This was the first communal burial place in Düsseldorf and dates back to May 1805 but reached…read morecapacity and was closed for new burials in 1884 and then family plots with empty grave sites remained open until 1897.
The cemetery is split in two parts, with the northern section in the Golzheim District and the southern part in the Pempelfort District. The Klever Straße divides them and that was apparently a thing to move graves for the roadway. Overruling protests from the community, part of the cemetery was leveled and the remains in these graves were removed to be buried in a mass grave in the north part of the cemetery.
Since WWII, the cemetery had fallen into disrepair and several sections were sold for a parking lot and for other buildings. Despite that, some 350 markers remain. The cemetery is now quite well maintained by volunteers and is in very good condition. It's clear that there is some love here as many of the grave sites had candles and memorials.
A map of the more notable sites and interrments is posted at two entrances to the cemetery. Take some time to stop by and walk through. Stay on the paths, please.
