Hot Ground Gym - Blindfolds obstacles course with a buddy hand in hand

Hot Ground Gym

I found Hot Ground Gym when my three boys and I moved to the North Shore area during the pandemic…read more I initially signed up my kids because after having been in lockdown for so long, I just needed a place for them to run around and burn off some steam. I had no idea how HGG was going to become a big part of our lives. My kids quickly fell in love with the program, excited each week to tackle a new obstacle course and team-building mission. I watched them come out of their shell and grow into their self confidence. I watched the life lessons they learned in the gym be practiced in our home. The best example being how they learned the value and the benefit of working together versus against one another. With three alpha males, that is miraculous in and of itself. But beyond what my kids have gained at the HGG is what we gained as a family, being a part of the HGG community. Shortly after moving here, our life got hit hard with personal and professional changes and losses. As a newly single mom trying to reestablish herself in a new city with three young boys in tow, it has been a struggle to keep everything and everyone afloat. It has been so humbling how Doug, Sam, DJ, and Jeremy have all stepped up to support me and my kids without hesitation and without judgment, simply with the goal of supporting us during a challenging time, creating stability for my boys during a time of uncertainty. Yes my kids physically get a lot out of the program itself, but to experience first hand how this team practices what they preach to these kids, is beyond words. Their commitment to their students, to their families, and to their community speaks volumes about the quality service they are providing for our children. In a time when compassion and humanity is needed most in leadership, these guys and this program is the real deal.

We came to Hot Ground Gym for a free trial class for my son, courtesy of a friend whose son and…read morecousins also attend the classes. So my experience is limited to just one visit, but I was actually pretty impressed by what I saw. I can see how this could be a really good place for kids to build confidence, learn discipline, and get active at the same time. I got to meet Doug, who was running the class himself; I think he is the owner also. He was very hands-on with the kids and personable with all the families. I also really like that Hot Ground Gym was founded and is owned by military veterans and former first responders, and I could see how they're able to transfer these skills and help kids get active and learn discipline. One of the first things I noticed was that the kids really have to listen in order to follow the instructions. Doug has a very projecting voice, and you will hear him. At first, I could see how the loud and direct instructions might feel a little intimidating to a younger child, such as a 7-year-old or younger, but very quickly I noticed that the kids who had been coming for a while knew exactly what to do. The smaller or newer kids could watch them and follow along it's a good real-life example of observing, learning, and following the leader. At the end of the session, all the kids were called to get an ice pop to hydrate and cool down with, which was really a nice reward for all of their hard work. They also group the sessions by age, plus or minus a couple of years, and this has the advantage of having some variety so the kids can help one another out. There were real-time teamwork activities where the kids had to hold each other's hands, guide each other through while being blindfolded, and work together to get through different challenges. I was impressed by how quickly the kids learned the ropes and moved through things like climbing walls and the mini zip line. They could move at their own pace and surprisingly, there wasn't any bottlenecking. There are younger staff helping Doug and assisting the kids along the course, and everyone seemed very attentive to make sure kids were moving through the obstacles safely. I really like this concept of problem-solving and teamwork happening physically. You put your kids in here and they'd actually have to communicate, trust each other, observe what other kids are doing, and figure out how to get through the challenges together. Talk about real-life skills! There was also upbeat music playing during the class, and it seems to depend on the group and age which made the whole thing feel lively. I noticed flyers for no-school camps, laser tag nights, birthday parties, bring-a-buddy promotions, and other activities. They also have a badge system where kids can work toward different badges as they develop skills and demonstrate leadership. There are a lot of different things built into the program, and I was impressed by how much more there is to it than simply an obstacle course. I also like the flexibility of the program. Doug mentioned monthly enrollment as well as prepaid session passes, and there are different class schedules to choose from; he also sends out regular emails of activities happening. Overall, I could see the potential for kids to build confidence, teamwork, discipline, and problem-solving skills while getting a good workout. This review was not sponsored, nor was I asked to write it about it. I just think they have something special here so I want to spread the word for other families because I do think this is such a unique establishment for kids. I just wish they were closer to us! They currently have 2 Illinois locations in Arlington Heights and Libertyville, and I would love to see one open somewhere in the Schaumburg or western suburbs area someday. I think it could serve a lot of families in over here.

The highlight was definitely the bouncy house, adding an extra element of fun for the kids. The basketball court, table tennis, cornhole, and treehouse offered a variety of activities, ensuring that every child had something exciting to engage in. The staff was attentive and ensured the safety of the kids while they enjoyed the facilities. There is also a separate play area for babies. There is something for everyone for various age groups. Another nice amenity for a party room is the separate eating area for parents to relax and socialize while the party was in full swing. It created a comfortable space for adults to unwind, chat, and enjoy the festivities from a distance. Overall, the YMCA provided an excellent venue for a kids' birthday party, combining a diverse range of activities with a welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommended!

Updated review for 2026:…read more Signed back up to save some money because I do like using their indoor track in the winter. The maintenance staff seems really small still and the building looks completely unkempt, outdated, and dirty. It smells, machines are old and feel scuzzy in the workout rooms. The spare rooms for stretching are fine but the workout schedules seem mostly geared for old people. Cancelling our membership because it feels like things just get worse here, unfortunately. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2021 review: Disappointed post Covid quarantine. They are so understaffed abs there's no childcare help anymore. You must wear a mask to workout in the workout room and all the friendly staff I had formed relationships with are gone. I hope Buehler is able to recover and hire a bigger staff soon but until then I won't be returning.

Started out with Bonnie...great trainer who helps the students stay focused and serious during their lesson. Her patience with the younger riders is spot on. She's so supportive of her students and has taught our daughter a ton. The summer camps she leads are tons of fun and a great learning experience for the riders. As of lately our daughter has also been training with Carmine as well. She really is such a skilled trainer and her demeanor is so professional and focused and supportive. What I love about Carmine's approach is at the end of each lesson she spends 5 minutes talking with us about our daughters lesson...why she did well...and what can be worked on. You can tell Carmine takes great pride in teaching the riders. We absolutely love this place. Great horses and trainers with a strong focus on safety in a friendly family like environment for your equestrian to ride!!!!
