Standing down in the arena looking up at the stone tiers is magnificent, you can really feel the history here. Be ready for a good leg workout, though, because there is quite a bit of climbing up and down the uneven ancient steps (definitely wear comfortable walking shoes).
The effort is 100% worth it once you get to the top. The panoramic view overlooking the entire city of Lyon and the rivers below is fantastic. There's also the Lugdunum museum right on site if you want to dig deeper into the Roman artifacts and history.
Tip: Once you're done exploring the theater, it's just an easy, short walk straight over to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière to see the church and catch even more incredible views from the overlook.
