We do not have many independent bookstores around anymore so to find this literally sparked joy! Glad husband and I had a chance to wander through this wonderland of books. There are a lot to dig, for sure. We spent a good hour there, most of it conversing with the owner, Thomas. He is really nice and knows his books for sure! It was super cool getting to know him in such a short period of time. Anyway, I guarantee that you will walk out with a book in hand! I found a couple books...this should keep me busy for a little bit, lol. Husband, of course found a few too, for his library. Every time I mention "let's go the bookstore", husband would always frown because we have so many books! I would respond, "would you rather me shop for another handbag?" LOL. Yea...I didn't think so. Reading is fundamental. Keep on reading and exploring and discovering new stories and adventures in a book near you. Come and support this local bookstore and keep it alive. The book selection is incredible, but the opportunities to join a community are what really make this place deserve 5 stars. Not only do they have two stories of books to browse, but they also host tons of events weekly. I've had the opportunity to attend some of their kid-themed events with my son, as well as some of their larger adult events where we get to meet authors. They also have multiple book clubs that meet at the store. In addition to books, they have a great gift-giving section with Lego, puzzles, stationery, board games, and more. The book sellers are also great; they love to talk about books and provide recommendations. It's a level of customer service I wholeheartedly appreciate. My only negative criticism is that this location does not have a cafe, and the greeting cards are overpriced (most are like $6).

It's one of the newer (and more organized) locations of the Japanese used bookstore, and carries a large variety: from left to right when you walk in figurines, video games, films, books, cassettes, and vinyls. Make sure to come back frequently as the inventory regularly changes! I've picked up fiction, jazz records, and even some wishlist flicks for my dad. While I do think Bookoff in general recently raised their prices (e.g. Blu-rays averaged $5 but are now $7 apiece) thanks to market conditions, you can still find some great deals like $3 clearance movies, $2 books, and $1 vinyls. Associates always greet you when you enter :) I haven't traded in my books or movies since I always tend to walk out with more than I came in with - but they'd be happy to answer any questions there, too. Parking is easy; Bookoff is in the corner of a strip mall with plenty of diagonal spaces.

Sure, the parking can be hectic sometimes. After all, there is a Tokyo Central right next to it, but that's what makes this location so good. You can spend hours perusing the aisles for some good finds but can take a break and get some Pocky or a bento or a Fanta nearby without ever breaking theme. What's even better is it feels like the employees enjoy working here. They greet you warmly when you walk in and that hospitality Japan is known for is reflected in this staff, even if they aren't Japanese and this isn't Japan; the spirit still carries. So does the nostalgia walking through the aisles. If you played video games throughout the 90s to now you'll see pieces of your childhood everywhere you look: a Super Famicom with Chrono Trigger for sale or a Vegeta action figure going Super Saiyan or the many mangas of Rumiko Takahashi such as Ranma 1/2 or Inuyasha. In encapsulates otaku culture through the ages well. Even looking for books of different genres and authors can be found, some new but most used. It doesn't mean they aren't good. It just means they're pre-loved. This means you can get a bargain for some books you might have been meaning to check out for a great price. They also have book sales all the time. If you feel a need to lighten your collection at home, whether it be action figure or games you no longer play, Bookoff buys them from you. It means your cash could go even further if you have things to sell. Though the size of Bookoffs in America does have me wishing they were larger like their Japanese counterparts they do pack quite a lot for the space they occupy. You can spend 15 minutes to multiple hours here, depending on what you're looking for. I say that means it's worth checking out. After all, the worst that can happen is if you don't find anything to tickle your fancy you can always go to Tokyo Central or IKEA right after.

There are some…read moregenuinely great finds--plenty of $1 items, solid deals on DVDs, and every once in a while something really special slips through the cracks. That said, the pricing is all over the place. It's obvious they rely heavily on some kind of algorithm to assign value, and when it works in your favor, it really works. I've picked up items worth hundreds of dollars for a few bucks. But the flip side is rough--things priced at $100 that you could easily find for $10-15 elsewhere. That inconsistency is both the magic and the frustration. Selling to them is another story. They'll give you next to nothing unless it's something truly high-end, and even then, you're usually better off selling elsewhere. The margins are so far off at times that it really makes you wonder who's willing to take those deals. They do require ID and seem to follow the rules, but the reality is this kind of setup attracts people who either don't know what they have, don't care, are impatient, or are desperate. And yes, it also likely attracts people unloading stolen goods because they know the items are valuable, even if the payout is low. The store itself is very DIY. Nothing is cataloged, staff can't really help you with inventory, and what you see is what's available. Customer service is minimal--they're mostly focused on sorting and loss prevention. There's also an awkward dynamic between management and floor staff that you can feel when you're in there. At the end of the day, this place is a gamble. Sometimes you walk out feeling like you scored big. Other times you find something rare and exciting that's priced so high it might as well be untouchable. It almost screams desperation and lack of knowledge on the selling side--but ironically, that's exactly what brings in so much good stuff. If you know what you're doing and have patience, this place can be incredible. If not, it'll just feel chaotic.

She did answer that they had sold out, but then proceeded to just act like I didn't exist. Not sure, why I would need to have to be flirty just to buy an item they have behind the register. I genuinely just wanted to look at the One Piece Deck set that was behind the worker with the Comb Over. Who also proceeded to act like I didn't exist. Immense selection of books greeting cards, gifts, fiction, nonfiction everything is arranged and organized accordingly. I just love this bookstore. Great big parking lot that is free but it is shared among many businesses at the Long Beach town center. Great experience each time. Prices are fair (compared to Amazon?) at least you can actually pick up a book. Read it at the café and if you decide to buy it go for it if not, then just return it.

They also have this... $40 Yearly Barnes and Nobles Subscription that knocks off 10% (20% at rare occasions within the year) for every purchase as well as a free cafe drink upgrade if the bookstore has a cafe (NOT A STARBUCKS, THEY WILL NOT ACCEPT STATBUCKS GIFT CARDS), and a free annual tote bag (you cannot double dip for a second bag until you renew it). Unless you're planning on spending $400+ for the next 12 months or you're a regular cafe go'er, I wouldn't say this is for you. The seating for the cafe is fine, but can fill up real easily with most customers that intend to stay more than an hour.
