I think that this beach is more popular and visited than Waikiki Beach. It is really hard to tell the beaches apart and see their lines of demarcation. Here is a tip. One of the beaches end is marked by by Kapahulu Groin, a walled storm drain with a walkway on top that juts out into the ocean. The other end is the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Hotel. Kuhio Beach has protected swimming, outrigger canoe rides, body boarding, and surfing. This beach is home to the Honolulu Police Department, the world famous Duke Kahanamoku statue, the Prince Jonah Kūhiō statue and the Stones of Life monument. The park is named after Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana'ole and is on the site of Pualeilani, the home of the Prince and his wife. In 1918, the prince removed a high board fence, opening a section of the beach to the public. After his death in 1922, the property was given to the city and Kuhio Beach Park was officially dedicated in 1940. There is metered street parking, commercial lots and commercial garages within a reasonable walking distance. I will warn you that the garages and lots can get a bit pricey. The beach is is nicknamed "Kūhiō Ponds" because it is divided by two concrete wall enclosures that stretch about 40 yards into the ocean that provides protection for swimmers. The beach is very clean, they have lifeguard stations along the beach and you can even get surf lessons here. There is a little cafe right on the beach and there are other eateries, restaurants and bars within a very reasonable walking distance from the beach. The beach plays host to free public events including music and hula performances and fireworks on Friday. You can also rent beach chairs, umbrellas, and paddle boards right on the beach as well. You can see some amazing sunsets and sunrises from this beach. I really like this beach and always end up here when I am in Waikiki. This is my favorite of the all of the Waikiki beaches and highly recommend that you check it out for some fun in the sun. read more

The beach has restrooms, showers, and lifeguards. It's a 5-7-minute walk from the nearest houses and hotels, which is a big plus, not to mention the price. The beach is separated by breakwaters, so you can safely swim with children. We visited in the morning at 7:30-8 am with my 7-year-old daughter. She snorkeled and watched the fish. The fish on this beach aren't very diverse, but she enjoyed it. Around 9 am, the beach became more crowded. In the evening, the beach gets crowded. I give it 4 stars because I like waves and don't like crowded beaches. read more

Kuhio Beach is the beach adjacent to Waikiki Beach. It's a little less crowded and a little more peaceful but not by much. Regardless, there are still great views of Waikiki Bay. There are beach chairs laying along the beach for you to rent along with surfboards, paddleboards, and other equipment. A few steps south of the Waikiki Beach, this beach is still part of iconic Hawaii visions. It is definitely very touristy and can be quite crowded, but you can manage that with good timing. There is no parking unless you pay to use any of the hotel ones or go farther down past the end of the hotel strip and walk back up. The waters are not too deep so it's great for young families and less seasoned swimmers. If you swim out a bit, there are great areas to catch a wave on a boogie board or surf board...which is why this beach will always be a classic place to come. There are also areas nearby for a catamaran tour. There are no shortage of vendors who will try to make a buck off of you. In the end, if you can look past the hustle and bustle, the natural beauty is gorgeous here and there is definitely a reason thousands of visitors and locals come back. Probably one of the busiest beach in Oahu. Located between the Kapahulu Groin & the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Hotel, Kuhio Beach Park is part of the long stretch of Waikiki Beach. The Prince Kuhio Statue, The Duke Kahanamoku Statue & The Stones of Kapaemahu are among the 3 popular landmarks located in here. Oahu history is dang satisfying to a savvy like me! LoL. You can also go snorkeling in here too! This beach is protected by a seawall which makes even kids enjoy while floating/swimming. Just be careful coz sometimes big waves will just splash on the wall that I find it myself scary. Hahaha. In my point of view, this beach ain't a hidden gem anymore. Situated in the heart of Waikiki this beach is packed with touristy people. There were also locals but mostly companies from the mainland who let other people rent beach gears. Prices vary. This is a wonderful family style beach especially if you have small kids. The jetty blocks big waves, and the water is especially shallow at parts. We showed up here around 9am and there were plenty of spots to sit. We set up an umbrella and chairs closer to the street and had a great vantage spot. The beach was very clean, thanks to the efforts of an older man who very kindly went out of his way to pick up random trash. Loved spending the day here. I grabbed a snorkel and floated near the jetty, where I saw some moorish idols eating. I also saw a small school of fish near the shore and some convict tang. Crabs were also easily seen on the rocks, which are a bit slippery so be careful. Snorkleing is not something you would come here for, as there aren't many fishes, but if you have one handy it's fun to look. read more

