Strasbourgeois sauerkraut
Conrad B.

Visited 05/11/2025 Initially, we'd made plans for Le Train Bleu, but apparently there was a strike and LTB was closed until the end of the month. Our hotel concierge recommended La Couple (The Dome) and while not the ambiance of LTB, we did have an enjoyable meal and evening. I thought the Art Deco decor was very cool. Between the 6 of us, I believe 4 had the roasted sea bass fillet (with champagne sauce, creamy risotto, parmesan) which everyone seemed to enjoy. My BIL had the Strasbourgeois sauerkraut, (pork loin, smoked pork belly, white sausage, cumin sausage, knackwurst.) This is a BIG plate of food, which was pretty much gone at the end of the evening. I had the grilled skate. I'd never had this fish before but always wanted to try. They did a masterful job. I will be getting 'skate' again if I see it elsewhere on another menu. Service was prompt and attentive...

3.5 stars. Art deco-designed La Coupole opened during the Roaring 20s & later was a gathering place for artists & writers. After dinner here, we took a peek into the dance hall downstairs & imagined the glitz & glam of its heyday. We ordered: -- Grand Cru (39,50 €): platter of a dozen oysters, three of each kind. We never found out which oysters were which, as they weren't labeled, nor did our waiter give an explanation. I don't eat oysters but my companions said they're much larger than the varieties in the US. -- Creamy Burrata (14,50 €): quite wilted & unspectacular. -- Onion Soup (10,50 €): we'd had this at a couple other restaurants & this one was mild & forgettable. -- Roasted Sea Bass Fillet (29,50 €): the most outstanding dish of the evening. Delicate basil white butter sauce. Firm but tasty fish. -- Bourbon Vanilla Crème Brûlée (8,50 €): standard, but even an ordinary crème brûlée in Paris is good. -- Red Fruits Pavlova (12,50 €): I'm a huge fan of the berries & meringue combination. A light ending to a hearty meal. I like the energy in this storied Montparnasse eatery; I'd come back for dessert, but there was nothing exceptional about the savory parts of dinner.

It must have been twenty-five years since we were last at La Coupole in Paris. But at the last minute during a recent visit to France, a cousin suggested meeting there as we were coming back to the nearby Montparnasse train station. Service was efficient and brisk, despite it being packed on a Thursday night. We three ordered entrees. Mine was the signature and rather famous "1927 Lamb Curry". Yes, one may ask the connection, but a century ago, this exotic dish and its presentation was the rage. And it was delicious! My wife had the Magret de Canard with polenta, while our cousin decided upon Tartare de Boeuf. The entrees were accompanied by a really nice organic Cotes du Rhone, Domaine Verquiere. The selections were excellent. We decided upon Profiteroles for desert. The restaurant is not overpriced given the quality and ambiance. For over a century La Coupole has stood as a cavernous but landmark Parisian brasserie and dance hall. While its initial fame came in the roaring 1920's, the restaurant has remained popular with Parisians for both celebrations and late night dinners. The establishment remains a temple to Art Deco architecture and so for us that's an added attraction. But before you leave... Walk around and look; despite the din and bustle you see painted columns and art near the American Bar all of which are a throwback to the interwar era when the literary community and expatriates frequented this place. Notables ranging from Pablo Picasso, Simone de Beauvoir and Edith Piaf to Americans such as Ernest Hemingway, Henry Miller and Ava Gardner were regulars. Their spirits are part of the charm too. After this wonderful reacquaintance, it's the beginning of a beautiful friendship!

AMAZING! From start to finish, it was so good! Had the french onion, creme brûlée, and the main course I had, chicken, was amazing. Everyone at the table enjoyed what they had! The service was good too.

Deliciously fresh and simple presentation of superb seafood. La Coupole still has the integrity of first rate food after all these years. The dining room has the warm vibe of happy people enjoying the evening. Little fuss, lots of old pros at work.

Awesome ambience and excellent service. Reasonably priced for the atmosphere and food. French Onion Soup was superb. Also Foie Gras was perfect. Recommend Tigre Bock IPA!

