats and bring them to a new home. I think that this is a perfect idea! It makes so much sense, and is a great way for anyone looking to adopt a cat to interact with them and find a cat that is right for them. I was a bit worried, when first researching cat cafes, that they would be very commercialized - using the cats as a way to lure in customers, with many in one little space. This is certainly not the case here! The cats have a bigger flat than most people, with two very spacious floors to roam freely in. There are climbing towers, toys, and even little fountains everywhere for them. There are different litter and food areas, and also a place blocked off to the humans that the cats can go if they are just not feeling in the mood for entertaining guests. As soon as I walked in, one cat (the black and white one in the photo) literally ran up to me and laid on my lap purring for almost the entire time. Other cats don't want to be disturbed. Note - this is not a cafe as in, they will serve you pastries and coffee. Included in the price of your visit, you get to pick out one bottled drink and bring it in with you. My husband and I found this cat sanctuary purely by accident,and I am really glad we did. For a reasonable fee you are given your choice of drink, and time with the cats. The place is clean, spacious, and even had a fantastic selection of books. The cats are all rescues, and if one tugs at your heartstrings, you can adopt. They have rules in place to ensure the best environment for the cats, including an off limits area for the cats to escape human interaction. We went during the week, and there wasn't anyone else visiting, though they informed us that weekends got so busy a reservation would be needed. I was given a cat toy, and I spent a joyous hour playing with them. It's a fantastic place with a fantastic cause. read more

Not a typical "café" but that doesn't take away from the beauty of this place. Walk in after you pick your free drink from their cooler and sit in one of many seats surrounded by your favorite animal. Great fun, inexpensive, and just all around amazing. read more

The hour I spent at La Gatoteca was probably one of the best hours of my life. I wanted to adopt all of them, but sadly I couldn't, as I am only a tourist here. The people running the place were very friendly and introduced me to all the cats I saw. They give you a cold drink to bring in with you when you visit the cats and all the kitties were very interested in my sparkling water If I could, I would've spent my whole trip here.
