We were visitors from the US who planned our whole holiday around it, and will never forget it. Our guide was top notch, highly skilled with horse care and communication, and focused on both horse happiness and guest safety. I am a veterinarian and horse owner, and my observation is these horses are extremely well cared for and love their jobs. Each morning, they are ready to get on the road. Overnight accommodations were at lovely small inns. Guests help care for their horse and can expect up to 8 hours in the saddle each day. And every hour was something new and amazing to see. Recommended for confident riders who can handle rough terrain and have excellent balance in the saddle. I am 50+ and rode with my 18 year old daughter and it was an amazing ride for both of us. The owners work their tails off to make this happen, and I am so appreciative of them.

And they take on riders very responsibly, matching them with horses that are best for their skill level, and making sure the ride is safe and enjoyable. The ride is beautiful, through the forest and to the beach and back. But they have a variety of different types of riding on offer, everything from a 1-2 hour trail ride to working holidays. But really. The people are lovely. The horses are really lovely and well taken care of. You won't regret your experience.

You get to see some Highland Cattle (aka fluffy cows) on the drive in. There was plenty of parking at at the top. The hike to the top viewing point is short and not too steep, but I'd still make sure to have good shoes, and be careful if you have limited mobility at all. The stairs and trails are very well-maintained, but still a bit uneven, and there isn't always a railing. The hike to the lower viewing point was steeper, but well worth the effort. The trails past this viewing point are quite pretty as well, and lead to great views of a river leading into the Loch. We ended up turning around after a bit because we were short on time, but there's a longer loop you can do that is likely gorgeous. Keep an eye out for red squirrels, as well as plaques with poetry and explanation about the falls. Don't rush when you're driving through the Highlands; definitely take the time to follow signs pointing vaguely to a waterfall so you get to see incredible views like these.

The walk to half way is modest and very manageable for most. But, try and avoid the holiday makers we ran into. They were rude and blocked the narrow and slippery path. Phooey to them.

They switched out road tires for trek tires based on the trip I was taking, lights, high vis, and helmet with no extra charge, I hired high quality panniers that fit all my gear, and the bicycle was in perfect condition. The team is friendly, took time to understand my needs and genuinely seemed to thoroughly love and intimately know the details of cycling in the highlands. Even if you have a nice touring bike, the faff of bike train reservations makes renting in Inverness here a really good option. My daily hybrid commuter cycle was not going to cut it for my trip so I rented but I watched friends from London struggle on every leg of their train journey to get their touring bikes to their destinations, while I dropped this rental off and was back on my merry way. Hearing that they do a bicycle taxi service when I returned the bike opened up new route possibilities outside of the train routes as well. Can't recommend highly enough.

The pictures looked great…read morefrom what we saw online but little did we know it took taking a twisty one-lane road up the mountain and having to do some tricky maneuvering when people were coming the opposite way. The landscape was formed by landslides which left a lot of rock spires intact, some of the formations have foreboding names like "The Prison" and "The Needle". I'm not normally one for views with no "payoff" but I loved what we saw up here, its so spacious and grand, people look tiny and it makes you appreciate the planet more. I especially enjoyed the weather the day we went, very rare to have nice blue skies in this area. You can go for a hike on the left side and get closer to the rocks, on the left is a small hill where you can see a lot of the Horizon and catch some of the sky reflected in the bodies of water.

It is, quite possibly, the most beautiful landscape I've ever seen. It dang near brought to my knees with tears in my eyes, and I'm not joking. The funny thing is - we didn't really plan out our journey the way we should have. Our plan was to just drive around the exterior of the Isle of Skye. Mistake! Make sure you take the road that cuts right through the middle of the Northern section of the island and plan a couple/few hours so that you can see the nightmare of nature. The drive through the middle of the island isn't the friendliest. The road is narrow, there are multiple potholes, and people in RVs aren't the kindest when passing them. Still worth it. I'd go back tomorrow and spend weeks here if I could. Wear appropriate clothing, anticipating all weather.

Mealt Falls - Basalt columns form Kilt Rock

Because of the constant rain you can always see this small waterfall going directly into the ocean from the cliffs. You get the balsat columns forming the pleats of kilt rock in the background and this waterfall in the front. Kilt Rock is very similar to devils tower though there are wilder and more extreme basalt columns in other places on this planet. Unfortunately, what most pictures don't show is there is a fence blocking off most of the cliff and the pictures I took and the ones posted here is about the only angle you can safely get. I'm not sure if there are boat rides but that would be the only other way to see this from a different perspective. The whole fence is lined with people so you may have to wait for the best angle. What we thought would be a longer exploration ended up a pretty short stop.

The water falls over a grassy cliff into the rocks/water below. When I visited on Sunday 14 July 2019, the parking was pretty packed, but the viewing area had fairly good turnover, so waiting was not too long. Fortunately, I got here in a calmer pulse of activity, when I left there were a number of vehicles circling. Near the viewpoint area there was a bagpiper playing music, which I quite enjoyed. I could still hear other people around me talking, but as a solo traveler I decided to think of the music as my audial companion. The falls itself is straightforward to spot and even in July had good water flow. Various seabirds flew past. Making my way back to the car, I decided to take a path through a grassy area and discovered what I might best describe as a urination station - toilet paper swabs everywhere in one corner. Tiny mounds of poop speckled in the grass. Flies buzzing in the yellow liquid in the grass... However, as the Mealt Falls viewing area was located atop sea cliffs, the wind carried most of the smell away. The area served as a reminder that there was no restroom at the falls.
