From the outside, Chilango has a badass Mexican vibe with a 'dia de los muertos' feel. There is a giant "calaveras" on the sign out front and once you walk in, the decor of photos, trinkets and art make you feel like your in the DF instead of Santiago. The owner lived and studied in Mexico and has brought the flavors and spice to Santiago (adding a bit of Chilean twist to make it palatable for Chilean tastebuds). When we got in it must have been around 12am so we were happy to see it was still open! I was deciding between the quesadilla and the burrito, but because the look and feel were super authentic, I decided to try my luck with the burrito. I am a vegetarian and normally veggie burritos always let me down (except for the Chipotle option). Sure enough, it was a let down and not very filling but, the spicy salsas and nachos did somewhat make up for it. However, my friend, who lived in Mexico for a year, got a burrito with chicken and gave it his seal of approval. This is a perfect place for a late night snack on your way to or from the bars in the area as they are open super late. I also heard they have some good lunch specials, but for me, I am not sure if the quality-price ratio is worth it when there are so many other tasty restaurants around with better veggie options. Tip: Eat in the restaurant (as opposed to getting your order to go) because they have a selection of different and interesting and spicy salsas that you can choose.

Their burritos have a really fresh taste to them and don't leave you feeling super weighed down, which can sometimes happen. They offer several different burritos, taco and always have freshly made guacamole. So the food great. The location is also great it's right on loreto by lots of the major bars and Santiago night scene, they also have street seating for the scorching summers. I always stop by here after a night at Onacio. So what sucks their SERVICE. it doesn't just suck it's atrocious. I don't think I've ever received worst service in my life. It can with fresh guacamole and a cheese sauce. We also got bean tacos, extra tortillas and beans. The only thing we were missing was chips and salsa. The table behind us ordered nachos, which looked amazing and next time we will be sure to give them a try. I can also highly recommend the lemonade. I am sure we will be back. I saw some folks eating with a fork and knife, smh. They had the basics down - tortillas blanditas, your choice of meat, topped with onion and cilantro and a lemon wedge on the side. Simple yet tasty and satisfying. A bit on the salty side, but this is Chile. The horchata was good too, and they sell Pulparindo! Are they the best or the most authentic? They'll do the trick if you have a craving for tacos/Mexican food. They have specials on the walls that I wish I had seen before because I would have crushed some tacos de lengua and arrachera. I've only been to Los Miserables twice, but it certainly satisfies my craving like no other taco I've had yet in Santiago. Now, I'm not saying this place could compete head-to-head with my favorite taquerias in Dallas or Austin, but for an expat with a powerful taco jones it's the closest I've found here to the real thing. Those of us with first-hand taco knowledge, directly from either the mothership Mexico or her satellites in Texas and New Mexico (sorry, Baja CA, those Californified tacos are delicious but they're not 100% authentic), must be generous when assessing tacos so far from their home turf, but Los Miserables certainly delivers. The soft corn tortillas are larger, thicker and doughier than I'm used to, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I've had my share of dry, over-limed and just wrong corn tortillas in Chile, so I ain't complaining. After you order at the window of this tiny but sparkling-clean joint at the corner of Pio Nono and Bellavista, your tortillas are thrown on the griddle to await your choice of fillings -- all the better to melt the gooey cheese that you must add because it has ACTUAL CHEESY FLAVOR. (Expats will know what I mean.) Watch as the cocinero piles on the rich, piquant fillings and then passes your order to be garnished -- go all the way: onions, crema, guac and cilantro (mas, por favor). I've tried the chicken tinga, pastor, carnitas and egg/potato/cheese, and all were flavorful and freshly prepared. On my last visit I finally discovered the 500-peso side of grilled onions and actual FRESH, not pickled, jalapenos (again, expats will know what I mean). The server charmingly warned me it would be picante -- how cute. It added just the zing of taco-ness I'd been seeking and made me a little less homesick. However, I attended an event recently that was catered by Zócalo and the food and flavors were surprisingly delicious (read: spicy). I knew I needed to find the brick-and-mortar restaurant soon. Note for Americans: Don't come here expecting TexMex. There are no starter chips and salsa, fajitas, or queso dip. There is crema, spicy salsas, black beans, and soft and fluffy corn tortillas. We arrived midday on a Sunday and were happy to see that Zócalo, unlike other nearby restaurants, was actually open. Our server was great and brought us multiple pitchers of margaritas, and we shared the parrallada and some chips with guac and black beans. All told, it was less than $60k clp for all four of us. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday! The only downside was that as the restaurant saw more customers, or server was noticeably less attentive and forgetful. We did not get our waters as ordered or to-go salsa. Nonetheless, it was an excellent experience and we'll definitely be back. If you like Mexican cuisine and decor, give Zócalo a chance. Drinks: They have a nice variety of drinks with prices that aren't too offensive. Atmosphere: It's a gringo bar. The place is pretty huge - there are several rooms on different floors. This makes it a great place for events. I've been to several events from different groups - from language exchanges, English storytelling, to US presidential debate parties. They also seem to have themed dance parties and events that you can find on Facebook. The ambiance is California sports bar with surfaces that are a bit sticky. Service: Typical Chilean service (slow) but I have been there before when the service was actually really good. They get really busy and are understaffed but you can tell the staff is usually doing their best given the circumstances. Overall I think as long as you know what to expect you shouldn't be disappointed with this place, and I would recommend it to any English speaking foreigners in Santiago.
