It doesn't look like much, it's more of a speakeasy style restaurant. What really puzzles me is how a place that specializes in cooking meats, is better at cooking vegetables than chicken... the chicken was over cooked and dry, the teriyaki sauce saved it. Quick take: ambiance is old school, food this visit just old. If you go to eat, go early and don't order Halibut. This is a tough review to write since my past experiences were good, but I'd not been there for dinner in a couple years. Service was decent and the ambiance still worth a visit (for drinks), but I can only assume showing up at 8:10 on a weekday means old, rubbery bread, inedible Halibut (dry, tasted like grill), dried out/over cooked 2x baked potatoes... The petit filet was cooked properly but tasted like... Grill. And fish. Hunger drove decision to ask for A1 to "fix" the steak. Complaints on fish must be common since about 5 seconds into replying to "how is everything", the server offered to take it off the bill. Anyhow, the $10 petit filet was $40. With the included two mediocre salads ans TV dinner caliber potatoes left mostly uneaten, plus one beer,c one glass of wine, tax and tip = $77. read more

I was a frequent customer (pre-covid). ILa Cave is my favorite steakhouse. The steak is just perfect! It was absolutely Delicious, cooked perfectly and good qualilty. The cheesebread is to dye for, best i've ever had. The service was always profesional and friendly. Prices are reasonable especially for the quality of the food. Great ambmiance and very clean. I am looking forward to La Cave opening back up. It's the first restaurant I'd like to visit once permitted. In the meantime, best of luck to La Cave and Staff & I hope you find yourself safe. I saw a few bad reviews based on the fact that they had to temporarily closed and the miss on the reservations situation, which I found were a bit unfair. Suggest to consider the local guidelines when making reservations to a dine in steak house. The closures haven't been easy to navigate. We had reservations on Halloween, hadn't been here in years. Martinis started the evening with smiles and giggles, the salad that started the dining portion of our evening followed next and although there is comfort in Familiarity, the salad is definitely not an evening highlight. However, advancing into our main course left us wanting for nothing. The baked potato had a velvety interior, and I just love a great vessel to enjoy some butter! As for the steak and lobster? I believe this meal may have just been my best meal of 2020! The steak was thick, juicy, an interior tender cut, seasoned appropriately to maximize flavor, and no second guessing or prior peak to deliver medium rare to perfection. Since we were celebrating we added the lobster tail. What a FANTASTIC DECISION! Sweet, tender, succulent, moist, and perfectly perched atop the filet tempting us to enjoy this crustacean before all else. We also had a side of asparagus, another winner. I almost felt generous enough to give La Cave 3 stars until I started thinking about our horrendous experience and decided 2 stars is generous enough. This is an old school steak house. And I'm sure that at one time, it might've been good. But that time has gone. We came here for my sisters birthday and had a pretty early reservation because we had plans to see a show after. We arrive and there are 2 tables occupied in the main dining room and it was vacant in the back dining room. The older woman who played hostess sat us in the back in a completely empty room that looked like a sad, dark banquet hall. I asked if we were being put in a time-out because that's how we felt. She said because we had 6 people, she wanted to save the main dining area for smaller parties. And also the table had five chairs on one side and one chair on the other side so one person was sitting by them-self. We asked about this and she said it was because there was a large reservation at the table next to us and we needed to make space for them. When we asked what time that reservation was coming, she said two hours AFTER our reservation. Totally comical how ridiculous her reasoning was. After we again (the third time) asked to be moved, she finally let us move to a booth (still in the back room) and after emphasizing that there was a reservation for that table so we couldn't linger. If the food is good, I can forgive bad service. But yikes that isn't the case either. They have an awesome presentation of bringing the cuts of meat on a tray so you can pick what you want and it looks good! No, not good. Everything was terrible. The meat was not good quality. It was tough and grisly. My lobster tail was very small, overcooked, and rubbery. And to add insult to injury, they're liquor selection is outdated and really small. There is no decent bourbon to be found at the bar. And this horrible experience cost us $230 per person! I'm never going back. This is an update from one of my earliest reviews, and a place that I am still going back to over a decade later. No, it isn't a mainstay restaurant, but I get here from time to time and have had several large group outings here. Our office parties suck, so I collect a select group of coworkers and we have a "Better than the Office Christmas Party Christmas Party," usually several weeks before or after the actual holiday rush. There is an early-bird special deal that is killer, and it is all one price, so I make sure we get in for that (they suspend it right around the holiday). Everyone has a great time, the staff treats us well, the steaks are always tasty and properly cooked, and with the salad, potato and yummy cheesy bread, we all get pretty stuffed by the end of the night. read more

