Bacon cheeseburger and fries.
Murray W.

A recently opened burger joint on SGR, Krave is nicely filling the downtown gap left by the exit of The Works. McDonald's can't be the Spring Garden burger place, it just can't. It's got a fast food-ish interior, but more modern and less corporate feeling. The bold red, white and black palate makes for an exportable brand, mind you. Bar seating close to the doors and those seats and tables by the walls have convenient USB plugs for your electronic device charging needs. Kudos. A large menu on the wall by the cash registers has several burgers, hot dogs and sides, as well as a list of items for a make-your-own burger. They also have a liquor license, so if you're not heading into work like I was, you can get some beer or boozey milkshakes with your meal. Which you probably should. I wanted to keep it simple to get a baseline of what their burgers were like and yet not completely over eat before my night shift, so I went with the bacon cheeseburger combo, but resisted the temptation of their sides other than the fries which came with my combo. Cup in hand, I was glad to see they had ginger ale on tap, a rarity at these sort of places. Minutes before the Parade of Lights, the place was bustling with hungry people and those here for the free hot chocolate. Luckily I was able to grab a small two-person table so that I had room for my work baggage, but wasn't putting out too many people from a seat. It was a little bit of a wait, perhaps seeming longer since I was by myself, but as soon as I was wondering what was up, I had my tray of burger and fries in front of me. Krave's food is presented simply in the old school fast food joint fashion, in open paper wrappers showing off a damn good looking burger. One of their house-ground patties topped with melted cheddar, a few slices of their shoulder bacon, and the usual vegetable suspects, it was a sight for hungry eyes. The first bite matched the taste with the looks; it was a very good burger. The beef had great flavour and a nice texture to it; not too loose and crumbly, but not such a fine grind and compressed that it's sausage-like. The shoulder bacon had a slightly different flavour than any belly bacon I've ever had, and it added a nice salty and smoky hit to each bite. The bun held it all together nicely without being so thick that it was a distraction or hard to chew through. Pretty much a perfectly executed burger. The fries weren't quite at the level of the burger unfortunately, although I feel like they easily could have been. Skin on, and probably double fried, mine were a bit cold and tough, suggesting that they were sitting around waiting for my burger to come off the grill. It was an exceptionally busy night for them, but consistency is a hallmark of the greats, or those aspiring to that level. The meal was the ideal size, filling my empty belly but not so much that I'd be wanting a nap right after I got to work. Service was friendly throughout, and smiling faces were checking in on everyone to see how meals were coming along; a nice touch. Krave is putting out a great product, in a clean, crisp environment with some nice amenities, and I look forward to returning in the future for some more food and a boozey milkshake.

Krave was good but not great. The atmosphere is good. You order your food and they bring it to your table. I had the krave burger with fries and drink. Came to $12. They messed up my order. They asked me if I wanted everything on it, I said yes but when they brought my burger it had no pickles. The fries were delicious. I'll likely grab food elsewhere next time.

We went here during Burger Week and I was reminded how much I enjoy Krave. I love the gourmet burger trend - I'd be very okay if it stuck around for a while. Krave's menu is extensive, with not only burgers, but chicken, veggie options, salads...and of course milkshakes. It isn't really a burger joint without milkshakes am I right? If you're looking for a little fried goodness, I have to suggest their onion rings. Some of the best I've had in Halifax! They don't crumble apart when you pick them up and that crunch is so darn satisfying. Their Burger Week burger was the bacon jam burger which was ahhhhhhmazing. I hope they bring it back next year - or better yet, make it a permanent addition to their menu! It's the perfect mix of sweet and savoury, with just enough bacony goodness that I felt satisfied. I've also had the Krave Burger in the past, which is a perfect standard burger. Their burgers are never over cooked or dry, their buns are always toasted to perfection...Krave is such a great fast food burger joint. It's the perfect addition to Spring Garden! Oh, and they have oodles of chargers available for you to borrow if you need as well, which is fab!

