The good: lovely new decor, super friendly and knowledgeable staff, interesting menu with some novel touches, very pretty plating, delicious and well prepared piece of meat (shared chateaubriand) and nice, crispy steak fries.
The could have been better: The gin and tonic with cracked pepper was great in theory, but quite irritating to keep getting peppercorns caught in my teeth even after ditching the straw and trying to use my lips to strain! The noise in the basement became almost unbearable with a few larger rowdy tables (apparently the restaurant is aware of the bad acoustics as there is a note posted by the bathrooms). The scallop dish was a real disappointment--between the 2 of us, we figured out we received 1.5 scallops which had been cut in small bite-sized pieces. They were cooked perfectly, but the arrangement of different types of beets did not contribute at all (they have no flavour, only crispy texture) and the different elements of the dish did not harmonise at all. The avocado mouse and salted almonds were good--maybe they should just smear more avocado mouse on the plate and position 2 decent sized scallops on top. It would have been much better.
The steak was cooked perfectly to order, and the steak fries were good and crispy, but the portions small and again the carrot puree that was under the meat did not contribute at all. We ordered our steak medium rare, so the blood from the steak puddled together with the puree in a very unappealing way. The chili fries seemed to have lost something in translation--very little seasoning and not as well cooked as the steak fries.
The dessert was a real disappointment--we were geared up for a slice of lemon meringue pie or similar, but the deconstructed dish we were served seemed old school and really didn't hit the mark. The portion was also tiny! Similarly, the Gateau Marcel could have been bounced off the floor due to far too much gelatine in the mousse. The flavour was ok, but the texture was unpleasant and not what is expected from a slice of GM.
For the price for 2 (1300 DKK for 3 small courses, 2 glasses of wine, and 2 aperitifs), you can do better. It's a shame, because the concept is good and good steakhouses are hard to come by. read more
