The name is probably after an Irish folk ballad by Tommy Makem. We sat at the bar, as we only wanted drinks. On a Friday at 11 or 11:30 it was busy but not packed. The bartender was nice enough, but they did not know what a BLACK VELVET was! (Guinness and cider) They knew how to pour Guinness (in 2 parts) but the only cider they had was bottled, which is typical, but they looked at us as if we were nuts when we explained that Guinness is sometimes mixed with other beers/liquids to form new drinks. They need a bilingual mixologist in there if they want to attract Americans (but who said they were?) The atmosphere was upbeat, the bartenders were civil but not 'friendly' in the way I'm used to in a pub, but it was fine, I'd go back for lunch/dinner.

This little gem is serious about two things: beer and food. The menu for both is short and succinct, circumnavigating mediocrity and getting right to the point. It's walking distance from the heavily touristed historic center of Rome, and if you don't feel like walking Piazza Mancini is heavily served by city buses and ground-level light rail cars.

But apparently, at least in Rome, one needs to go to a specialty store to buy some good brew. Beer Time is a great little such store, with an impressive selection of beers from Italy, rest of Europe and some oversea names too (none of which starts with Bud). A great find, especially considering I was staying in a location far away from local tourist spots. Alessio and any of the knowledgeable people working there will answer any questions you may have about their beer selection.

I ordered it medium rare and the middle was definitely rare. This was unique for an American. Normally a medium rare steak in America doesn't come out like this... but it was good. I understand if we were loud or obnoxious but we weren't. The waitress seemingly was wrapped in fine grit sand paper. Coming to take our order she was very short and just had an attitude. She never once came back. I went out of my way to eventually get here attention for the bill. Once I did she never came back for it. I ultimately went to the bar to cash out and the bartender was equally annoyed with us. We were very impressed with the amount of food we received, the atmosphere, and kindness from our waitress. Unfortunately, we also found out there that we had been given fake money earlier in the day when we went to pay and the owner let us know that we had a fake. He was very kind about it and showed us how to recognize fake euros. Lesson learned. We had a wonderful time and we definitely will go back! (Promise to check our money next time!)