- Locale Destination - It's on Irvine Ave and E 17th St in Costa Mesa. It's in the big shopping plaza, at the corner, right by "my fit food". It's in a big building, has a sign for "La Cave". Once you see the sign, get into the building and take an elevator or stairs to go downstairs. Take the dingy little stairs with old fashion drawing. Setting: Classy steak house one. Classy couches, old school table setting, bar etc. Lots of seating but tight setting. Everything is ancient. They have TVs at the bar for games, which is cool to me. The tiny kitchen is right by the elevator. The bathroom was clean but it's super small. Ambiance: Very outdated, a total old school "steakhouse" setting, classy, dingy... Great for date (old school - don't expect the swanky ambiance here). The ambiance must be the ONLY reason for the low star rating. Service: Great. The staff must have worked here for a long while. Very classy, pleasant, and attentive. Drinks: Classy but they got good bartenders. I drink booze sometimes, but am not a fan of too much alcohol. Most bartenders in US can make only standard cocktails and make way too strong ones. Even if I asked "very little booze", they tend to make it "too strong". They make quite great drinks and my request was perfectly executed. I did enjoy my cocktail - it hasn't happened for quite a long long long long time.. Menu: Steak house. They have a little drink menu, but don't have a menu for food. The server will explain to you all. The price is nowhere. Have a big wallet to be safe. I guess it comes appetizer (soup or salad), one side and one entree. Maybe cheese breads?! The price was very reasonable for the quality and portion. 4 whiskeys, 1 cocktail, 1 appetizer, 2 baskets of cheese bread, 2 steak, 1 asparagus ended up around $160 without tips. - Gluttony Expedition - French martini: very sweet, sissy and good. The bartenders know what they do. My request for a little booze was happily well executed. Cheese bread: Tons of cheese on the toast. Crispy and so good. Dip it into the sauce for appetizer mushroom. So good! Mushroom: Tons of garlic swimming in the oil. Simple but good. Mmmm good with the cheese bread. Steak: Pick whatever - The server will bring the protein cart in front of you. It has both meats and seafood. You can double the meat or make it surf and turf - whatever you want. All of them looked pretty good. they can cook very well and the meat quality is pretty good. It's x100 better than"Mastro's" food wise. 1) Rib eye - It was huge and I could eat only the half. The meat was very tender, juicy, and cooked very well. No sauce - I wish they had some though it was very tasty with just salt & pepper. Well done. 2) NY - Awesome. Twice potato: They seasoned mush potato and put it back into the potato skin. Seasoned well, a little dry, but not bad. (see pic) Asparagus: Nothing special. They could have been better. Need a little seasoning. - Conqueror's Deduction - 4.5 stars on steaks and cheese breads. I wish they had better sauces on steaks, though steaks tasted really good by themselves. They just offer simple salt and pepper. The salad and soup could be updated. But overall, it's really not bad. I came here long long long long long time ago (probably over 10 years) for the club night when I was a student. But I've never come here for the steak. I'm not a fan of steak house generally because most places don't cook steak well and make me disappointed thinking I could have gotten a better meat from the butcher for less $$$. This place is very old school and has a very outdated ambiance, but they cook steak very well and food are better than most steak houses. Don't be fooled by the low rating. My sweetie and I were joined by close friends for a Valentine's Day dinner here last night. What a bizarre little place! Located in a run down strip mall, in the basement, under a Blockbuster, it is not what you would expect for a fine steakhouse. After making our way down the 1960's era elevator, the door opened to the chef's station, right in front of us. Blam!, check out those steaks! The room is small and dark with low ceilings, like a secret speak-easy out of the 30's. The cottage cheese ceilings, big booths, aged paneling, red carpet and old ceiling light fixtures all reeked of kitschy charm. At 7pm on a Saturday, it was mostly couples from 30-60 years old. We were nicely dressed but not too nice. We were warned the dress would be all over the board. The place is very loud, so don't expect a quiet conversation. The service was quite good and the food was fabulous. Their signature garlic toast and big dinner salads made appetizers unnecessary. Both were tasty. Lots of crispy cheese on white toast. The menu cart was appreciated as you could really get an idea of portion sizes