Very bright space, simple and minimal interior design, which I love. Straight forward. Very international. Reminded me of many things I loved in L.A. and Tokyo.
Wandering around the heart of Old Town Zurich and stumbled upon a Japanese grocer…read more I walked in to casually browse the store to see what they have to offer in comparison to the international grocers in the States! The store is pretty small, it has your typical kitchen goods (cutlery, plates/bowls, etc.), sauces, snacks, souvenirs, dry goods, refrigerated section, small freezer section (dumplings etc.), and sweets. They do not have produce though! I think it has most of the essentials! The interior is clean, and the store is well organized. Some of the items were pretty expensive in comparison to what I am used to in the States, but everything in Zurich is more expensive!
I like YumiHana and for one specific reason: they have natto! I like to eat Natto for breakfast now…read moreand then but when I moved to Switzerland I sorta already accepted that I would no longer to be able to eat natto. So I was super happy to see that they stock not only one but three sorts of natto. Also, the price was quite reasonable (for Switzerland), I did notice that there were some other things like Kimchi were on the expensive side compared to other ethnic stores. Another plus is that YumiHana is clean and well organized- unlike some other Asian stores in Zurich. The store is quite small but well stocked: they have a wide range of Japanese and Korean cooking essentials which are often difficult to find in Europe. I found many of my faves: matcha KitKat, a small tub of gochujang (suited for the small fridges here), barley tea, good quality noodles, umeboshi, mirin etc. All the products were of good quality when I later cooked with then and ate them so I will be back for my natto fix!

Note: this review is only for coffee service at the bar…read more I've been a few times already to the bar of the Markthalle resto for a cafe crema or two and a schale. The schale is akin to a bitchin' latte a la 'third wave coffee' and, three times now, I've been very happy with both the flavor and the appearance. If you're a bit of a coffee snob, and wandering around the Markthalle (trams 4, 17, 13/Dammweg stop), then order a Schale at the bar. You'll probably be happy that you did so! During the day, there usually only seems to be one person working the bar (which is of fairly decent size) that also services the floor, so you may have a wee wait when ordering your drink.

This place has small interdependently owned shops so each step you take brings you to a different shop. There is everything for everyone! There were cheese shops, Italian food, beer/liqueur, a restaurant in the back, small bakery, a section of teas, cheeses/dried meats, fish market & perfect if you wanna take a small trinket home. The night that I came in they had a small band playing in the front so it had a nice ambiance to the space. I strongly recommend to visit this place, and don't forget to bring a large bag to put in your new goodies!

Things I dug: Freitag products--same price as at the Freitag shop, felt trivets in the shape of those floral-patterned, non-slip, bathtub thingies (that my grandma had), gorgeous wood cutting boards, fab French glassware with matching carafe... One of my favorite small gadget store in Kreis 5 !…read more You will find this store on the Josefstrasse. You have to enter the place via the back of the house. They sell a lot of kitchen stuff, home decorations, gadgets, Freitag bags, and some clothes. The store is really not full. It is all cool stuff (hipsterish). I always come here to buy a card, birthday, wedding, etc... They really have a cool selection. Or just for a present. If you don't know what to buy, you will for sure find something here for your hipsterfriend :) PS: walk around on the street in this area, you will find other nice small stores.
My favorite Migros in the whole Zürich city!…read more This 2M Migros has just about everything I need plus a restaurant and takeaway upstairs for when you just don't feel like cooking or going out to eat. Unlike a lot of the other Migros, this one not only has the self check out machines, but also the scanner so you can see exactly what you've bought, how much you are spending, and how much you are saving while you shop. Then just return the scanner and pay at a kiosk. So efficient and convenient. Light years ahead of the rest of them! Another reason why Kreis 5 is the best place to live in Zürich.

There are proper sections for fish, meat, cheese that you can choose and ask for certain quantity, instead of picking up pre-packed ones. Half of the store has non-food items for sale. I'm not sure about the price vs. quality but you can find just about everything including bag, clothes, etc. Other than that, most items are what you can find at other regular Migros. PS: Opens till 2000 weekdays.
