    Koko's Combination Dinner
    Samuel A.

If you're looking for a Greek spot to scratch that mediterranean itch, look no further than Koko's. This is another spot I seem to have walked or ran by 100s of times and finally tried it. Combination dinner was fantastic, huge portion size, and very filling. Mine came with Gyro, chicken kabobs, falafel, rice, vegetables, pita bread, and a side salad to boot. Everything was cooked well and had tons of flavor. The salad came with dressing as well as Taziki sauce. I can't speak to service as I only ordered delivery. The food was fantastic. Please give Koko's a try!

KoKos has an extensive menu and is affordable for the price but the food fell flat for me. I ordered the lemon rice soup and a side of chicken shawarma. My soup had hardly any chicken or rice and could hardly taste lemon. Not to mention it had a small chicken bone in it. Then I opened my shawarma to find a staple in it... thank god it was on top so I saw it right away. I removed it and tried the chicken... not shawarma style at all. It was fatty and so heavily sauced with a random sauce that was not very good. Normally shawarma is like dry roasted. Wouldn't order either again. I understand a bone or even a staple or something falling in the bag but into the food container?? I saw it right away so not sure how staff missed it. Either way, all put together... sorry but a very bad experience.

Was really craving gyro one evening and decided to try takeout from Koko's since I was nearby. The food was ready so quick and was a great value for the price as the portion was enough for 2 meals! I will definitely order from here again when I'm craving Mediterranean. Their menu is a mix of a lot of items as they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I look forward to trying more in the future!

The service is quick and the food is amazing! Very fresh and flavorful. The uber driver was even telling us how he comes here with family sometimes because it's so good! So glad we tried something new while on layover in the Windy City.

I got the Koko's Combo Plate - gyros, pork kebab, shawarma It's a very reasonable amount of food for $15 and all tasty too! No complaints about any of the plate's components. Nothing was dry or bland. Employees were helpful and nice. I liked the decent amount of seating and cleanliness of the restaurant.

Came to this place on a whim and was surprised it wasn't bad. It seemed like another dime a dozen Mediterranean places. Koko's is actually one of the better restaurants in the Ukrainian Village area for sure. Has the favorites. There's falafel of course, coming on a plate or in a wrap. As we just needed something fast, we decided on getting something with falafel. It's was obvious. That's the best Mediterranean thing for vegetarians. Easy part. Question was would it be a plate or a wrap. We turned out to get wraps. It's about $9 for a pretty big one. These come with hummus, and a choice of tahini or tzatziki. I got it with tahini, which kind of got lost in everything else. There was a lot on it, and it was all good. For sure I could get something from here again. It's as good Mediterranean food as anywhere around here so it would be a place to get that, and maybe a plate the next time. There's good stuff like the falafel and more for vegetarians.

Reminded me of the coney islands back home in Michigan! Great gyro and yogurt sauce is fresh. It's a very unassuming place not fancy at all on the inside. The servers speak Spanish and English so that is a plus. I went for breakfast but I I heard the burger is also really good! Looking forward to trying more.

    Falafel Salad

Oh how I love social media interaction with the Yelp Twitter page which tweeted: "Reply with a hand and we'll tell you what you should eat tonight". In response to my hand, the page replied with 'Falafel' which led me to searching for it within a radius of me. Out of what I found during my search, I loved Koko's Mediterranean Grille because it was located within Ukranian Village rather than Wicker Park. At the time, I had no interest in ordering anywhere in Wicker Park, especially along Milwaukee Ave! Even though I would have loved something on the lines of rice pilaf w/ falafel, I ended up ordering a Falafel Salad: 4 pieces of falafel with fresh mixed greens, green peppers, red onions, tomatoes, cucumbers and choice of dressing. A salad topped with dressing just felt like the perfect combination with falafel for me. I had no issues getting to the restaurant nor with parking! Outside of the restaurant, there is metered parking within the immediate area as well as neighborhood parking if you cannot get one of those metered spots. Since I visited for takeout, I parked and just turned on my vehicle's hazard lights then went inside to pick up my order. As expected, my order was just about completed as soon as I arrived. While waiting, I had the chance to look around at this fast casual style of an ambiance that has an alarming number of menu options including breakfast options! My pickup took no more than five minutes after verifying my name and order. As for the Falafel Salad, I enjoyed every bit of it; Its appearance was presentable, fresh, and its taste was definitely satisfying even without the french dressing I ordered but never received! Ok, Koko's Mediterranean Grille, I won't hold that against you because all and all I was satisfied. My initial response after my first bite was, "Mmm, not bad!". If you don't know how the rest of the scenario goes with good eats, then you might not be a foodie. All in all, I had a pleasant ordering experience with Koko's Mediterranean Grille. And as I indicated in this review, I enjoyed my meal and would surely order from again. Thank you, Yelp for the falafel recommendation via Twitter. For my readers, I will leave you with this falafel joke since I likely lost half of you with my review. What did the chickpea say when it got a stomach ache? "I falafel!" Hahaha, get it? I feel awful. ~Blessings~ Thomas G

