Classic diner food. We went for breakfast. Pancakes are fluffy and delicious. My friend ordered the Belgian waffle and it was also good. It's a bit more pricey than Dennys. Breakfast, and coffee for three adults plus a milk and a child's breakfast added up to $51.00. It's not a place that I see myself craving, or needing to return to immediately, but I am not opposed to eating there again if the opportunity presents itself. read more

Knapps, Knapps, Knapps..... What can I say. Do you like American diners? How about American diners because they are an American diner and not falsely trying to act like an American diner with their imitation decor of memories of past. Well, that's one of the things on my list of why I choose Knapps every Tuesday night in the heart of the Proctor district of the north end Tacoma. The environment is quiet, overly neighborhood friendly, and with a modern diner that has a comfortable relaxed trustworthy pulse of the American tradition. So one item that compelled me to review Knapps, among many things, is the current rating. Usually i will 5 star for the absolute best food, or a 5 star for the most amazing establishment combined with outstanding customer service. Rarely you may even find both the best food ever along with the other items. Knapps is getting a 5 star from me because the current rating of three stars is not justified. I believe Knapps is a solid 4+ rating and as a regular and a foodie critic I think I have the right to state that for the record as well as over rate by one star to push the votes in their favor. Above all this, I walk in the door on Tuesday evenings and the staff smiles, compliments on how they know it must be Tuesday and processes my order without hesitation. I absolutely adore this staff, the other regulars are great as well. The food is superb and made to order with quickness and attention to the details. Knapps is anachronistic. I mean that in good way. If you think a high-end local family restaurant (those don't exist much any more) circa 1950 you won't be far off. The service is fast, the staff experienced, the pies and soup can be very good indeed. I can't speak for the bar. They cater to locals and the age skews high. You are still a newbie if you've only been eating there for a year but they'll know your name long before that. It's been a local institution forever and doesn't change much (aside from a little neon and a modern cash register it looks about the same as it looked when I first saw it in the 70's; and it was old fashioned then). It's well maintained, they just remodel in ways that hardly changes the look. The menu has had some updates (e.g. there is a veggie burger now) but it hasn't changed much over the many decades it's been there. I notice there aren't that many 5 star reviews here but they earned every star and more in my book. Here's why. I have family in Tacoma that are regulars and I mean REGULARS. 2-7 times a week regulars over a decade or two. I go there pretty much every day I'm in Tacoma as well. My mother slowly slipped into dementia over many years and going to Knapps was often the highlight of her day. They knew her and made accommodation for her. They knew what she wanted even when she didn't know any more. The family has friends there among both the other regulars and the staff. Angie, whose main job is at Knapps, regularly provided respite care. Her last meal was at Knapps. Her memorial service was at Knapps. So when I say this is a family restaurant, I mean that in a particularly deep way. read more

I love this place- it has a great old-school feeling because the waitresses are usually older & seem like something out of a movie or tv show (Mel's Diner?). They are friendly though, and you see a mixture of people from 80 yr olds to teens and families with children. The coffee sucks, but I love the eggs & potatoes (either homestyle or hashbrowns) I like the hashbrowns but I like them cooked crispy & cooked all the way through which doesn't always happen- no matter where I go. The oatmeal is great and so is the seasonal fruit. Eating on the opposite side of the dining area is much more entertaining. read more

Have you seen "The Goofy movie" by Disney, where they stop at a diner and Goofy gives his son Max, the road map, and makes him the "head navigator, and head which wayer of this years road trip". Well, this place COMPLETELY reminded me of the diner that they were at in that movie; if you've not seen that movie, then just picture any road side diner in your favorite movie, and it'll remind you of it. I see why local, and loyals like this place. The chicken fried steak was huge and good. The biscuits and gravy with the sausage was way too salty. The french toast was average. So I'll comment on their bar and the experience i had... a friend and I walked in b/c we needed something to help wake us up in the night. ordered a rebull vodka... This is what we got... tall glass, some ice, WITH ALL VODKA and a splash??? no I might even call it a mist of redbull. So next drink...7 on 7. Yeah... 7 ice cubes may be... So basically it's a bar that forgets to put the mixer in your drink., May be awesome place to prefunk but.. not a place to "hang out the whole night" To comment on the other part of the bar - Local science... the people who go are regulars. - People go here to talk - Average age 40+ - Packs in about 50 people - Bottle only with no draft beers. read more