Pacific Island Beach Boys. People renting equipment to tourists have rented the storage shed for their surfboards and other items. But apparently commandeered every bench in front of their shop too, and told us that the cones meant we weren't allowed to be back there. It's one of Waikiki's prime real estate that millions of tourists come each year to bathe in the iconic tourist trap that we call Waikiki Beach. Kuhio Beach park is one part of Waikiki that usually gets the most tourists. I usually don't do Waikiki, but when I do, it's usually on this side of Waikiki, so I can hop on the bus and head home soon after I am done with my time in Waikiki. On this recent trip to Waikiki, I arrived at Kuhio Beach park alone to take the edge off of this whole quarantine thing we got going on in Hawaii. The scene was quite empty, since I was here during the day and it was a work day and hardly anyone was here to enjoy such raw beauty. With that said, I set up shop near the Starbucks Kapahulu store and the Duke Kahanamoku statue with a beach towel and a few bottles of water. I intended to stay around 3 hours, but didn't have a beach umbrella. Sunscreen is definitely the name of the game here on the sand. During my time here at the Kuhio Beach Park here on the eastern side of Waikiki, people watching was one of the things you can do. I did that and watched the waves coming onto shore, as well, leaving the shore. It was cool to see the kids playing in the water with their parents watching. Made me think of better days in the past, and that tomorrow where we can do that stuff again. The hustle and bustle of tourist life is here, although with COVID 19 here in 2020, that's anything but. We try to make it work for the sake of the community. The time spent outside here in Waikiki was worth it, although be mindful about social distancing and wearing face covering, so nothing happens after a day at the beach.I ended up not taking a dip in the ocean that day, since it was better to just enjoy the water from afar. The ocean was pretty tame that day and the weather was nearly perfect, although it was warm even though it was September. There are food options nearby, depending how long you stay in the area. Best bet would be to eat before you come and pack a small snack to have while at the beach. It can be crowded here, depending on when you come, but best bet would be to eat before you come, just so you can have this experience in a budget friendly zone. For the most part though, the experience was as iconic and positive as you can imagine it out to be. Just be mindful of your belongings and you should be okay. The beach itself is maintained by the good folks at the City and County of Honolulu and the State of Hawaii, I believe. If you decide on coming here, generally avoid the crowds by coming early to secure the best parking spot. Generally, parking is usually anywhere you can find nearby. If you are like me, bus routes 14, 19, 20, 22, and 23 come thru the area and it's about a block away from the action. I can call Kuhio Beach Park here in Waikiki a hidden gem, although it is known worldwide by all. The overall (recent) experience here at Kuhio Beach Park was nice and relaxing. It was more relaxing because of the lack of crowds here at the beach. While it may be nice to some people, I rather have it sorta busy, so you know that the hotel industry is humming and not as deserted as it is during the COVID pandemic of 2020. Kuhio Beach Park is located along the famous Waikiki beach strip, with Kalakaua Avenue and a dozen hotels overlooking the ocean. You can't miss it really. Like all public beaches, Kuhio Beach Park is definitely and absolutely free. Most of the beach is litter free, so it's nice to see that. I did enjoy the ambiance and how nature takes care of you spiritually and emotionally, only if you take care of nature physically. If you decide to come here, be respectful and clean up after yourself after using the beach. It's best to see the sunset and sunrise here. It's definitely can be the best thing you can do for yourself. The power of nature is so amazing. Ahh, Kuhio Beach Park is one of the beaches that my family would come to whenever we'd want to hit the cool, clear waters of Oahu's South Shore. It's actually located WITHIN Waikiki Beach. Kuhio Beach Park stretches from the Honolulu Police Department, Waikiki City Station (near intersection of Kalakaua Avenue and Uluniu Street) to the intersection of Kalakaua and Kapahulu Avenues. There are 3 landmarks within the Kuhio Beach Park. Starting from the HPD Waikiki Station and moving towards Kapahulu Avenue, you'll find the "Wizard" Stones of Kapaemahu, the Duke Kahanamoku statue, and the Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole statue. Also, located within the park, there are two famous surf breaks, Queen's and Canoes where annual surf meets are held. At the intersection of Kalakaua and Kapahulu Avenues, there is a concrete "groin" which marks the Waikiki Marine Life Conservation District. There is a sandy area where folks can sunbathe, play beach volleyball and on some evenings, enjoy a movie under the stars. You can wade out (low tide) over the reef and swim in the open area beyond. Through the years, erosion has taken a lot of sand from the beach and somehow, there seems to be a lot shorter distance to walk from sidewalk onto the beach than I remember. This is the Waikiki area beach where a lot of the locals go, to avoid the overcrowded main portion of Waikiki. Kuhio Beach is located at the foot of Kapahulu where it meets Kalakaua. You have great views of the Royal Hawaiian and Moana Hotels. In addition, Duke Kahanamoku's statue is also close by. The water is cleaner and it is a lot more relaxing here compared to other parts of Waikiki. You are less likely to have your items stolen here as well. This is the beach that everybody in Waikiki goes to. The shore is crowded, and the water is crowded. Just look at the place on Google Maps. Holy Kahuna, that's a lot of surfboards in the water. The waves are small-medium sized, so they'll carry your board a couple hundred feet, but you won't run the risk of drowning. Bummer, I know. The greatest danger is probably the rocks as you go further out. I cut my toe on one. Fortunately there were no blood-smelling sharks in the area. There's also a "pool" area behind a rock wall which blocks the waves, allowing people to relax in a calmer aquatic setting. The natural landscape of the beach is beautiful (it's Hawaii, after all). And it's walkable from most hotels in Waikiki. If you're hanging out here all day, you don't even need a car. I'd come here again, but earlier in the day to avoid some of the crowds! read more

