Well, the 80 degree weather yesterday was a lovely treat.. but of course, it was back down to 50 and cloudy today. GET IT TOGETHER, DC WEATHER. Anyway, after filling up on some hot ramen up the road at Daikaya, we ventured down to La Colombe for an afternoon pick-me-up. The menu is small, yet concise. The bakery case is also small, yet concise. I like it. The latte was rich and frothy, and topped with some lovely latte art. The macchiato was bold and literally the direct translation of a traditional macchiato (No Starbucks macchiato for you!). The bakery treats caught my eye (of course) and I HAD to get the bourbon caramel coffee cake. Totally should have bought two... Next time! read more

La Colombe is wonderful when you know what to expect - don't expect wifi!!! Surprised me the first time, but nothing wrong with it - just don't plan to come work online here. Perfect spot for reading, studying, or you can always hotspot if you have it! That out of the way, the coffee is delicious. I get the oat milk latte and love it. Its on draft, which is definitely not the usual place to find a latte, but its really really good! And at 4.25 its pretty on par with other coffee shops in the area (if anything its a *little* more expensive considering size). Big open space, lots of seating, and good coffee. UPDATE: The coffee scene is now in Washington, DC and La Colombe may take the cake (or scone) for best coffee shop in DC. This is Todd Carmichael's second DC location and it's on point. Here's why: 1) Location- It's on 6th & I Street NW in between two hot neighborhoods (Mt. Vernon Square and Chinatown). It's Metro accessible and literally next to the synagogue making a coffee run before that concert easy (If you get here before 7PM). 2) Atmosphere- They perfected the stage DC is in with how they designed the place. It's a modern take on the old with its brick walls and exposed pipes along the ceiling. 3) Seating- Compared to La Colombe's original Blagden Alley location, there's more seating here with small tables to both your right and left including a long table to one side and another long table in a raised nook. 4) Coffee + Food- The coffee is always on point and this place gave me my first experience of NOT putting additional sugar in my iced latte. They gave me a draft latte and it's perfectly foamy and doesn't need sugar. It's not sweet but it's so quality and smooth it doesn't need anything else. The food offerings include quality pastries of all kind and a section of grab and go offerings. 5) The staff- Confident, knowledgeable about the art of coffee without being snobs, and friendly. Drew the manager is the best! Please go here ASAP. It will be the hottest coffee shop in town soon enough. FYI: If you're looking for wifi, go to Chinatown Coffee, Starbucks or Busboys and Poets nearby. Like all La Colombes, there's no wifi. I see it as them encouraging us to forgo the distraction of technology and to enjoy the best coffee with a great book. 1. Where's the WiFi?! I'm coming from out of town, but when I come to DC again, I won't come here. That may seem high maintenance, but the majority of people are coming to use a coffee shop for those purposes. For work or personal use. That's my biggest hiccup with this place right now. 2. And I'm not a coffee snob, but they couldn't offer a chai tea latte or a vanilla latte. I would have walked out, but I'll just have this drink now. 3. My last complaint! (Sorry, I'm normally not rude on these.) I see one outlet! It's because I'm using it. Is it because the building is older and restored? I like the look and see how it is appealing. I'm not a huge coffee or tea drinker, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt. This is my friend's favorite coffee place, so we agreed to meet here. It's a very cute little brick building from the outside. It's quaint and homey looking and sort of sticks out in this area of DC. The inside is more modern, with a moderate amount of seating, and warm, earthy design tones. I had the ruby oolong tea. It didn't wow me, but it was okay. It was served at a nice temperature, and I really appreciated the fact that they had simple syrup available to make it a touch sweeter. The service seemed a little strained, perhaps disinterested, but they were fine overall. It was a little expensive, and the chairs weren't super comfortable, so I'm not sure I could settle down here and hang out for a long while. However, it served our purposes, and my friend highly recommends the coffee here. read more

I love La Colombe. The first one I went to was the one in Rittenhouse square in Philly. I was so excited once they started opening locations in other cities. Whenever I'm in DC, Chicago, Boston or LA, I always make a point to visit their cafes. They have cold brew and lattes on draft and can make a Black and Tan with half of each. My favorite drink to get is what they playfully call the tan line, which is 3/4 cold brew and 1/4 draft latte, which is my preferred ratio. They also recently started serving a coffee berry iced tea called the Cascara. It's tasty and has a bit of a figgy flavor. They also always have glasses with sparkling or still water taps, which I think is a great touch. They also sell pastries from local bakeries wherever they are set up. This location is right across from the Sixth and I venue. I used to come to book events here all the time when I lived in the city. Couldn't love La Colombe more. read more

I've been here a couple times for the draft lattes which have always been OK. Nothing special about them, just a new and different way to have coffee. This time I decided to switch it up for a hot chocolate and I really wish I hadn't. It tasted like they had made it with water instead of milk, almost like there as no creamy taste to it. I'm obsessed with La Colombe's draft lattes and have been since trying it for the first time last year (in the can form). It's definitely different from other lattes, but the silky smooth texture of the nitro-infused latte is so nice after getting used to it. This location is pretty close to the Capital One Arena; it's in Chinatown and it's a pretty decent size to sit down and have a latte or even study for a bit. The draft latte is $4 for a pretty good-sized latte (like a grande by Starbucks standards) and poured from the tap right on site. They also sell the draft latte cans and different coffee beans. Great coffee served here! I always try to make a stop by if I'm in the area. read more

