Passed through on my way to work. Got me a bacon, egg and cheese on a seeded pumpernickel bagel action. Thought the bagel was good,eggs were soft, bacon was crispy and sammy stayed warm all the way to work. I do think the bacon was a bit too salty for me which is a first. Been going to Kossar's since I was a kid and my grandparents lived in the neighborhood. It was their local bialy (what they're known for) and bagel place and turns out may be the Old School mothership of bialys in the U.S. This was way before there were sweet bagels, bialys other than onion, and the walls were only painted some off-white color. Didn't remember a place to sit and eat because we took them home. That being said, even with now fancy tiled walls inside and wider selection (at much higher prices) including sandwiches and babkas including (rainbow, ugh) bagels, love to grab my favorite sandwich there when nearby - whitefish salad on the traditional onion bialy! Appears they don't have onion boards every day, but ask for them! (Onion board is a classic item to enjoy at home.) Trust me - don't toast your bagel here! This is my new favorite bagel in NYC. I had the Kossar's Classic the other day and for the first time I didn't toast my bagel. Game changing. A longstanding joint on the LES. I grew up walking by this shop. Have always loved the bialys from here. Recently I came in for Too Good To Go pickup. The staff grabbed a bag and served me up many bagels and two bialys, a laffa loaf and several muffins. I was suprised it all came from the fresh baskets. The counter staff guy was so generous and said, of course, we give you the best! I've always come here for the bialy and have never been disappointed. This places used to be cheaper but it can be pretty pricey. The menu is pretty good just on the pricey side. I always end up getting break and Bialy's. By themselves they don't cost much but as a sandwich it can definitely cost more. Each biaky costs about $1.50. "When in Rome..." When in NY... find a bagel! Finding a New York bagel had been pretty high on the to-do list for my boyfriend while we were visiting. After finding some morning coffee at Café Grumpy on the Lower East Side, we came across Kossar's on Google to grab a bagel. I ordered an everything bagel with cream cheese. My bf got a Turkey, Egg & Cheese bagel. Now, let me be clear... I LOVE everything bagels. They are one of my favorite things for breakfast. Kossar's everything was pretty good... sadly the everything seasoning was SO salty. I love salt too. I had the most difficult time finishing my bagel because the salt was just too much. And I felt like the cream cheese was quite thick too. It was good but I would probably scrape some of the seasoning off next time. The Turkey, Egg & Cheese bagel was special. We'd walked a little ways away from Kossar's to find a place to sit and eat. When my bf opened the wrapping paper, the sandwich was still piping hot and steamy! My by ate the whole thing! Overall, Kossar's was pretty good. Considering there are so many bagels places, I'm not 100% sure I would go back rather than check out a new place, but it wasn't bad by any means. 7.5/10 recommend read more

I used to come here on a weekly basis as a kid and the bialy's were great. We would buy a baker's dozen and freeze them and return for more when we ran out. Some time in the aughts I stopped in and the bialys and experience were so bad I never returned.... until recently. I love bialys and they are becoming very hard to find, much less a good one. Kossar's bialy of today in no way matches the bialy's they made during my childhood, but they do at least resemble a proper bialy. I bought two with cream cheese and was charged $10 and change. I'm sort of surprised by the low reviews! I thought Kossar's was a great spot, both for regular bagels as well as the bialys. It was my first time trying one, and I was surprised at how yummy and moist (I can't think of any other word hahaha) they are. Even though they're thin, they hold up well in an egg sandwich and are a fun switch up to a bagel! The staff is great too - super helpful and friendly. Had to show some love for Kossars, and give it the "Best Recent Bagel" award, as one of the new est places I've tried a new bagel from, and they did not disappoint. When you walk in you can see the folks in the back making the bagels super fresh, out of the oven, and they are popping them out all day, not just the 5am batch stuff. Also, the menu, so many different pre organized meals you can get many good things. Also the fishes, Whitefish, Salmon, Belly Lox, Pastrami Lox, all of em. They got it. Reminiscent of the bagelries of the 1930's and 1940's, when the Lower East Side was inhabited by Eastern European Jews, Kossar's is a snapshot of that time period. The bagels taste like a New York bagel should. A good New York bagel is traditionally crunchy and hard on the outside, but chewy on the inside. It is filled nicely with whatever you would like in it. I got mine filled with my staple lox and cream cheese. Both taste fresh, and the unique texture of the bagel helps accompany in the best this traditional sandwich can provide. As for the bialy, for $1.35, you get what you pay for. They are small and hard, with some flavor but nothing too crazy. I think you have to buy a lot to get the true bialy experience. The muffins are deceiving. They are moist, but will sit like a pit in your stomach. Stay away from these. But the bagels are definitely worth buying and trying. I ordered food from here and waited two hours for it before I had to cancel. I originally ordered at 1:20 pm. At around 2:10 pm I called them, and they said they were still waiting for the courier and that I should call Grubhub for a refund. Btw they apparently deliver their own food according to my delivery app. I called again in 30 minutes and then their story was that a courier picked it up and then brought it back. These bagels were fresh which is always a plus, my Essex Street Sandwich with Pastrami Smoked Salmon, Chive Cream Cheese, Avocado, and Dill was a good combination to be had, if there was more to it. The middle layer was light on substance, especially the chive cream cheese and pastrami. North of $15 for this sandwich I did expect more in return.
