I'm sort of glad I didn't get that because I would've eaten the whole thing! The cheese was crispy on top and soft and rich beneath, and the bread... oh the bread... The portions are generous - especially the tartines - so come with an appetite! The chef was very friendly and explained the menu, and I loved the atmosphere as well. I did some research ahead of time and found la Maison d'a Cote and made a reservation, not knowing what the menu would be when we arrived. Neither of us are particularly adventurous when it comes to food so we opted for the a la carte option. We both chose the main course of wagyu beef with potatoes four ways and a dessert. My husband chose around the honey with genoise, almonds, and fresh cream sorbet. I had the chambord liqueur hot souffle. We were also served four smaller courses prior to the entree and a few small desserts after our main dessert choice. We opted for a bottle of cider to accompany our meal since we'd just been in the Normandy area the day before. A couple of the small starters were seafood based and I didn't love those (not a fan of most seafood) but it was fun to try something new. Everything else was perfect and delicious. I've never had such a beautiful meal in such a nicely decorated ambiance. The meal felt particularly special because we were seated adjacent to the chef's table. We were fortunate to have a nearly front row seat to watch the kitchen work their magic. I'd never seen the inter-workings of a high end kitchen like this and spent much of the meal watching in awe as each chef flawlessly executed their part of the meal. It was amazing how quiet it was! The staff spoke in hushed voices and the sound of the food cooking was the loudest noise coming from the kitchen. Everyone we interacted with - all of the cooks, the head chef, the waiters, and waitresses - were perfectly polite and kind to us. We really appreciated that each dish was explained to us in English as our French is abysmal. One of the waiters even quipped that this was a great opportunity to practice his English. There is a general impression of sitting in a little village house, with a chateau right outside the window. In other words, the place where servants would eat while gazing at the king's quarters. And of course, who wouldn't want to feel like a peasant? Part II: The Food (5/5) There is a focus on local, the desire to create from ingredients within kilometers of where guests sit at the delicately adorned tables and enjoy their delicately prepared meals. The local country hen was succulent and prepared with minimal intervention in order preserve the taste of the bird, served beautifully with seasonal vegetables. The cod fish was cooked to perfection and tasted wonderful despite the location being further from the coast. Ah, the wonders of modern freezing! And of course, the local Sauv Blanc from Sancerre made the meal complete with its delicate notes of lemon and crisp acidity. The bacon was just strange chunks of ham that looked like raw ground turkey (to give you a visual). As a rule of thumb I usually try to avoid seafood places cause I don't trust them to have decent non seafood options but as the only non seafood eater in the group I had to roll with it. On a plus side - if you go for mussels you'll likely leave happy. My family all left full and happy with the all you can eat mussels.