I just happened to be in the area for work and needed a quick cup of tea, and saw this coffee place as an option. It's a pretty cozy place, and the service was pretty good. However, I do think their teas are a little overpriced. They don't really fill the tea up a lot in the cup either. I got the ruby oolong tea, because I was informed that it was the fruiter one among all of the teas they had. I paid $4.50 before tax for almost 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup of tea. I pay less for a Starbucks tea drink and get more out of it, and it tastes better in my opinion. All in all, I do not foresee myself coming back here again. read more

However, since being diagnosed with a heart condition I have switched to decaf for the past few years. I have never come across a place that charges MORE for DECAF until La Colombe. The cold brew is smooth but didn't have a lot of complex flavors so I'd recommend getting the draft latte even if you are a big black coffee drinker because it's good but the flavors don't really dance in your mouth like a great cold brew can. The atmosphere is great- it seems like an awesome place to study or get work done because 75% of the cafe was doing just that! I love the gender neutral restrooms and free water stations!!! The coffee is great. And yet I still may never go back because the customer service is awful. My friends and I stopped in for a coffee during the afternoon rush. After waiting for the cashier to actually get to the cash register, we proceeded to put in our orders of tea, drip coffee, and lattes. She basically looked pissed off and told me that they could only do drip coffee and tea right now because they were too backed up to do anymore espresso drinks, and then gestured at the line of lattes waiting for the barista to take care of. She then told me to wait until the line was shorter and come back in place my latte order then. I was like, "you want me to get out of the line and wait to put in my order for an espresso drink? What happens if the line doesn't get shorter?" Not surprisingly, she didn't have an answer for that. Why? Because the whole thing makes no sense! So I asked "can I pay for them all now and then tell you my order later?". I mean, I figured the line wasn't going to get any shorter and so I might as will just pay for them and then tell her once there's time. Actually the whole thing makes no sense because if so I didn't get any shorter how would I ever get my latte? Luckily, in the time it took to ask her about paying for all of these drinks, the line magically got short enough that she deigned to put in our orders. But they don't put names on the cups or lids, so you have to stand around and hope that you can figure out who was in front of you in line for coffee. This led to a lot of confusion about whether they were your lattes or my lattes or someone else's lattes. It was crowd management at its least useful. When we finally all had drinks, I honestly felt like I had finished a particularly stressful day at work. ***They get 2 stars vs 1 because when I noted on Square that I had a poor experience, the management response was prompt, refunding my money and letting me know that the counter people would be spoken to. It was cute, i liked the aesthetic of the store. The seating was VERY limited (due to COVID), and there was no wifi. Apparently it's a company-wide thing intended to facilitate connection and present-ness. That's fine with me, except that I went to do specifically online work. Since it wasn't advertised anywhere in the store or on the website, I didn't know until I after I ordered and sat down. Other than that, the coffee was just okay (maybe just not for me) but the prices were reasonable for D.C. The employees weren't particularly friendly either. Yooooooo. I was told to go here by a friend and it did not disappoint. I'm sure the coffee is delicious but what you NEED to order is the Black and Tan. It's a 50/50 mix of cold press and a latte. It is glorrrious!!!! Like the best drink you'll have if you like both cold press and lattes. For all my dairy intolerant folks they even have an oat milk latte option! This drink is soooo smooth. Cold press is great because you don't have the bitter taste that can come with pulling espresso too long. The latte on portion is on tap and falls into the cold press below. The smoothness and creaminess of this coffee reminds me of a nitro press stout. It's real real good. I highly recommend you go here and order the Black and Tan! read more

I went in hoping for a nitro, and quite sadly they had none ready for us. As a chronic nitro-drinker and ex-barista, I know this is a common occurrence but I was pretty underwhelmed by the iced coffee I had instead. The few tables adjacent to us all ordered draft lattes and everyone seemed to be raving about it. If I find myself back here, I'm certainly intrigued. Overall, the positive part was the really cute water dispenser they had in the cafe that offered still and sparkling water, as well as the gender-neutral restrooms. The exposed brick and industrial-chic decor was pretty neat and cozy enough, and there were cool nooks and crannies throughout the store, and even a window-side loft to hang out at. A solid coffee shop right in the heart of the city, and they set themselves apart with some unique options. First though, I'm a simple minded guy. I like straight up espresso over ice. The version here is rich and tasty, very good, though not quite Compass or Bakers & Baristas quality. Worth checking out. If you want the specials, they have draft lattes here, and it is amazing. I don't normally go with a latte - too much milk - but this is delicious. It's like nothing you've ever tasted. So thick and creamy. Draft iced coffee is very good, too. They also have some nice pastry options you won't find elsehwere. My favorite is the monkey bread, which is incredibly fresh. It is soft and cinnamony like the best coffee cake you've ever tried. I inhaled this bad boy in mere seconds. I wish they had a larger array of fresh pastries - again like Bakers & Baristas does - but hey still good. It is a very nice space with tons of windows letting in copious amounts of sunlight, maybe 15 tables, and a cool loft with a table, but good luck finding it open. It is a very nice place to hang out but a little sparse on the outlets, and NO WIFI. Boo. Bonus points for having bottles of fresh ice coffee. Incredible. Roasty and flavorful. Nice touch. Ultimately, solid spot, but more hospitable options are close by. read more

I hate chains but La Colombe looks and feels like a small local coffee shop and feels authentic. They also make great coffee and espresso drinks.
