I was on a Viking River Cruise in May, 2024 and was stricken with a very serious gastrointestinal illness. I was taken to Klinikum by ambulance and immediately placed in an isolation room as they had no idea upon admission of my illness or likely threat of contagion. Within minutes, a very nice Doctor asked for my phone(iPhone) which had a complete medical history, then he asked me a series of questions about my illness. My phone was returned after the hospital retrieved my medical history. The Doctor personally did an ultrasound of my abdomen and placed me on an IV to keep me hydrated. I believe there was medication in the IV as well. I was very impressed with this hospital and the caring attitude of all the personnel as well as the Dr. Of course, I was considered a cash patient and they accepted my credit card for full payment. I was amazed at the cost which was under 300 Euros for the entire day in the hospital, the examinations as well as post release medications provided. This would not have been the case in the US. An additional kindness and professional concern was that upon my return to the US, I received a letter from the hospital for me to give to my own Dr. outlining the treatment and diagnosis along with ALL of the blood test and ultra sound results. As a tourist in need, I could not have found any better treatment anywhere in the world and I am immensely grateful for the professional care, kindness and courtesy afforded to my by all at KLINIKUM in Passau, Bavaria. A big thanks to them. read more
Because going to the hospital with an injury just isn't fun I cannot bring myself to add the fifth star, but given how pleasant (all things considered) our experience here was, I probably should. We were referred here by a local Orthopedist after my daughter broker her leg during our recent visit vacation in Germany. Being in a foreign country, not knowing what care providers were best, and without local insurance, we had concerns on top of getting our daughter well as quickly and painlessly as possible. When we were told that we would be cash patients, and knowing I only had 150 Euros in my pocket, the worries multiplied. Warning: This review will also provide some political commentary. We wheeled my daughter straight to emergency intake. As we passed through the hospital getting there, it was clear that it was clean and modern, and that all major specialties were represented at the hospital. They even had a Davinci Surgical Lab which is something more recently added to our hospital back home. They asked what we were there for and who we had been referred by, and we were immediately escorted to a treatment room by a nurse. No paperwork and no waiting room. They immediately began asking questions and treating her, with the doctor arriving in less than ten minutes. During the process I was asked for my name and phone number, and my daughter's name and age. We never had to provide any additional information, identification, etc. They were very good with my daughter, and through examination, review of the orthopedists x-rays, and through taking their own x-rays quickly diagnosed her and provided a treatment plan. She was put in a cast and provided with crutches. I cannot emphasize enough how efficient, kind, and professional everyone was. I will say that speaking German proficiently helped, as the nurse was clearly uncomfortable with English, and I do not think that the doctor could speak it much at all; and certainly not the medical/technical vocabulary. We did need to pay in cash, and the grand total for EVERYTHING was only 72 Euros. While I have been leaning more towards supporting socialized medicine, if the experience and care at Klinikum Passau is representative of socialized medicine in much of Western Europe, sign me up! I know the taxes are higher to make it possible, but knowing that EVERYONE can receive that caliber of care would make it worth it. So if you are hurt or ill near Passau (in Bavaria) Germany, have no reservations about seeking treatment at the local hospital campus there. read more
