Visiting the "Cube Houses" is one of the touristy things to do in Rotterdam. We just took a couple photos of the exterior of Cube Houses and walked around the premise. It costs about 3 Euros if you want to go inside to see the little apartment rooms. You can get here via tram or train (Rotterdam Blaak Station). It's also very close to the "De Markthal" (food hall).

These iconic houses are a must see on a visit to Rotterdam! Actual homes to local citizens, one is unoccupied and open for tours. After an ascent up a fairly narrow staircase, you arrive in the living room, pay your admission, and start looking around. The seating in the living room is mid century modernesque...very linear and very simple. The kitchen is just steps away and while tiny, is modern, with a dishwasher, induction stove top, exhaust vent, and dining table. Up the nearby staircase, is the bedroom, with what appears to be a floating bed, an office space with desk, a bathroom, and another staircase leading to the cupola/attic space. As you can imagine, all the spaces are small....adequate for a single person or a couple. Because of the size, all of the major furniture is built in, with room for a few personal pieces besides decor. The windows are all on angles looking either down or up, which can really mess with your equilibrium, if you're prone to vertigo! Looking down into the courtyard, you could see the pavers were laid in a floral pattern, which was nice, versus seeing just gray concrete. Depending on where you are in the home, you might have city, courtyard, neighborhood, or street views, all offering different vibes of the area. The entire complex lies very nearby, almost next to Oudehaven (Old Port), a small harbor off the Nieuwe Maas river and has very walkable access to shops and restaurants. Definitely worth the stop, even if architecture is not your thing! 7/2020

Is it a happy Santa Claus holding a bell and a Christmas tree or is it a naughty Santa holding…read moresomething unmentionable?? Interesting to visit this Santa Claus by Paul McCarthy with our tour guide Nidas from Free Walking Tour Rotterdam. Had I just walked by this oversized Santa, might not have known how controversial this giant statue has been. Once the inspiration was revealed, the statue was rejected by many local businesses and it was moved from location to location. Read the other reviews to learn more about what Santa holds in his right hand. Maybe that's why he is smiling??

The Low Countries seems to house their fair share of interesting statues…read more.. The city of Rotterdam commissioned sculptor Paul McCarthy (not the Beatles member) to create a piece of public art for a square near the orchestra building. Created in 2001, the sculpture is supposed to depict Santa Claus holding a bell in one hand and a Christmas tree in the other. The locals, or rather, anyone with an imagination, thought otherwise. Reception was obviously mixed, with some finding it offensive while other people thought it symbolized Western consumerism around Christmastime gone wrong. It was eventually rejected from its original site due to the controversy and for several years moved about the city until it found a permanent place in the Eendrachtsplein. The statue was only a 15 minute walk from Rotterdam Centraal station so I visited the statue on my way back to the station. If the city can design a food hall with a mural of fruits in the ceiling and cube houses as residential spaces, surely it has room for one more unusual object?