We spent two days at this Beach during our stay. We went here because it was conveniently located close to our Condo. The beach is well protected from the waves. Activity is well protected from the road due to its distance. People were being courteous to beachgoers. The general area appeared to be safe for tourists. There is good photo ops with the Duke statue, large banyan tree, sunset, etc. Do check out the free Hula show at the beach every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Ian had a blast playing with the waves, building his castles, paddle boarding, and generally being silly. If you are staying nearby, this should be your beach destination. read more

Kuhio Beach Park is my main go to beach when I am in Honolulu. Simply because it is a short walk from my house. This beach melds with Waikiki Beach to the point where I am sure many people think this is actually Waikiki Beach. The location is prime. It is near several attractions including Honolulu Aquarium, Honolulu Zoo and Kapiolani Park. I don't go into the water, but this would be a relatively safe place to do so. This is because the beach has a seawall and enclosed ocean pool area. So it would be a decent place for the kiddies learning to swim. This beach is definitely touristy, but the locals do come here too. It is a rather crowded beach, so looking for a good space to plop your beach towel might be a slight challenge. I like Kuhio Beach because it is the most convenient beach to get a sun tan for me. Even though it draws a crowd, I find it to be a good beach with nice scenery and for people watching. read more

There is a small statue situated here slightly south of the beach, called "Makua and Kila" which is based on a children's story. Kuhlo beach is situated just north of Queen's beach. Palm trees, clear waters, light colored soft sand, good looking people, lots of shopping available nearby, what more could you ask for!? Kuhio Beach Park (Kalakaua & Kapahulu) We crossed this park on our way to the Barefoot Beach Café. This park is located near the end of the Kalakaua Avenue and the zoo. Just based on what I observed, this park isn't packed with tourist and is somewhat peaceful. A big portion of the park is shaded by the huge trees and still close enough to the beach. We didn't stay long, but long enough to watch the beautiful sunset. If you're looking for a nice shaded park in Honolulu minus the crowds, then look no further. This beach area is tucked away from Waikiki beach and somewhat of a hidden gem. My hotel was a five minute walk from Kūhiō Beach Park. Kūhiō beach is not as crowded as Waikiki beach. My first night in Hawaii, I visited Waikiki beach and it was so packed with tourists, I tried to take a picture in front of the oceanic sunset and there were so many people in the background, I decided to forgo taking pictures and simply enjoyed my walk along the beach. During my walk along Waikiki beach I learned of Duke Kahanamoku, who was an exceptional human being and revered by so many Hawaiians. When I can back from Waikiki beach, in the opposite direction, I discovered Kūhiō beach park and fell in love. No matter what time of day, it was not as crowded with tourists. There were a mix of natives and tourists hanging out at the beach. There is a surf stand with water equipment rentals, a bathroom building, and an outside shower stall to rinse salt water off. What was fantastic were the firework show hosted by Hilton Hotel and fire dancing show right on the beach each Friday evening. read more

