We started at Kumon in west portal when my son wasn't reading so well at the end of kinder. He is now starting second grade and he is excelling in math and reading with the help of Kumon. Not sure we saw much benefit other than structure and consistent work, but i think the kumon model is what it is. Checked out both Kumon and Sylvan. My child entered kindergarten young. So, now entering 2nd grade he is at below average. Went to both tutoring schools and was surprised at the differences. Basically it's like this... Sylvan is an actually tutor that works with your child. I think the ratio is 1 to 3 students. The child didn't just arrive but rather is on an appointment schedule. The teachers really seem to care. I know that isn't saying much but that's how I feel. Kumon is very different. There really isn't the tutoring feel over here. Again, since I decided to not sign up I can only tell you from what I've experienced. The child appears and is given worksheets. These worksheets need to be completed and then brought back to the person in charge for grading. At that time, I suppose the students would receive coaching if necessary. My question is, what if the student doesn't want to do the worksheet. Or, if the student is distracted and doesn't complete the work sheet, what happens? I think that too much responsibility is placed on the student. Which I understand is not a bad thing. Remember not all students can handle that responsibility. Which is probably the reason why they need after school tutoring. In my opinion, I want more responsibility put on the teacher. After all, this isn't a public school. I am paying a lot of money for this. I'm sure that Kumon will work for many. But it's not for me. (After two months of Sylvan, my son was rated at or above 2nd grade reading) read more

My two sons have been coming to the West Portal location since they opened, so years. Tony and his staff are wonderful and organized. I would not say the boys love Kumon because it is like homework, but the staff at the West Portal location are wonderful and supportive to my kids and the work they do at the center. My son has been here for almost a year. Teachers really patient, and more importantly, they are really encouraging and listening. My son really wants to do multiplications sooner (don't know why...), and the teacher worked with him to develop a plan on the plus/minus. He was so excited and proud when he passed the test and can do multiplication! I think the most important about extra-curriculum is about building confidence and interest, and I think the teachers there just do that! read more

I started my 3 year old daughter at West Portal Kumon about 5 months ago with a purpose to learn English to get her ready for Kindergarden. I can say that thanks to Kumon her vocab increased tremendously and she is getting better and better at understanding and practicing English. We chose this Kumon location over the one on Ocean Ave or the Judah location for several reasons: 1) Much easier to find parking (especially if you come after 6pm, meters are free) 2) Teacher to child ratio for kids my daughters age is 1:2 (often times 1:1) 3) You can see your child directly from the waiting area. No walls/doors separating the two rooms. Huge plus for parents whose child is young and won't stay in class without you there. 4) Tony, the owner, asks you to commit to a specific time block to ensure that there's always a teacher to work with your child and you never have to wait for a spot to open up. I have taken my cousins here on numerous occasions for class. The center director, Tony, is extremely understanding and helpful, which means a lot to the students. The rest of the staff seem to know what they are doing and are extremely patient with the students. Definitely a place that will further the learning capabilities of the students. read more

My child isn't doing kumon, but I went to check it out for reading. My daughter was 5 and goes to a french immersion school and I worried about her falling behind in english. The owner or director did some testing on my daughter and I don't think he had a great demeanor with her. My child was a little nervous and acting up a bit. He said she knew her letters and the basics but he recommended that she start from the beginning and also he thought she was behind in the way she grasped her pencil weirdly enough. The teachers at her French school also did not like her grip. That's my last concern, but maybe I'm wrong. Anyways he told me someone would contact me regarding enrollment. I think they were mostly full and no one contacted me. It was okay since I don't think it was a good fit for my daughter and she was not interested in it. Fast forward over a year and my daughter is doing fine without kumon and doesn't need extra help. Also I heard from parents who have kids in kumon that it is mostly taught by completing worksheets and having adults correct them. My child doesn't like that method of learning as she's more visual. I think some parents like taking their kid to kumon for the extra advantage of being ahead or if they are struggling with math or reading, but I just want a happy well adjusted child. As long as my child is doing okay at school I won't look for extra helpl. read more

This Kumon is great Tony always greets with a smile and always willing to accommodate parents and kids crazy schedules. He is very caring and you really feel like he knows the need of your children. His staff are also awesome! Shout outs to Didi at the front desk, she's always very calm and organized, never once rush you because there are ten kids standing in line waiting to sign in. Serena, my son's tutor is the coolest. She's so patience when working with the little kids.