and quality. We knew it would be pricey so it was no big deal ordering blind of costs. Prime rib, side of crab legs for me. Wifey had the 8oz. fillet. The other couple had a similar steak and the medallions of beef with a lobster tail side. We split some asparagus and the marinated mushrooms and we all had the twice baked potato. Everything was stellar. All top quality and very tasty. Good sized portions, not overly salty. I can bathe in twice baked potatoes. They were amazing. The steaks and prime rib were perfectly cooked to our liking. The seafood was tender and full of flavor. Asparagus was crispy, not mushy, and the mushrooms were succulent. Wonderful. The cocktails and wine flowed, as did the conversation. The people watching was hilarious. As we sat and dined, the place slowly transformed into a nightclub. The band came in to set up at about 10:15 and the patrons morphed from older couples to 20-somethings, the hair turned from grey to beanie covered mops. We were soon out of our element. The tables around us literally were disappearing and we knew it was time to go home to our kids. We got out at around $100 per head. Coupons are all over the local papers if you want a cheaper mid-week option. We absolutely loved the funkiness of the building and crowd. Service is excellent. Maybe it was the time of night, we came early on a Saturday- but everyone was really attentive. Started with their famous cheese bread - I loved it, hubby wasn't impressed. Interesting how you don't get a menu - so knowing prices of items is difficult. I originally ordered rib eye , it was so chewing I couldn't eat it. I rarely send things back, as I am afraid of what else I may get! But I am glad I did because NY strip was excellent!! Tasty cooked perfect. Twice baked potato was very good. (Salad reminded me of my grandmothers favorite place) prime rib hubby had was little over cooked, and just average in taste. The music was all 60's which I didn't mind - hubby loves it (better then the techno we were forced to listen to Last weekend) Overall I would probably give it another shot. read more

Prefacing this review stating that I live in Texas, so I can only compare it to restaurants there...and there's a lot of steakhouses back home to compare to! My favorite part about La Cave, is the ambiance. Love the little rickety elevator down to the dark speakeasy style restaurant. It gets points for cool factor. I'd bring a date here. Pricing wasn't outrageous either, for what was served. Like the other reviews state, they don't offer a menu but instead wheel a cart over with meat on ice, showing you the cuts available that night. Filet, ribeye, strip, crab legs, lobster, swordfish, and shrimp were the choices of our evening. I opted for the ribeye and was quite happy with my choice. Good flavor, possibly a touch overdone but nothing that I'm not satisfied with. For my accompaniment I went with the twice baked potato, I'm a sucker for a twice baked potato and it's so rare to see on menus. Tasty, but I added sour cream chives and butter when they were brought to our table and felt they were necessary because the potato was a little dry for my taste. I really enjoyed the homemade salad dressing, get the blue cheese..it's wonderful. Can't say I agree that olives and beets belong on a house salad, so fair warning..you may want to specify what you want on top. The bread brought to the table was very tasty, although I'd imagine it probably doesn't look that pretty in the light, so I guess it's a good thing it's dark in there! The bread is a cheesy garlic bread, the base seemed to be some sort of white bread. We ordered a couple of drinks at the table, the raspberry lemon drop was good, the peach cosmo I'd pass on. Since I only am in the area once a year, I haven't decided if this is going to be a regular spot or not, but my husband said it was his favorite place this trip. Dining at this restaurant was quite an experience the outer appearance of this building has a more younger hipper feel making me ponder rather I would experience a true feeling of a traditional steak house but after deciding to give it a try What do you know "I loved it!!" When you walk into the restaurant the feel changes you feel that old traditional familiar steak house luv.. Dining here was comfortable and just easy to do! This place is a roller coaster. It seems to have its ups and downs. It definitely makes for an interesting night to say the least. My friends and I came here this past weekend for a birthday celebration. There were supposed to be 10 of us so we made a reservation a day ahead of time. As always, I was a little early and the first one to arrive so I asked the hostess about our reservation. The first thing she starts to do was apologizing to me...not a good sign. Apparently, a party of 15 which had a reservation 2 hours before us, came 1 hour late and took up the large table which our party was supposed to use. In any case, luckily for us and for the restaurant, 4 of our party cancelled last minute so 10 turned into 6. Anyhow, we still had to wait about 15 minutes to get a table even though we had a reservation. We mad? Not at all. As a matter of fact, we got front row seats to a fight. It wasn't a physical fight but