There were certainly plenty of Japanese speaking customers mixed in with Portuguese. And I, the odd tourist, felt right at home. The bamboo shoot and shitake mushroom appetizers were delectable. The chicken broth ramen was insipid. The Gyukatsu Kare (breaded fried beef with curry sauce over rice) was better, but not the ultra crispy panko planks I've had in some places. Maybe it was because I ordered it at the end of the night. The Brazilian brewed cold sake was really good. Could hardly tell the difference from Japanese sake. But, the highlight of the dinner of Sanma Shio--grilled pike mackerel with sea salt. Inexpensive for Sanma, uber fresh, grilled crispy so that you could crunch up the head and tail! The service was prompt, efficient and very warm. Even the owner came by to chat several times. Arigato gozaimasu! Obrigado! Thank you.

Something to keep in mind if you're considering going here and you're a visitor. Other than that, the food is pretty standard izakaya fare- not that much of a Brazilian influence from what we could tell. And we're very familiar with the genre (tons of these in the NYC) so we knew what to expect. The food is pretty tasty and the service was pretty good. The restaurant kinda feels like you walked into someone's kitchen which is pretty interesting. But overall we've actually had much better Japanese food. So there's that. But not a bad option if you're looking for something completely different in São Paulo.

This is the best sushi restaurant that must exist outside of Japan. In a word, tonight's meal was…read moresimply sublime. This neighborhood spot in Vila Madalena doesn't look like much from the outside, and its modest interior also might not suggest the amazing fish that awaits, but let it be known, Tanuki is the best I've ever had. We saddled up to the sushi bar while 4 expert sushi makers handled each fish with delicate care; I loved getting a front row seat to the beautiful display of filets. We ordered sake, miso soups (drink it from the bowl, not with a spoon), and the Combinado de Sushi e Sashimi Individual platter (despite having no idea what fish would arrive, we found the order to be spot on). 18 pieces came out of which 10 were sashimi (mixed between salmon, tuna and another fish), 4 nigiri (salmon, tuna and a white fish), and 4 uramaki (salmon on the inside and rice on the outside with sesame seeds). After our eyes rolled back into our skulls (from being so blown away by the first bite), we added another 8 uramaki rolls (tuna) to the order. If you're looking for something safe, you should just copy our order and if you don't speak Portuguese, ask for the English menu! The fish was so freaking fresh it didn't have that fishy taste you often associate with, well, fish. It was tremendous. I also don't typically like salmon and I managed to scarf down every piece that was presented to me... and then want more. Other things to note: this place is small so might not be best for a large group (or perhaps call ahead) and we arrived without reservations and were easily able to grab 2 seats at the bar around 8:30pm. As for the meal, Jiro, you have your work cut out for you!

Waiter patiently explained things in Portuguese so I can understand. Clean and ambiance inside of an underground mall. Only suggestion is the rice seemed a bit undercooked or non traditional sushi rice. Otherwise the flavor was great. I got the Nagairô especial.

Twas to be my first meal in Brazil and this place was within walking distance from the hotel. Being…read morea twat and not knowing any Portuguese, we attempted to ask if someone knew. Luckily enough, they did have someone who did. We basically ended up getting their special Rodizio, which is 87,90 Reals. What it entails, and after getting the Google Translate to reiterate, is that this is their version of All you Can Eat. Oh boy, this does not help the diet. You can order from the following, and I'll actually put it since my coworker and I ordered almost one of everything. Haha. Starters: Ceviche - slices of fresh raw fish marinated in special tiradito sauce (You'll get the lime/lemon flavor. LOL) Carpaccio - thin slices of fish/seafood. (this was actually out quickly and came before our order actually. Not too bad, a nice light tangy sauce with thin slices of fish). Chef's Starter- whatever it'll be that day. Sunomono- refreshing salad with thin slices of Japanese cucumber. Hot Roll Temaki - Rolled cone of rice and fish, seafood or spices. Sushi Bar: Combo- sushi and sashimi selection. (This was the biggest part and definitely the main course. They have a bunch of thick slices of salmon, tuna, squid, a few rolls on the side as well which are interesting and have a variety of flavors in there. I like their play on salmon and the different ways they presented it. The fish is fresh hehe and this will fill you up. Starters: Miso soup- Just alright in my case. Gohan - Rice. Harumaki- Traditional spring roll. (Kinda heavy but fried perfectly. Vegetables. Meh.) Edamame Shrimp ebichin- Crunchy wraps w/ shrimp, cream cheese, and kani Shimeji croquettes Sweet Potato Chip Gyoza- Deep fried. Kitchen Specials: Teppanyaki- Grilled meat (salmon, anchovy, chicken, meat) with sesame and veggies. You pick the meat. The fish wasn't as good here; we preferred the meat for this case. Yakisoba- Noodles with veggies and shoyu sauce. Chicken katsu Shimeji- Bites of mushroom grilled with butter, sale and shoyu (Interesting flavor, def would try this!) Tempura, Breaded squid and shrimp Dessert: Papaya cream Flambeed banana Vanilla ice cream w/ choco syrup. Also they have Coke Zero! I really enjoyed eating their mushroom dish because the flavor was really good (I enjoy having mushrooms too). A lot of butter but still. Trying their breaded items was really heavy, but one of them had cream cheese inside and ruined my diet. Chicken katsu was kinda dry but they provide the sauces. I really enjoyed the sushi bowl, but kinda wished they did it like the other places did with a sushi boat. There's a lot though, so not gonna fault them for that. The food actually came out at an alarming rate, but maybe because we were eating everything and things just came out came out came out. We had a lot of stuff on our table at one time - kinda felt just a tad bad haha. But we did finish everything! It was nice because we were able to do outdoor seating and it was a bit chilled outside, so it was nice enjoying that. It was also nice trying to talk to our server as well and get to know each other. Want sushi? They'll satisfy and then some.
