In my opinion this is the best Mexican restaurant in the Houghton/Hancock area, it's authentic and very tasty. I usually get the enchilada plate which comes with both beef and chicken enchiladas, rice, lettuce and sour cream. For people that are visiting from down state, it's pretty similar to the Azteca chain restaurant when it comes to environment and food. Most of their plates are just $11, and come with a lot of food so there's usually some leftovers for later. I've also ordered their tamales, tacos and burritos and they're always on point. Not to mention the free chips and salsa right when you sit down, which is always a plus. The staff is really friendly and always gets the food out fast, it surprises me that Hancock (which isn't exactly full of culture, to say the least) is lucky enough to have such a good Mexican restaurant. Nightmare Mexican. My boyfriend ordered beef enchiladas. The waiter double-checked his order and pointed to the item on the menu. He confirmed that was what he wanted. When he received his food it was not what he ordered. Instead he was given a plate of beef in pieces with green pepper covered in a velvetta like cheese. I ordered the chicken flauntas. The chicken was very dry and poorly seasoned. I also got the house margarita. The drink looked like Baja Blast and I only could drink a few sips of it. The food was very good and came out fast. I had the Ixtapa fajitas and it was excellent. My friends and I had the chips and salsa and ordered various small dips (spinach, cheese, pico de gallo, and guacamole). They were good. All of us enjoyed our dinners. The food rated 4 stars. The only issue we had tonight was the service. The staff were polite but we waited a long time for refills and check-ins and another server had to cash us out. We arrived before many other parties that left before us. I think our server was overwhelmed with a very large group (10+) in addition to us and other smaller groups. I think the management should have been observant and stay ahead of these issues. Service was 2.5 stars because of the inattentiveness. Again, the staff were very pleasant though. The atmosphere was very nice and the decor was very colorful. The pricing is very reasonable for the quantity and quality you get here. I rate this aspect at 4.5 stars. Considering there aren't a lot of options in the area for Mexican food, La Cantina has potential. Service was solid and food selection seems on point. Will try a few more dishes on future trips, but was happy with the taco plate. Caution: The large margarita is extra, extra large. There's a solid tequila pour in it, too, which was nice... but the mix tastes like general off-the-shelf mix. Yuck -- needs more natural flavor and limes! Lots of room for improvement there. So you wouldn't expect to find really good Mexican food in the Upper Peninsula, but La Cantina makes the grade and comes tantalizingly close to getting five stars if not for the service. From the standpoint of the food, all of the boxes are being checked. The chip and dip comes out quickly, the chips are good, and the salsa has a little bit of zing to it, but not enough to scare most people off. The entrees tend to be quite good across the board and they have some uncommon fair that is well executed (e.g., chili verde). Generally, it is difficult to find something on the menu that you will not like. It also seems like they keep the overall number of ingredients down, which helps keep up the standards. On the basis of the food they could be five stars. However, the service can be quite lacking at times and some of the staff have a bit of a local reputation for being brusque. Personally I don't care if people are beaming smiles all the time, but the service industry does demand a certain degree of politeness on the part of the staff. I've also observed some incidents where employees clearly just did not want to be there that night. This knocks a star off and on a really bad night I can see La Cantina being merely OK as a whole. That being said, the food is good and generally the service is acceptable. If you are looking to try something new, or satisfy a craving for Mexican food, you don't need to leave the Upper Peninsula to do so. read more

When ordering from a new-to-me Mexican restaurant, I always choose Beef Enchiladas. If they screw that up, I'm just having tacos if I go back. Very pleased to say the shredded beef is great. I had the number 1. It comes with rice only, so had to order side of beans. Both were excellent. I wish the bean serving would have been more, lol. Looks like a great place to join friends in the bar. There's some amazing oil paints on the wall that give you a more subtle vibe than the common restaurant decor.
