Grand entrance courtyard in a beautiful 1730s building located adjacent to the Strasbourg Cathedral. The museum contains a large collection of Italian, Flemish, French and Dutch paintings and sculptures. On large exhibit of 19th century French artist Jean-Jacques Henner was quite nicely presented with portraits and still life and his award winning "Adam and Eve Discover the Body of Abel". I did not get the impression the building is especially handicapped accessible as the entrance required a staircase. In November 2021, they are checking COVID codes for entry. Political art, not so much. My visit started with a large exhibit explaining the history and origin of the French national anthem, La Marseillaise. Me, I love a rounding rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. When done properly, it gives me goosebumps. So to have this opportunity to learn about this song was interesting and enjoyable. From the "Chant de Guerre" that was the battle hymn for the Army of the Rhine and adapted to become Chant des Marsellois and subsequently La Marseillaise. From 1792 and through the 19th and 20th centuries, it represented a rallying hymn in the struggles for freedom. It was even taken up by Chinese students demonstrating in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Other exhibits included sculptures and art pieces and portraits, many of them absolutely interesting. I particularly enjoyed "Three Elements" (1925) by Vasilly Kandinsky and bought a print of it in the gift shop. Masks are required throughout the museum and QR codes were checked at entry. A wonderful, well organized museum that effectively brings Strasbourg's rich history to life…read morethrough creative and effective narratives (except for one) and tactile exhibits. My reason for 3 stars however is the surprising and distressing downplay of the plight of Strasbourg's jews during the nazi occupation and the heroes and villains that determined their ultimate fate. Aside from a few subtle references (there were occasional mentions) there was virtually no mention of the rise of antisemitism and the horrors inflicted on the community. The narrative chosen by the museum felt intentional leaving me to feel that 80 years later France is still ambivalent about its relationship with its Jewish community. They could have made mention of any of the numerous stories to tell such as: The "Nazi University of Strasbourg's" use of fresh Jewish specimens to experiment on as guinea pigs and where Dr. August Hirt stored them in a special liquid until needed. The posthumous award given to Chief Rabbi of France, Rene Hirschler (who was awarded the Medal of Resistance), who at great risk helped British officers flee to safety and remained in communication with the community in an effort to help them keep their spirits up. The award also given to Strasbourg Police Commissioner, Alfred Thimmesch, for -- at great risk--creating false documents for Jewish families, saving dozens and countless generations in the process. ......but no. And my feelings about this beautiful city and France in general is sadly diminished as a result.

Exhibits are well explained in English, French and German. We have been to science museums across North America and really appreciated how this one got kids thinking in new and creative ways about social issues, infrastructure and energy. They even had an outdoor element with gardens, pond, bee hives and limited playground equipment. Snacks available on site or bring your own.

There is a nominal charge, which will make sense to you later if you are in the area around the clock with 400 people, only so many people can fit The video is excellent, and is presented in French, German, and English. The clock itself is a treasured masterpiece of clock-making, astronomy, and mathematics. The storytelling is very good, as well.

It's still working, but it is blocked by scaffolding partly. Hard to take a photo of the whole thing just because of location, people, lighting and repair work, but still a wonder to behold. Created in 1929 by Hans Haug, the conservator and director from 1919-1963, Musee De L'Oeuver, Notre=Dame, is a three floor marvel of Medieval to Renaissance art spanning the time between 1347-1681. The interior of the building has all the ambiance of Medieval architecture, especially the first floor which was the meeting room for mason's and stone-cutters who worked on the Notre-Dame cathedral. Other notable areas include the Romanesque section (11th-12th) century, the Jube room features Gothic sculptures, the second floor houses arts of the 15th century and recognized artists like Conrad Witz, painter, Peter Hemmel, glass maker and Nicolas de Leyde, sculpture. The Renaissance period takes you to 1681. Goldsmith craft, tapestries and furniture have been acquired from various parts of the Upper Rhine region. The Interpretation room has the entire collection in digital form.