I've only eaten breakfast here but I've eaten it many times over years... For breakfast you can't beat this place. Good food, good service.. clean, prices a little more than Denny's but worth it. I always get a Monster Omelet.. Everything plus hashbrowns inside , smothered in gravy.. (you can even substitute SOS gravy). What more could you ask for? But each of member my regular group has a favorite item and it all looks good.. On the subject of SOS Gravy.. best in town, hands down.. and I love my SOS. Don't listen to the Debbie Downers below.. Even with a soft place in my heart (or head) for this place, even with literally decades of warm fuzzy memories of times with family and friends here, even with an Entertainment coupon, my dinner last night was one of the worst meals I ever paid $27 for. Uhg.. We had such high hopes for this place. It's located in the very cool and popular Proctor District - and has a prime location. This place was so bad, we couldn't figure out how they could even stay open -- except for just having been there FOREVER! It really looks and feels like a Denny's in there - and even has the service to match. No atmosphere, slow wait staff, disappointing meals. Just skip it and go anywhere else in that area. read more

This place is both a diner and a dive/bar lounge. Thankfully you can enjoy either without even knowing the other is there (until you need to use the restroom, which is in the middle). I've only tried the diner side. It's reasonable food at reasonable prices and reasonable service. There is nothing fancy, no creativity, and no frills. That's not a complaint, but a statement of fact. Knapps is the place you go for old-school diner food, not artistic fusion nonsense. it's a locals joint. booth mostly. try there butter horn (took pic today). if you like cinnamon rolls try if but I'll bet you won't finish it. very dense very thick and very satisfying. inside scoop this place is related to the poodle dog, harvestar. and the burrs. if you like one you should like them all. very similar. and very old clientell. this place has a bar attached but really just a nice cozy family restaurant. it's not the best food but you can do alot worse. the wait staff are always sweet here. love them ladies read more

I love pasta and wanted to have pasta for dinner. Hubby isn't as big of a pasta fan so we decided to find a restaurant that has a little bit of everything. I must admit I'm a little skeptical about ordering pasta from a "regular" restaurant, but I decided to try the fettuccini Alfredo and hope for the best. I'm so glad I did. It was delicious! I am pretty new to tacoma and was originally was brought to the proctor side of town to try a place down the road called soul, my oversight of their noon start time lead me to a locked door with a bit of time to kill. Proctor being billed as a bit of a local business shopping center I decided to walk around. A short walk down the same side of the road brought me to the doorstep of a little place called Knapps. Just peeping through the window, the layout and scattered older crowd and men in work gear screamed classic diner food, I listed to my grumbling stomach and walked inside. You are greeted by the classic 'please seat yourself' sign and when you have the capacity to do so, your menus come out quick and friendly. I'm glad I was not deterred the bad service reviews. Please pay them no mind, each instance I read mentioned waiting to be greeted and seated and that's just not how things work here at Knapps. This is obviously a place fueled by consistent business of a pretty big group of regulars, my waitress knew almost everyone, besides me, that walked through the door. I was pleased to experience that though this was the case, my service was no different than that of the regulars in the tables next to me. I got the monster omelet and it was delicious and filling and the food in eye sight looks equally appetizing. The salad I got though bagged (typical diner salad) was fresh with absolutely no brown on my lettuce and the thousand island was the proper color. To be honest I'm a bit of a difficult customer with certain specific preferences and my waitress handled my questioning very well. I will definitely be back. read more