Krave Burger is a cute little burger joint down town. It's a modern day diner with a twist! There's a plugged in area to charge your laptops, phones etc and many red and white seating. They also have glass bottles and are licensed. The menu itself is humongous and it's surprising how delicious everything is! My personal favourite is the Krave Burger because it's simple. Krave sauce is delicious. Their sweet potatoes fries are stringy and they do not skimp on their fries! Also their siracha lime sauce is out of this world! The customer service is always amazing and many of the staff have been there for awhile which makes it comforting to see a friendly face ( even though I've only been in a handful of times). I'd definitely recommend this for any foodie looking for a great place that specialized in burgers. I'll be back eventually - yum!

Super service ! Great space and burgers galore. Sooo yummm I had the crave burger with cheese but there are a lot of burgers to choose from.

Krave, back at it again with the killer food/service. This was the only place that I went to (six all together) that accommodated my 'lettuce for a bun' request without batting an eye. Most places that I asked for that said they couldn't do it (which didn't make any sense to me, but I didn't bother making a stink of it). I just didn't eat the bun. Even that aside though - the staff that work there are always so unbelievably friendly and attentive. I love going in there just for that. But the great tasting food always helps. Every time I've gone in there there's a line up out the door - which clearly shows that whatever they're doing, is working. Keep it up.

Krave Burger Combo

We visited Krave Burger on a Saturday evening and the service was relatively quick and efficient. Customers have to first pay at the counter before getting a number, finding a seat, and waiting for their food to be served. I ordered the Krave Burger combo which came with a drink and fries and my partner ordered the Krave Dog with extra bacon. The Krave Burger came with a beef patty, lettuce, tomato, and pickles and although all the ingredients combined to make a really tasty burger, it was just way too greasy. I had grease dripping out of the bag as I took my first bite. The sausage in the crave dog was very juicy, but if it wasn't for the extra bacon we ordered, it wouldn't have come with any toppings. The fries on the other hand were golden and crispy and just right. We would come back once in a while as it's in a convenient location and the price is fair.

You want honest food? Good food? You're tired of the 'attitude' you get at the Shoe Shop? This is the place!!! Great food, good service, simple concept and on top of it, you can actually have a conversation since the noise level is minimal an the ambiance is realaxed, airy. Go!

Good quality food at great prices. Anything with chicken in it is a bit overpriced for how much you get, though.

McJolly Filipino Fast Food - Combo Meal #3 - fried chicken with rice, corn and gravy

McJolly Filipino Fast Food

Filipino food is probably my favourite international cuisine, with its delicious mix of Asian and…read moreSpanish flavours, and while their fast food is much more American-ized than their more traditional stuff, it's its own little niche that deserves some love too! McJolly was started by Filipino immigrants who became restauranteurs in Halifax and takes its name from two of the most popular fast food chains in the Philippines. No guesses are needed for the prefix, but the second part may be less familiar for Maritimers - Jollibee. They're only just starting to expand in Canada, with about 30 locations across the country, and are known for their assorted menu of fried chicken, burgers, and Filipino-style spaghetti. The menu at McJolly is much the same, and I had the fried chicken section in my sights. I went for Comb Meal #3 - fried chicken, rice and your choice of coleslaw or corn (I chose the latter). I thought I was getting a lighter meal than some of the combos that have both rice and spaghetti, but when my tray was in front of me, the *four* pieces of chicken (two drumsticks and two thighs, go Team Dark Meat!) said otherwise! Hilariously, I was in a bit of a rush to get to a job interview, so I had to inhale this meal and couldn't quite give it the attention it deserved, but there were really only four different items - the chicken, steamed rice, corn and gravy. I won't play coy and leave it until the end of the review - the chicken was awesome! The coating was super crisp, and the meat within was moist and tender. I do wish Filipino fried chicken had more seasoning to it, but hey, well executed fried chicken is still a wonderful thing! The gravy had a pleasant peppery kick to it, and I slathered it over both the chicken and the rice. The small cup of corn was a bit of an afterthought, and I probably should have gone with the coleslaw on the off chance that it would be a vinegar-based dressing to have something to cut through the rich chicken, but it's likely mayo-based anyway. I love that Filipino food has really been blowing up in Halifax the past few years, and I'll definitely be doing a deep dive into it all, including a return visit to McJolly for the spaghetti next time!

