mural shows a pineapple atop the mountains of Hawaii. it symbolizes the pineapple & sugar interests who have oppressed Native Hawaiians since they collaborated with missionaries & U.S. marines to overthrew the sovereign constitutional monarch in 1893. Hawaii was annexed by the U.S. in 1898.
Kukia'i Mauna means "Guardian of the Mountain (Mauna Kea)". Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the Hawaiian Islands. when plans were announced to build an astronomical observatory atop Mauna Kea, there was mass protests against same plans. it didn't succeed.
Mauna Kea is sacred land to Native Hawaiians. it's worshiped as a shrine, a home to (Hawaiian) gods, and as the birthplace of the Hawai'i Islands.
from 1919 to 1959, everyone on Hawaii except Native Hawaiians wanted statehood. Congress declined primarily due to anti-Asian animus.
