She was fascinating as she thoroughly described any piece we happened to notice. It was obvious that service here is wonderful as Karen is extremely knowledgeable of her stock. I found a lobster canvas (on the larger side) and I knew that this canvas was what I wanted to start with even though it wasn't meant for beginners. The ladies helped me pick out all the yarns needed and talked to me about the difference in materials and what goes well with what. I needed to learn how to do the basic stitches and even though my son let living their pencil jar around the store, everyone was so sweet and they took the time to teach me different options to start and finish and of course mastering the continental. The options were so cute and I am so grateful to not only the ladies working there, but all the women stitching in the back area who showed me their designs and were very encouraging. While needlepoint is an expensive hobby, they talked to me about prices and were really transparent. It didn't take long for me to find other needlepoint shops closer to home and I honestly think the level or service and options provided at other stores around Boston have not compared to the ladies at Needlepoint by the Bay.

After a multitude of rude experiences I have finally had enough and decided to write a review…read more My first time visiting I bought some yarn and upon checkout I made a comment about how I did not know what I was going to do with it but that I loved the color and had to buy it. A lady who headed into the back room said as she was passing "Yeah I know all knitters are hoarders".....makes you want to buy yarn right? no. so my next visit was with my husband and then newborn. My husband was pretty disgusted by the group of women who sat knitting talking about how hot some police officer in Little Compton was. I guess gossiping woman meet here. my next visit I went with my baby and again there was a group of older women knitting. you know what would have been nice? If one offered to watch my baby for all of 5 minutes so I could shop. No instead they pretty much ignored me. which leads me to my visit today. I went with my 2.5 yr old son. Not an easy task to try to shop and watch your son. I told him he could touch the bell on the way out or else he would sit on timeout, so being a toddler he touched the bell (on the door). So I put him on timeout where he said "Hi" at least a dozen of times to the 3 women knitting. Not 1 of them said hi back or anything. Maybe these women don't have grandchildren. In any case they were rude. Ignoring a 2.5 yr old is really nice. I had over $50 of yarn in my hand that I put back because I could not stand being in a store that had women who could not stop and say hi to my son for all of 5 seconds. I will also add that they have never asked if I needed help finding yarn, needles, or anything. They have never told me about their knitting group that meets ( I heard from some other lady that shops there). It is too bad that the customer service and clientele are so rude. I give them 1 star on friendliness and helpfulness and 1 star because they had buttons I wanted to buy today. I will never ever shop at this store again. i will buy my yarn and buttons online.

If she's offended by women talking about a good looking man I suspect she's often offended, since lots of women do that. As for expecting the knitters to babysit or entertain her child, she needs to get a grip! I go there to knit and relax not to care for someone else's child. It's a place of business not a day care center. I know the group of knitters to which she refers. They are a close knit (no pun intended) group of friends who've known each other for years. They know me but ignore me, too. Who cares!? I don't expect other customers to cater to my personality or quirks. The store staff has always been helpful, not just to me, but to every person I've seen come through the door.

Camels bison and…read more llamas North Light Fibers is a working yarn and textile mini mill that also has a little retail store. It was founded in 2008 and sells unique and luxury yarns from such exotic critters like llamas, alpacas, bison, camels and yaks that are kept near the mill. They also sell fibers from silk, bamboo and other natural things. The retail store has some extremely beautiful hand woven items like shawls, mittens and sweaters but the main business seems to sell the actually yarns that they get from the creatures. A fascinating place to look around and experience a whole different world. The mill also has lots of classes on knitting, crocheting and other crafts and has the goal of increasing environmental awareness and knowledge of these rather esoteric arts. Keeping, caring for and then shearing the animals and then hand weaving something from the hair is indeed becoming a lost art. One of the great things about North Lights are the creatures. No cages or small and cramped pens, all the animals roam free in wide open areas. You can actually walk up to the llamas and alpacas and get to see them doing the things llamas enjoy doing. The critters are all seem very mellow, contented and use to people and the parents didn't seem to mind at all when I went right up to the baby to take a pic. North Light Fibers isn't the easiest place to find but it's a unique place for anyone interested in knitting, crafts, farming, or just a cool place to see some very cute llamas. They are doing something different, creative, imaginative and very cool. A place that is worth the effort to find and one that you won't soon forget.