Small spot you could casually pick up food and walk to if you're around downtown. Lots of cheese and sauce with a beautiful baguette to remind you that this place makes pizza too. Dough, cheese, and sauce are what this place really excels in. It's no surprise that they do it well across the board. Out of the sandwiches I tried, the gardinera pairs the best with the Drunken Chicken sandwich. I'm unsure if my hunger pangs were amplifying my experience, but this sandwich was something of legends... The ingredients combo into something a little too unfair to not be distributed to the rest of America. The food really feels special when you have it late night after a really long day of fun. The people are casual and nice and didn't make it awkward to eat there even though the place itself is quite small. Considering cops came in to order here out of all the places around, I can see how anyone could make this their staple spot.

It is shareable and hearty. The bread is so good. It's crusty and soft on the inside. It allows the right amount of sauce to soak in without being a giant mess. I don't consider it a save half and eat later sandwich though. In my experience it loses a bit of structure if not eaten right away. I have had the turkey, tuna, and meatball sandwich as well. All good and able to split into 2 meals and they save well. As mentioned, this spot is on repeat for me and haven't disliked anything. The pizza is ok but I wouldn't choose it as my pizza spot. There are better but if you are in a pinch a single slice option is nice. I enjoy the little Tiramisu cup. Perfect size. If you normally scroll by and wonder if you should try Nonna's go ahead. It's a good option.

I walked in and the incredible smell hit me, all the meats and bread on display, everything looks fresh. The crew behind the counter was top notch, super friendly and on it. Menu has a lot, but for my first time I went with the Italian. Hot capicola, Genoa salami, hard salami, mortadella, provolone, lettuce, tomato, red wine vinegar, oregano. First bite... everything just came together. The meats were layered perfectly, salty, a little spicy from the capicola, super flavorful. The provolone added that creamy, slightly sharp bite. Bread had a nice chew on the outside but soft inside, held everything without falling apart. The vinegar and oregano gave it that tang and freshness that cuts through all the richness. We were fortunate enough to be having dinner at an Italian restaurant in the same block, and I saw that they were open until midnight. I decided to grab a grinder and a couple of cannoli after dinner to consume the next day for lunch. They utilize a walk-up window for their later hours. I believe I mentioned during ordering that we "do not get grinders like this in Cali" and they were kind enough to let us indoors (surely knowing this weather was nearly "Antarctic penguin cold" for us) while our order was being finished. I saw various jars of giardiniera and muffuletta and could not resist buying a couple. Our store associate kindly wrapped them well in plastic wrap to ensure safe travel back to Cali. Our sandwich maker was a cool guy as well and conversational with us. They even gave us some brief family history on the place. Unfortunately, without my knowledge the wife set us up with an Uber while waiting so we had to dash and run to make our next stop before their closing time. "Foodies are as foodies do"... The FOOD review: CANNOLI w/cherries: -- it appears they use Amarena Bologna cherries which are so much better tasting than the standard maraschino bright red ones. I prefer morello cherries or these when using them in cannoli pie or on Chicago style or ricotta cheesecake. -- cheese tastes of cow's milk ricotta and is well strained so not watery -- lightly sweet is appreciated as it should be...no fake Italian sugar bomb with chocolate sauce and whipped cream like they do in Cali sometimes -- smaller portion size but value is good -- smoother textured than grainy -- shell is light colored and pretty solid -- up to a moderate dusting of powdered sugar on exterior -- appears freshly filled as there is no soggy shell syndrome whatsoever, crunchy and firm (I ate one two days later and it still had a firm shell) -- I have about 8 different cannoli pie recipes I created and make for friends, family and colleagues now and then. I transitioned to pie ages ago because there are so many bad shells and a graham cracker crust is always legit and easy to find. -- IMHO this is a much better and truer cannoli rendition than what you will find at D'Amato's Bakery in Chicago RATING = A "MR. G SPECIALTY GRINDER": -- I briefly considered "The Italian" or asking for a combo of the two but this stood out so I stuck with it -- I requested it "wet" as I hate anything dry (bread, meat etc.) and prefer extra "juice" (red wine vinegar, EVO) -- bread is not thick nor thin but just right with great texture, taste and freshness -- loved all the flavors and additions -- not a moose overloaded grinder but just right for those out of their twenties who do not need "sandie leftovers for days" -- good value here too RATING = A+ They even sell some appealing looking BLOOD ORANGE (and other flavors) sorbet. I definitely recommend them for a super hospitable Italiano experience with great eats. They even made the "Top Sandwich joints" in America list by Food & Wine magazine per associate and a quick Internet search.
