Five star market ! Mercado Centrale de Zaragoza…read moreBuilt in the1800's it is a contemporary artistic creation by artist architect Felix Navarro Perez... Made primarily of iron and glass,  a fake period facade of brick was placed at the front to be more endearing to the citizens of that time.  It stands in the exact place as the original marketplace.  Authentic in its products. Geared towards the local clientele, one can find the freshest of meats, fish, cheese, cured products, fruits, take home to heat and serve dishes at more than reasonable prices!  We did not find any Migas or Ternesca, some foods the area is known for.  We were happy to have found the empanadillas, tortillas, and other amazing looking... ready made foods to sample. Also known as "Lanuza" as it located right on Plaza de Lanuza.  The building marks the beginning of the historical city centre and is graced by a statue of Cesar Augusto. It is easily accessible by city bus (only 1.50 euro at the time of this writing), taxi or tram.

Of course I had a half day to explore the spectacular city of Zaragoza and found out they had a decent sized market, so that was my first stop. Finding the market itself is not too difficult as you basically have to locate the largest and oldest structure in the city (The Cathedral) and right next to it is the indoor market. Some of the reasons I dropped the review to a lower three star is this market is really intended for locals in terms of picking up fresh meats, veggies, fish, and various other cooking ingredients. Out of the 20 or so stalls, only one or two had snacks or meals you could grab on the go, so really this again is geared towards local residents. With that being said, it is definitely worthwhile if you need any of the mentioned above, but if you are looking for that quintessential grazing type market, look elsewhere in the city.
