Sands of Kahana - TV fell off of the wall

Sands of Kahana

Our first time at the Sands of Kahana in Maui. I had read all of the reviews raving about the…read moreplace. Overall, I agree but there were a few keys issues that affected our stay. First, the atrium is open between all of the floors in the middle. Consequently, noise echoes into all of the rooms with luggage wheels rolling, people talking and laughing or screaming. It is quite startling when dead asleep. Second, there is no air conditioning. All of the windows need to be open for air, which also contributes to the noise level. We thought it petty to charge for coffee after the first day of the stay. We had booked a two bedroom and were given a loft with a downstairs bedroom with two full beds. That too, was disappointing as my husband and I booked it, but felt compelled to give the other couple we were vacationing with the larger bed upstairs. Overall, the space was very spacious with vaulted celings in the living room and huge kitchen that was well equipped, clean, and had easy access to the beach. There are some lounge chairs available on the beach, inside the roped area on the hotel side, but they do fill up fast. There is a strip type mall across the street had a small grocery store and eating places, including Miso Phat. Good sushi! If you read this and stay, you will be well informed as to what to expect.

Biggest annoyance tho, was that our unit hadn't been properly cleaned. Some personal items left behind from a former occupant, and most of the dishes and glassware had to be washed before they were suitable for use. While there are plenty of fans, there's no air conditioning, which is a huge miss for a tourist resort catering to folks not necessarily used to this heat. Unlikely to return here. Lots of choices nearby, will go somewhere else next time.

The free valet was fantastic, and the room was spacious, clean, and had a gorgeous ocean view. We had an issue with our mattress and it was never comfortable. That was the big bummer of the stay. They replaced our mattress after we said something but it didn't fix the issue. When we laid down, we always felt like where laying way back like toward the headboard, feet higher than our head. It may have been a bed frame issue. It wasn't the worst, we just ended sleeping the other way. You have to call housekeeping to get service. That was super easy and they did a great job. All staff on site were wonderful. The grounds were well-kept, and we loved spending time by the pool--there were a few different pools, each with its own unique feel. Surprisingly, we went down the slide several times (haha it's not just for kids). Duke's on the property was a big plus. They had servers taking orders pool side. The food trucks nearby were fantastic, dealing distance away, and so much variety. they're open u til 8pm. Overall, it was a great experience, and I would definitely come back.

We were taking photos on the property and then he bent the knee on the beach. Honestly, we had such a great time the first time we were here that we returned for our, super late due to Covid, Honeymoon last month. I love the size and location of the property. From the pools, amenities and the gorgeous view. The rooms are condos that come with kitchens, laundry and balconies. The first time we stayed we did a one bedroom partial ocean, but this time around we did a studio and enjoyed the full ocean view. The staff have spoiled us with some sweet congrats cookies that we really enjoyed. This property also has a Dukes on site which is super convenient. They do get busy though so we've just ordered to-go and enjoyed our food on the balcony. One thing I wish this hotel did have would be a cafe, or some kind of coffee on site. There's a market in the other tower, but the building we stayed in has one under construction. I'm hoping they put a coffee spot because it would be perfect! We love the location and feel when we come here and the included parking is a HUGE plus! I couldn't recommend the Honua Kai more and we look forward to more visits here in the future.

CONS: Pool is open 7am-10pm but towel service is 7am-7pm so if you go after 7, you have to bring your own towel. There's no restaurant onsite. There's a snack bar. There's a buffet breakfast that is nice but not great. Parking garage is confusing when it comes to finding your vehicle. Space is limited. Overall, the entire Ka'anapali area is quiet and nice. Everything closes down by 8/8:30pm so if you're looking for an active night scene, Ka'anapali isn't the spot for you. They will try to get you to go to a presentation about timeshares. But it does have a lot of other things going for it. Our favorite is the location to the boardwalk and the super easy access to the most beautiful beach. Perfect for morning walks. Snorkeling is incredible there. Also turtles, sometimes dolphins, monk seals and tons of whales during whale season. You have to pay $90 for two beach chairs and an umbrella. $36 for just an umbrella. Parking is $35 a night. It all adds up quickly. If you want a lounge chair at the pool, you have to get up by 5 AM to get the one you want. They have activities all day and live music most nights- really enjoyable to sit by the fit pit, watch the sunset and live. The rooms are hit and miss. Sometimes we get an ocean view where you can see a sliver of water. Another time we were next to their laundry units, which were loud. Other times we were ocean front and it was incredible to watch the whales. The little kitchenette is perfect. They are well stocked. And I love that you can do laundry. They clean the rooms every two days but you can ask for supplies if you need anything.

My sister called me crying today because the treated like a criminal. She received a text at 1:30 while on the beach telling her that she had to get out of her villa. She ran to the front Bobby and was told that she had 20 minutes to get her stuff out of the villa and was escorted to her to her Villa by security. They made her move rooms and then charged her 2600 for two nights. Of course she is disputing it because they're crazy. Erwin the manager of kaanapali Ocean resorts was rude also. He told her he would be back and left my sister sitting in the lobby. Then somebody named ryland came over and she was also more rude than the next person and actually turned her back and walked away. If you have a choice DO NOT stay at the Westin kaanapali Ocean Resort. There's plenty of other nice resorts where you'll be treated with respect and not a criminal. This is the kind of stuff you can't make up. Absolutely a true story. Worst vacation experience ever!

