Madrid is great but if I have one (minor) complaint, it's that there is no culture of fine beer. Madrid is, I'm told by the extremely knowledgeable owner of La Buena Pinta, a Mahou city. It's bad beer, but it's just what people drink. He, however, is on a mission to change this, and if you're looking for good beer I highly recommend you pay him a visit. His place is a mixture of bottle shop and bar - you go inside to browse, and sit at the stools around the outside counter to enjoy. The selection of beers is excellent; apparently he typically carries around 200 different types at once and has had about 400 different beers come through in total. In a quick browse around I spotted something from pretty much every country in Europe, plus a handful from the US. He keeps a fair number chilled and runs a couple of pumps, should you choose to sit up at the bar. On top of that he speaks great English, will help you pick something to your taste (in my case a pretty mean Imperial Stout!), and if you have the time will tell you everything you need to know about the Madrid craft brew scene. Highly recommended! read more