boy, was a customer IRATE! I don't know what the heck went down but he was asked to leave. The waitress who was serving his table said he was being extremely rude and they had a tiffy and the guy asked to see the owner and wanted all his money back. I wish I had some popcorn to watch this explosion. Well, after that little altercation, my friends and I were happily greeted and seated by Briana and our waitress Jennifer came to our table as if nothing happened! That's great waitressing right there. As the saying in show biz goes, "The show must go on." Since our table was taken by a tardy group of 15, we were given a smaller table that was meant for 4 but squeezed in 6 place settings. They don't have a menu, nor pricing. They have a roller cart filled with 10 different cuts of meat from filet mignon to rib eye, new york strip, lobster tail, halibut and a few others. The waitress explained it all and to our amusement, my friends and I all ordered the same thing, the 16oz. ribeye. We were 3 couples, 6 total, and we all split the dish. The rib eye was huge and even though we split it up, we were all satisfied by the end of the night. We also ordered some XYZ wine as well as an appetizer of mushrooms. Both were pretty fantastic. Jennifer, the waitress, recommended that we dip our complimentary cheese bread into the mushroom sauce and we did. I was disappointed at the quality of their complimentary bread. It wasn't all that. I didn't even mind that they didn't replenish it after my friends and I asked THREE times to replace it before they finally did. Anyway, aside from that, the rib eye was fantastic. It was very tender and tasted superb. Oh! Also, we ordered the twice baked potato which was a hit with me. I loved it. Imagine a crispy-on-the-outside potato but mashed potato on the inside. Yummy. Total COST for each person for wines, steaks, and appetizer was $35. All in all, it was a fair deal It was not a great experience but it was definitely a memorable one. Unique ambiance, fun times, awesome music, red meat and stiff drinks. What more do you need in Southern California? On the Costa Mesa/Newport Beach city line, quietly nestled under a Blockbuster Video store is La Cave. Arguably one of the greatest steakhouses I have ever been too in my life. The steaks are thick, tender, juicy and absolutely delicious. The shrimp cocktail is huge, sweet and succulent. Now let's talk about the scene. La Cave is a great place for steaks, everyone knows that, but when the last of the diners leave, the partiers start to file in. The music is bumping, drinks are stiff and the action is hot. Wednesdays are the best. There usually is a great jazz/funk quartet playing. If you're lucky, you can catch a Phil Shane show. If an Elvis impersonator and a Neil Diamond impersonator spawned a child, it would be Phil Shane. In the hoity-toity lounges of the Orange Coast where drinks are expensive and light, La Cave bucks the trend by serving inexpensive, heavy pours. Pro: when the women come, they come in packs. Decent drinks, nice atmosphere and the best chocolate mousse I've had in possibly my life? :o It comes in a chocolate bowl and there's raspberry sauce and a thin chocolate cake at the base. Be nice and share though, its huge and very rich. Only part I didn't like was trying to hear the menu and having the waitress yelling in my ear. Its as loud as a bar but it looks like a dim lit steakhouse. Oh, and asking to hear the dessert menu and her forgetting...although in her defense there were more than 20 of us. Once there you see a bar and a steak bar where all the searing and protein cooking goes down. Great set up I like unique things. Ordered: Mushrooms in butter sauce - Wow that butter sauce was just clarified butter with garlic and it was great. Dipped everything in it and now my heart hurts but it's so good. Prime rib - Best thing in the entire place. Don't order anything else. Porterhouse - It was cooked to perfection based on color but it just didn't taste that good. Costs twice as much as the prime rib too so the prime is the way to go. Twice baked mashed potatoe - Do yourself a favor and make sure you order this. Seriously! This place is my go to spot for any day of the week and loved the New Years celebration they did :) (I'll post a picture) Mario, Isidro, Josh and the head chef (wish I could remember his name) are always courteous and provide the best service that makes this place worthwhile. Twice baked potato, asparagus with mushrooms, cheese bread, are great starters (and I eat them sometimes as the course hehe) and will admit some of the dishes leave a little room for improvement (had the shrimp cocktail once) but the reason for the 4 star and not 5 star rating is due to management. It seems like ALL of the staff, from the men to the women are on edge, and once I chatted up a waitress and said it was due to them being recorded / strict management. I usually just click on this to check out for updates but saw some reviews slamming my favorites and had to clear the air, just because you want to take advantage doesn't mean your mean spirited review that's one sided isn't going to go checked. I'll definitely stop coming by if this place keeps piling on the air of tension it has already.