She allowed me to talk until I was calm (I get a little nervous with a new person) and made sure I was very comfortable. The massage felt so good I almost fell asleep. I felt amazing afterwards. No aches and pains. I felt 20 years younger. Thank you Holly. You're amazing!!! I came back 3 days later and had a massage from Piper. It was not relaxing. I'd call it more energizing. She worked the muscles hard. A very different massage. I definitely did not fall asleep during this massage. No talking, the music was annoying and the temperature was extreme. Sadly not my preference but might be someone else's. (My impression was the Holly let the client direct the massage where Piper told the client how the massage was going to happen). I will make sure I request Holly and change my schedule to match hers if necessary. She relaxed my muscles and touched my heart and soul. Mahalo. The receptionist is really sweet. She's nice to talk to and very knowledgeable about the shop and various things in the shop. She remembered my name when I called back to switch days and times. Susie was a great attendant. Everything was clean and well stocked. She even made sure the kettle water for my tea was hot. Thank you!!!

I really enjoyed my recent stay at the Westin in Kaanapali. I'd say that it checked the boxes in…read moreevery regard that was important to me - convenience, great location, updated facilities, and family friendly. I came here late April 2026. When you first arrive and walk into the lobby, it is quite stunning. I don't know when their latest renovation was, but it feels updated within the past 7-8 years, modern but also keeping that nice Hawaiian touch. You're welcomed by several live plants and flowers covering the walls in the breezeway when you walk towards the front desk, and can spot a waterfall and koi pond. Rooms - As Marriott Bonvoy members, we luckily got upgraded to the room with view of ocean and expansive pool area - literally looks like the picture featured on this Yelp review. It's a stunning view. The room itself was also nicely updated! It felt modern, yet still cozy and inviting. We got 2 queens, and it seems that every room comes with a balcony. We all loved the balcony - great way to be outside and enjoy the weather, live music, and dry your swimsuits. Anyway, the room itself was very comfortable, and it's hard to find updated rooms in Maui for a somewhat decent price. I think my only complaint is that it was a bit small - it was ok for the 3 of us (2 adults + 1 toddler), but I can't imagine coming here as a family of 4 with teenagers, and have to squeeze into the small room. Swimming pools - there were several to choose from, including a designated kid's pool, regular pool, and adult only pools. They were each nicely designed and landscaped with the trees - there were several slides for each pool, and designed in such a way where you couldn't even notice them. Also, the adult pool was hidden, so little ones aren't tempted to access the adult only pool, and I'm sure it worked well the other way by not being able to hear the kids! The towel process was a little annoying. We were given several towel cards good for each towel. But the annoying thing was that we had to carry separate towel cards separate from our room key, that was a wristband. Might as well just combine the two to make it more convenient for guests? Not that it was a huge hinderance - just a suggestion. Beach access - you are basically right there, on a public beach. It was extremely convenient to be right there, grabbing our towels from the hotel and using them for the beach. If you want lounge chairs, umbrellas, etc. though, you will have to pay a fee to rent them. Obviously it's not as nice as other hotels that have that all set up for you, like we've experienced in other countries, but hey, it's just the Westin. Restaurants - There aren't too many restaurants to choose from here - but we did really enjoy the Hale Moʻolelo Restaurant/Bar. We didn't actually eat here at all, but enjoyed cocktails here every night. They have live music DAILY each evening, and welcome all ages, including our toddler. I was getting tired of the Hawaiian tiki drinks, started ordering regular cocktails, which were decent. The live music alone was wonderful each evening. There was also the Ulu Kitchen by Merriman's, which we were somewhat interested in trying, but never got around to it. Marriott Bonvoy members also get free breakfast with their stay. They did not have a designated breakfast restaurant, unfortunately, but rather they gave us credit for the convenience store that served hot food and other beverages. They had options such as Loco Moco, scrambled eggs and potatoes, acai bowls, spam masubi. Honestly it was all very disappointing food - my daughter really only liked the spam masubi that didn't seem worth it for one entree item. We did utilize the free beverage for bottled water each day though, which was convenient. Location - was wonderful too. It was located right next to Whaler's Village, which is a shopping center with lots of restaurants, coffee, an ABC store, etc. It's a short walk, and we walked here each morning to get coffee, have my toddler run around, and also walk around with her in the stroller during her naps. The hotel is also located with just a few minutes drive to Lahaina, where more restaurants were. Amenities - they have random pet parrots that come out during the daytime, which my daughter loved seeing each day. Fun to see the fish in the koi pond. Also, they have random vendors/activities in their breezeway where the shops are, including pineapple tasting, hat making, etc. which can be fun for the little ones. The arcade was also pretty amazing. Some of the games have this "play until you win" feature, which was really nice for all kids playing to win something. My daughter was hooked. Elevators can be slow. We found that the ones located on the side closest to the front desk were faster than the ones closer to the Arcade! Just realize that this place seemed like it was intended for families, but it was executed quite nicely. Would highly recommend.

They have almost nightly Luau activity till later than we sometimes stay up after getting up at sunset and a Long Beach day. It's fine to see and hear once but this is ridiculous. They also host huge corporate events that literally take over the whole place and make late noise. Rooms are tiny that we saw others in and staff is clueless. They let people have room parties until well into the morning keeping the whole floor loud even after asking their feckless security to handle it. Like 2am with 20 plus people in a little room and slider door open. Staff just began to hang up when called and it took going to the front desk and yelling a lot to affect the closure of one of these room parties. Good luck with the sea of crap around the pools too! We have stayed at the other Westin North before and it wasn't much better so we won't be staying at a Westin anytime In the future.