It's very reminiscent of the food courts in complexes connected by The PATH in Toronto (eg the Richmond-Adelaide Centre, TD Place, Commerce Court, etc.). I like that there are several independent vendors, and there are some chains that are specific to Atlantic Canada (which are cool to me because I'm from Ontario). There are of course also big national and international chains, but I didn't travel to Halifax to eat stuff that I can eat in Ottawa, right? However, if you live in Halifax and want an A&W burger or a Iced Capp from Tim Hortons, they have those at The Mix too. So some of their newest offerings are Katch and Pizza Girls (they are together), Tin Pan Alley Gourmet Fries, and Sushi Tonari. The older vendors include A Taste of India, A&W, Booster Juice, Freshii (which is newish), Korea Garden, Mama Gratti's, Mezza Lebanese Kitchen, Starbucks, Subway, Thai Express, and Tim Hortons. There is a lot of seating and the food court is bright, clean, and spacious. I'm a fan.

Baked goods are definitely "my thing" and I was curious to settle upon, for once and for all, which spot has the best cookie! The contenders: Starbucks, Second Cup, and Treats. These are the main places one may venture for a treat, and I didn't bother with Tim Horton's because the lines are always too long. I purchased one cookie from each store, and noted the selection available as well. Sitting down at a table in the mall, I laid all three cookies out in front of me and sampled each with a bite. The results? Starbucks! Best cookie, hands down. I purchased the white chocolate & maccadamian nut, which was soft and chewy just how I like it. Although Starbucks tends to run low on cookies fairly often, so that can be a drag. Second Cup comes in second, with a tasty chocolate chip, and Treats comes in last place because of the overly crisp (bordering burnt) taste. So there you have it folks. If you're looking for the best fix for a Scotia Square cookie, I'd recommend Starbucks.

The portions were on the small side and I hardly got any vegetables or potatoes :( The taste was ok though, but not as fantastic as I had hoped. I got the Seoul Chicken, regular sized plate ($7.15). I got white rice instead of fried rice. The plate came with the teeniest portion of vegetables (cabbage, carrots and celery) and about 7 tiny cubes of potatoes. The portion of chicken was ok, but by no means generous. The amount of rice was in proportion to the meat, I didn't have much rice leftover, so at least the plate wasn't filled with rice. The chicken itself tasted good. It was fried chicken pieces, mostly dark meat, but it wasn't too fatty or gristley at least. The sauce was sweet and savoury. It was not spicy. The potatoes were a bit boring without too much flavour to them. I liked the lightly pickled vegetables. They were still somewhat crunchy. I would have liked some more though. Service was very courteous and efficient. Korea Garden is in the Scotia Square food court, which is branded "The Mix." There's lots of seating. I'm glad that I tried it, but I certainly am not hooked on it, like I've read other reviewers (both on Yelp and other platforms) are, lol. I guess it's all for the best since I'm from out of town anyway.

It seems that the Seoul Chicken (which looked awesome) is the all time favorite. I personally went with the Spicy Shrimp served with fried rice that is fantastic. The 7 shrimp where huge, the rice very flavorful and not the least bit greasy. The plate came with roasted potatoes and marinated cabbage and carrots (not kimchi, but they do serve that). I added a gyoza dumpling and it still was less than $7. The staff are very friendly and you know this place is one people come back to again and again...the server handed the guy behind me a Pepsi before he even got the words out. He's obviously a regular...smart man. I'm tempted to go back tomorrow.