Do doesn't love Waikiki? The Kuhio Beach Park is the easiest beach to get to and is within walking distance from most of the major resorts on the Waikiki Strip. The sand is soft and the people are friendly. Considering this is probably the most popular beach on the island, everyone and I mean everyone flocks here. With beautifully clear water and palm trees lining the area, it makes for great pictures. You'll find tons of women in teeny weenie bikinis and once in a while you'll find a dude in a hot pink thong as well.. don't look for him, he'll find you lol. Food and drinks are available within footsteps and are reasonably priced. If you're wanting to go a few steps off from Kuhio Beach Park, you can visit any convenient store located directly across the street. Once in a while there will be homeless locals that will ask you for change but that's expected. Once you get here, you can't help but feel relaxed. There is a small grassy area too, great to sit and enjoy the views and sounds of the waves crashing. As this is toward the zoo, it is less crowded and it's easier to find a little real estate to enjoy the fresh ocean smell and cool breeze. Can't wait to get back! Mahalo read more

A nice beach protected by the Waikiki Wall. It's a family friendly beach with shallow waters. Kuhio Beach was recommended to us for snorkeling. Supposedly, there is an abundance of fish along the Waikiki Wall which protects it. The day that we visited, the waves were breaking over the wall. So, the visibility near the wall was poor and we didn't see many fish. Even though the snorkeling was a bust, we had fun playing in the water. There are showers available to wash off at after enjoying your time at the beach. It's located near restaurants and markets if you want to grab something to eat or drink. I'd recommend Kuhio Beach to anyone who wants to play in the water without being knocked around by waves. read more

This gorgeous beach park sprawls parallel to the busiest sections of Waikiki. It was only about eight blocks from our hotel, and it seems like all of the various hotels and resorts basically pour onto it, which can lead to heavy crowds on the weekends. The water is crisp and blue, the sand is soft and white, and there are generally some solid crowds around. There was some kind of event going on at the beach on the weekend that we really walked through it. Looked like it might have been a surf competition. Lots of tents and vendors set up, but there was still large sections available for the general public just about a quarter mile down the way. read more

Its crowded! It's full! But is it close? Of course! It's Honolulu what do you expect? It's going to be crowded with tourists and kids. Regardless its always my go to beach in Honolulu since its the location is so convenient and easy to reach from downtown. If you want something a little more peaceful will require a bus ride or a car trip away from Kuhio beach. It also the space to learn how to surf so if you are looking to take surfing lessons, probably the place to go. With that said, you also have to watch out for surfers and wakeboarders, so if you have small ones, make sure you keep an eye so they don't become easy targets. Even with its crowded, the view is still spectacular and the water is great. If going into the ocean is your thing, I would select the portion near the Westin as the sand in the water is a lot finer. The farther you go down, the sand is pretty rough and has rocks which make it annoying if you like to stand around. Come before 6PM and see the most amazing sunsets! Once the sunsets, the beach is pretty much cleared out, great place to take romantic moonlight walks on the beach. Highly recommend! read more

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BEACH!! I know so many people love Kaimana down the way, but I think Kuhio is WORLDS beyond. Waikiki beaches ARE really beautiful, but way too crowded for my tastes. This beach, given that it's on the end near the Zoo, already eliminates some of the crowd. It's a good mix of tourist and locals and people just lounging, or catching some waves/jumping off the pier. Because there's a break, the water is really calm and it is crystal clear. It's perfect for general lounging, and I think it's much clearer and in some ways, not as crowded as Kaimana. There's lots of beach room for lounging and it's super fun to watch the teenagers jumping off the wall and others on their boogie boards, or others, farther out, catching some surf. Sigh. I do really love Ala Moana too, but this beach, for Waikiki, might take the cake for me. read more

So many beautiful beaches and parks in Hawaii! Kuhio beach is a nice place to walk around and enjoy the view of the ocean and city which is less than a mile away. There are a couple of benches along the walkway so you can relax, eat, catch up, and take in the scenery. Also the park has a couple of huge Indian Banyan trees which we marveled at for a good couple of minutes. We came here early around 9am so there wasn't that many people around yet. Seems like a perfect spot to have a picnic, tan, and just hang out. The waves are a little more calm here. Although, I don't think it's an ideal location to go swimming or snorkeling since there are a bunch of rocks and coral, but if you want to try...be careful! read more
