These iconic houses are a must see on a visit to Rotterdam! Actual homes to local citizens, one is unoccupied and open for tours.
After an ascent up a fairly narrow staircase, you arrive in the living room, pay your admission, and start looking around. The seating in the living room is mid century modernesque...very linear and very simple. The kitchen is just steps away and while tiny, is modern, with a dishwasher, induction stove top, exhaust vent, and dining table. Up the nearby staircase, is the bedroom, with what appears to be a floating bed, an office space with desk, a bathroom, and another staircase leading to the cupola/attic space.
As you can imagine, all the spaces are small....adequate for a single person or a couple. Because of the size, all of the major furniture is built in, with room for a few personal pieces besides decor. The windows are all on angles looking either down or up, which can really mess with your equilibrium, if you're prone to vertigo!
Looking down into the courtyard, you could see the pavers were laid in a floral pattern, which was nice, versus seeing just gray concrete. Depending on where you are in the home, you might have city, courtyard, neighborhood, or street views, all offering different vibes of the area.
The entire complex lies very nearby, almost next to Oudehaven (Old Port), a small harbor off the Nieuwe Maas river and has very walkable access to shops and restaurants.
Definitely worth the stop, even if architecture is not your thing!