Coffee was worst I've ever had. They should feel ashamed for pouring it. Essentially was just brown water (you could easily see through it was so weak and diluted. When asked for a fresh pot it was met with disdain. Same result on second attempt. Food took 55 minutes to arrive (basic 2 egg breakfast) and what did arrive was greasy, not flavorful and lacking in any quality. One of the eggs was rotten and was visibly so. The fact it was still served is nearly unimaginable. The crowd on a Sunday morning appeared to be the hard drinking type---complete with 60+ year old and his 2 female rentable companions that had been up all night and found there way to Knapps. Super weird vibe here and will never go back....Felt very dirty being there. Left ASAP! read more

I had hot chocolate here one morning when I was a student at Mason Middle School and made a mental note to never return. I broke that in a desperate search for a breakfast place in Tacoma a month ago. Bad idea. This was and still is primarily for the geriatric crowd. I think the average customer age was 68 when I walked in. The food is bland and gross. The cleanliness level is pretty bad and the service is typical truck stop. I just really don't recommend eating here unless you want a break from Old People Chow to make you appreciate it more. Overall: Yuck! read more

Knapp's a step up from Sherri's in terms of homestyle cooking, but that's about it. There's some interesting history about the place as well, and it's nice to see that it's independently owned. However, the food and service is closer to a dive diner than anything else. I've been there a couple times, and the waitress has spilled something on us every time. Either that or they microwave our ice cream so it's a puddle of goo. Or they take forever to get back around to us with checks. Breakfast is pretty good, and the lunch sandwich options aren't bad. Beyond that I wouldn't recommend it too highly, there are other places that make home style dishes that are better. read more

I had a turkey sandwich that could have soaked through 5 napkins with the amount of butter on the bread used. My wife had a benedict that used a hollandaise straight from a store bought packet. First time in my life I've ever walked out after being served a cup of coffee while dining out before. No matter how bad of service I've got, this would be the first time, that's saying something. The hostess who appears to be an elderly lady seems absolutely miserable, and rude, for our second time coming here all because the Waffle Stop across the street has been closed both times we tried to go there. Waited over 30-35 minutes before finding our waitress who only ever took our order, never came back not once even for a coffee refill, I simply asked if our food was coming out soon and if we could get a refill on our coffee. The waitress, a middle aged brunette female responded so rude, so kirt, like how dare I ask where our food is! I couldn't believe the service we had here today. Will not be back, even if Waffle Stop is closed. To the waitress if you're reading this, if you hate your job and can't handle a busy day at work, please find another profession. My grandmother and I were enjoying a day out as she doesn't get around often and she was so looking forward to breakfast. I hope you find happiness. read more

The staff were plentiful, friendly, and quick as a whip. When I ordered my OJ it was fresh squeezed AND cold. I can't stand the sickeningly sweet taste of warm OJ. The pancakes were fluffy and HUGE. My only complaint was the Meat Lover's scramble. I'm a fat guy, I love meat. And this had a lot of it. A bit too much in fact, the meat to egg ratio was so off it was very crumbly and couldn't hold together. They also didn't melt the cheese all the way on top and when I got to the bottom of the plate there was a thick pool of oil they used to keep it from sticking. The prices were fair and the service more than made up for the lack luster eggs. Will return, but not to order any scrambles. read more

I've been to Knapps Lounge several times, but feel my first few visits are most worth sharing. First time: "You don't leave her unless you're fucked up" -Bartender lady (SO true, and SO awesome. They really do hook up their drinks for a reasonable price!) Second time: Waitress remembered our names! Then preceded to give us a drink on the house. First and last visit. With current virus precautions in place world-wide, why permit a server with a noticeable cough to serve customers? She coughs into her hand then serves coffee. Completely a waste of time. Been in the Proctor discrit for years and I will say things haven't changed much at Knapp's. Ordered the special of the day grilled prime breakfast. My wife ordered a Hot turkey sandwich. All of our food was cold, didn't get a refill of coffee or water!! Worse service I have received in a long time. Waitress gave the wrong food to a table and about a minute later realized and came back and got the food and brought it over to the correct table and sat it down and then said they didn't touch it but I can have it redone if you would like. Never asked how our food was or anything not even when we paid. Bad service throughout.. Will not be back. read more
