I highly recommend visiting here, and it was one of the most meaningful sites I've been to, not…read morejust on this trip, but in my life!
This is an enormous cavern that both German and French soldiers lived in from 1914 to 1918. Visitors can go right down into the cavern and see for themselves how people ate, slept, had a medical room, had church services, generated electricity, and fought, all underground. Photos are mounted right there of the men who lived and died there. It felt profound and moving.
The upstairs visitors center and museum has new high tech displays with touch screen computer tables. Please have a look a my videos to see what I mean. There's also WW1 news reels playing, recorded songs you can listen to on headphones, and lots of the actual uniforms that the soldiers wore.
We were very emotionally invested in being here and went two days in a row for several hours each time to take it all in and experience, read, and learn as much as we could.
