Well, the location is delightful, hidden up a side street in a sleepy village behind a walled courtyard. There are tables inside and outside. Our preference would be to eat outside (providing weather permits) but it does not really matter as your meal will be delightful wherever you are sat. The restaurant is owned by David and Bridget Pugh. Both are front of house but Bridget focuses on the food and David the wine. The food is either ordered a la carte or from "Le Menu Capricieux" which is essentially a tasting menu that is explained to you at the table. We have always chosen the tasting menu as, once it was explained, it sounded too good to ignore and represents excellent value at €58 per person for four courses followed by cheese and desert. Each course is prepared relatively simply with most dishes displaying classical French style with a twist. For example, when we last visited Scallops in an Asian flavoured consommé was on the menu along with rabbit stuffed with sage and pistachio. The cheese is all home matured and consequently is in excellent condition with a good mixture of options from the region and the rest of France. By the time you get to desert, you would be forgiven for thinking that you had no space left. However, when a chariot of desert options appears next to your table it is impossible to resist and proves a delightful end to the meal. As I have mentioned, David is in charge of the wine. The list is a reason to visit in itself with all of the regions great names available in multiple vintages across the last 20 years or so. You will not find a better place to explore the region's wine. David is an expert guide and can not only provide recommendations to pair with your meal but talk about the manner in which each wine is made and what makes it unique. We have always placed our faith in David and ordered a wine pairing to match our tasting menu (€28 per person). We were not been disappointed by any of the wines he chose. To the contrary, the pairings exceeded our expectations in quality and as a result of David's excellent introduction to each glass of wine, we have learned a lot about the region's growers through his pairings. Service was excellent, and we were able to make a reservation for a table outside in the little square at street level, which is just accross from a city playground area. That was very convenient as the kids could go play safely just a few yards away from our table between dishes. The food was very good and the kids' menu consisted of smaller portions of the regular menu - I really appreciate it when restaurants don't just assume that all kids will eat is pasta, burgers and fries. The waiter also provided good advice on wine/food pairing. An excellent experience altogether.

A quick update from my holiday visits here this year. Overall, I was less enthused about this…read morerestaurant. First, I felt that the cooking has moved a step backwards. Our main course of beef was not seasoned and the beef was tough. Second, the dinner menu is now a brief a la carte and consequently does not represent the same value for money as in previous years. This said, the wine list remains excellent in terms of both value and breadth. I find it almost impossible to decide what to pick. I just wish that the food was a little better than currently on offer.

My spouse had the crepe with bacon and ham and a white sauce, also tre' manufique! My brother and aunt both loved the lamb kebabs. I also had a small salad, very simple but the dressing was so interesting, it was strongly peppery but didn't appear to have many pepper flecks; how do they do it?! There are both a la carte and set menus to choose from (the later being very good value for a weekday lunch). The best feature is that much of the food is prepared on an indoor BBQ grill which lent a lovely smokey aroma to the lamb we ordered. As the kitchen inside is open, it would also make for a engaging culinary experience if you came here on a cooler day. The wine list is currently relatively brief (though I understand that there are plans to expand its scope) with a focus on the terroir within which Le Pressoir resides. A flat markup of €9 on cellar door prices means that everything is good value and the grand vins are something of a bargain. A very promising beginning and I look forward to seeing how it has developed in 2013 and beyond.