Is it common to encounter racism in Paris? La Coupole is one example. If you are Asian, I strongly recommend avoiding this restaurant due to their discriminatory treatment. I made a reservation for 10:00 PM last Sunday, excited to try French cuisine. We arrived at 9:30 PM but were completely ignored while other guests were seated. I thought it might be because we arrived early, so we waited until 10:00 PM, yet still received no attention. After waiting until 10:20 PM, one of the servers finally approached but prioritized taking orders from two ladies behind us. I stood up to seek help, and she eventually noticed when I went straight to the reception. She seated my husband and me, along with the other two ladies, at a table in the middle, but the servers continued to ignore us while serving the tables beside us. When I inquired about this, they claimed they were too busy. After I complained to the manager, they offered us a table, but who wants to eat there after being treated like that? Why were they too busy for us but not for others? The service we received was unacceptable and felt distinctly discriminatory. It was clear they didn't care about us as Asian customers. If you want to enjoy your time in Paris, I suggest staying away from this restaurant to avoid a negative experience.

Seabass tartare

A famous seafood French restaurant that is almost 100 years old. They are known for their seafood tower which I think anything raw, this restaurant does well. However, I thought their hot options were kind of weak. Thus, would recommend sticking to ordering their raw options like the seafood towers, tartare, or other things. It's crowded and busy- worth going to but I'm not sure if the food is as worth the hype. I was a little disappointed that when we found a staple in our crab leg the facility kind of waived it off and didn't do much to compensate for the find, but no harm done. We ordered the Royal tower (about 86 pounds). This was worth ordering. Presents well and each sea food was clean, sweet, and fresh. Some of the freshest seafood you can find around. It had sweet oysters, giant prawn, small cockles, clams, crabs, lobsters, and tiny shrimp that no one really knew how to eat but we somehow did. We found a staple in a lobster/crab part. Was not too thrilled that after addressing this with the waiter they kind of just waived it off. this could have been potentially fatal had someone swallowed this. The sea bass tartare was worth getting- a fresh and clean dish. We had some hot dishes too and this is where it kind of fell apart. Whole lobster ravioli- there was like no ravioli. A half lobster tail thrown on top of overcooked flat pasta sheets with maybe a hint of some kind of stuffing. this dish just looked like it was made as an after thought or rather forgotten on the hot top and then it became mushy. Ordered a dish of hot veggies just to get some greens in- it was a forgettable dish. to where I can't find it on the menu and don't remember what it was. The place is very busy- we had to wave down our waiter multiple times. If you left halfway without paying or left when seated but then couldn't get their attending to start with water, they probably wouldn't even realize it. You pay online which no one made clear to us except for the little placards on your table hidden behind your plates saying this so we wasted half an hour waiting to flag waiter down/ask how to pay. Overall, an ok place. Had high hopes but this was considered average to me. Wouldn't make this a top priority to go in the future.

Two types of glacé

Delightful art deco atmosphere with delicious food and friendly service. We sat outside on a beautiful evening, and enjoyed the French onion soup as a starter. I have never had French onion soup with such flavor in the broth. The salmon steak with saffron butter sauce and peas was a new combination of flavors for me, and one I recommend. The glacé dates to the 1600s so we couldn't possibly say no!

Cool Art Deco Brasserie!

I go to La Coupole for the atmosphere, always busy, the cool Art Deco décor and the fresh sea food. As often in Paris' Brasseries, it can be a little difficult to get a waiter's attention, they are running around taking care of many tables, so you just have to be patient. I am from la Bretagne and picky about seafood (to be honest about anything that goes in my plate), and La Coupole doesn't disappoint. I also like the fact that you can order exactly what you want, you don't have to pick one of their selected seafood platter. Since I was having dinner by myself, a half crab was perfect, a few oysters, bulots, shrimps, everything was extremely fresh and came with delicious bread and a generous amount of good quality salted butter. There is also a bar, but really you want to soak up the atmosphere at a table and take your time!

Luckily we arrived there before 12pm. Is better if you make a reservation because it's always packed. The food, dessert, and drinks were really good 8.5/10. Favorite plate: French onion soup and fish.

Dinner at the famous La Coupole! La Coupole, founded in 1927, is one of Paris' most famous brasseries known for its artistic history A scene from Emily in Paris was also shot here! I absolutely loved the French onion soup here - probably the best I've ever had! For mains, although they have many meat options, their seafood options are the way to go. The sole fish was sooo smooth and fresh, a must try. The seafood sauerkraut was good as well, I like how they give you a bit of everything and an entire mountain of sauerkraut French Onion Soup (9€) Bone Marrow (13.5€) Escargots (19€) Sole a la Plancha (46€) Seafood Sauerkraut (27.5€) Irish Cut Beef Steak (33€) La Coupole's Sauerkraut (27.5€)
