When I was doing my research for our day/night in Etretat, I discovered La Flotilla and knew it was the kind of restaurant the Mr. and I would enjoy. We arrived shortly after they opened and were offered a table for two near the grill. The space is very charming and we appreciated the excellent service we received. We shared an order of grilled meat and grilled fish, which came with a fresh salad. For sides we had roasted potatoes and the cauliflower dish. Both grilled options were delicious and I couldn't stop eating the cauliflower. For dessert, I got the Lupin which is a crepe served with homemade chocolate, a scoop of vanilla ice cream and homemade whipped cream. The Mr. claimed he was too full for dessert, so didn't order any. When he saw mine, he was very sorry he didn't indulge, because I wasn't really willing to share more than one bite! Haha. While walking around Etretat looking for somewhere to eat dinner, our noses were drawn to the fantastic smell of wood burning cooking. On following our noses, we ended up at la Flottille. This place was busy!! We however got lucky and was seated right away. The serve staff was running around like crazy as it was super busy, however, they still were able to be friendly and provide whatever attention you needed. There prices are reasonable considering the location in the center of the town and by the beach. There restaurant is small with outdoor dining also. There is a huge wood burning fire area where the steaks are grilled. So large he chef sticks his head in to tend the meat. This is the source of the smell that drew us to this restaurant. We all had various galettes. Normande - Very Good. The camembert dominated this galette. Sausage - Good. The sausage was tasty. Could have used less mustard. Chicken - Creamy and good flavour combination. Galette Complete - Ham, cheese , egg. Good also, egg done well. For desert: Pie tart with caramel salted toffee - yummy. Not too sweet. Pear with vanilla ice cream was good, a good balance. Perfetto roll: Yummy - the whipping cream was fluffy and fresh. Very light with good presentation. Everything we ate here was excellent. While planning our day in Étretat, I really wanted fresh seafood since it was a little beach town. We had plans for a different restaurant but ended up changing to La Flotille since the menu had better options for us. In the summer, the area would be packed with tourists, enjoying the sun and sea. We visited in October and there were barely any crowds. But even still, the restaurant filled up really quickly and we only got lucky with seats because we eat earlier than the French. Our waitress was friendly and went through the entire menu in English and gave a lot of recommendations. Mussels: Although very common in Paris, I figured mussels by the ocean would taste even better. And I was right. By far, fresher than the restaurants we ate at in the city. If you come as a group of 3-4, this would be a great dish to share. Salmon Buckwheat Pancake: I've read that buckwheat pancakes taste a little different than regular crepes and, if done properly, crispier. Overall, I just thought it was okay. I prefer sweet crepes over savory and the salmon was a bit too rich. If we weren't sharing it, I don't think I could've finished the whole thing myself. Steak (300g): Not the best looking steak, but the best tasting steak we had in France. Loved the simple seasoning and the grilled taste. Really tender and juicy! I read that the area is also known for their hard ciders so I ordered a some bowl. Yes, it came in a bowl...but not bad! It's different from American hard ciders. American ones taste lighter and sweeter but these ones you can taste the alcohol more. read more

Best Meal in this area of Normandy. The fired grilled meats were just grand. In many of the seaside towns most of the food is just "meh" at best. This place was well run. Kitchen and front of the house had great timing and fluidity. The place was full within 30 minutes of opening with locals and tourists alike. I had the old style sausage with potatoes. Simple and magnificent. After walking the cliffs this meal really hit the spot. The sign on the front door says something to jist of: We chop, sauté, etc etc. homemade sauces. Etc. Very popular restaurant, but does not take reservations. People line up well before they open, and it's worth the wait. Great service and awesome mussels. Only disappointment was the fish, although good, was not grilled as much as my wife prefers. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Excellent traditional Normandy cuisine. Very reasonable (compared to San Francisco and New York!!!) prices. Friendly and attentive service. Make sure to come early as the place fills up quickly even off season. I can only imagine how busy this place is in summer. We dined there twice during our recent stay in Etretat. read more
