Let's just say this is our family's new favorite Chinese restaurant! Came here on a whim on Feb. 1st to continue our celebration of Lunar New Year and we were ALL PLEASANTLY SHOCKED at pretty much everything. Ever since the food quality and taste at our long time favorite spot went downhill, we have been looking for our next family favorite and believe this is it. -Cindy was our waitress and was fabulously accommodating. She spoke pretty good English AND had a sense of humor, you don't see that everyday! -their tables for 10 are the bigger sized ones so you have enough elbow room to enjoy your food without feeling so cramped. -they changed our plates multiple times, if I remember correctly, I'd say it was at least 4 times. -we ordered the 10 top menu and every course was generously portioned and delicious. We also ordered a couple of ala carte dishes and those did not disappoint. There is valet parking at the Hyatt and the restaurant does validate. I'm hoping that our future dining experiences here will stay consistent but so far, so good! read more

Obviously,that was really a BAD dinner. When we just had a meal for half an hour, suddenly a man began to ask us to check and began to clean the table. Even at that time, there were only two tables in the store. If you don't want to receive guests, just don't open. NO GENTLE.NO GOOD. read more

This restaurant is located in the basement of a high rise but is well decorated. We ordered its specialty Dungeness crab ( live) and it was wonderful, The staff was attentive and the place reminded me of the better Cantonese restaurants in Hong Kong. We only had a vegetable dish aside from the crab so cannot comment on other dishes. read more

Efficient service, nice ambiance, and mixed reviews on the food. The Dungeness crab was the star at the restaurant, and while pricy, I thought it was worth it. Ours was a 2.5 lb behemoth and came with a wonderful garlic based sauce. It was also cut a little to make it easier to get to the meat but it still required effort. The Peking duck was good, but I would have preferred the skin to be crispy. They had also rolled up parts of the duck in pancakes already which was a bit different but good. I wish they had given pancakes for the rest of the duck. The Sichuan wantons were just okay. The bok choy and shiitake mushrooms was good but not a standout. read more

Back again second year in the row. The dungeon crab continue to not disappoint. This time I brought my friend family along and they loved it. The customer service was also on point as our waitress was very accommodating since we have small kids. The ambience of the restaurant was lively because we were there on the weekend so they were busy. Expensive as our final bill including gratuity was $450 but that is what you pay when you're in Honolulu and with great company. read more

I think our first impression of seeing this restaurant while walking by was that it couldn't be good authentic Chinese food. However, upon entering and ordering from their menu, everything appeared to be as authentic as you can guess. I think the best dishes that we ordered were the honey walnut shrimp, the fresh fried crab, and the salt and pepper fish fillet? The staff was pretty attentive! To get down to the restaurant, you would have to walk down a flight upstairs. I'm not sure if there's a ramp or elevator to bring you down. About 700 ft.² from what I can recall but the tables were pretty big as we were a party of eight. read more

This place is EXTREMELY overpriced. Over $150 for a lobster. I wouldn't recommend if you value your wealth. The food was very okay, others say its great, but I disagree. Let me just tell you that the waitstaff were so courteous and well-attentive with us! Their recommendation on the specialty live dungeoness crab and the honey walnut shrimp were perfect - arrived hot to the table and the crab was not over cooked or mushy. The shrimp are wowza huge and not overly battered. Having a nice savory meal with a sweeter accompaniment paired well. It is an inconspicuous entry and you nearly feel like you're heading down into a secret dining room. The food was just spectacular and the plates coming out of the kitchen around to the other tables looked just as amazing. It was an easy and lovely stroll from the Royal Hawaiian Center and Moana Surfrider Hotel, maybe couple blocks away. There really is no parking right at the restaurant since it is off the heavy pedestrian and shipping area so you'll need to find parking elsewhere and walk to the restaurant. read more

We were really looking forward to trying Kirin in Waikiki. The exterior of the restaurant looked charming and inviting, with a classic look that suggested a cozy, authentic dining experience. From the outside, it seemed like a hidden gem--exactly the kind of place you hope to stumble upon while exploring Honolulu. Unfortunately, as soon as we stepped inside, that illusion was completely shattered. The smell that hit us walking through the door was absolutely awful--like an old, wet carpet that had been left to rot in a sealed-off basement. The mildew and musty odor were overpowering, so much so that it literally made our stomachs turn. We stood there for a moment hoping it would pass or that maybe we were imagining it, but it only got worse. It didn't smell like a place where food should be served--it smelled like it hadn't been properly cleaned or maintained in years. I can't even imagine sitting through a meal in that environment, let alone trusting the cleanliness of the kitchen. We didn't stay. We couldn't. We turned around and walked right out. It's a real shame, because the location and the appearance from the outside really set up high expectations, but the inside was nothing short of terrible. I don't know how a restaurant operating in such a tourist-heavy area can let conditions get that bad. Maybe they've had better days in the past, but right now, it's not somewhere I'd recommend to anyone. There are so many better places in Waikiki--do yourself a favor and skip this one. read more

Service here is terrible. We walked in and were ignored for about 5 minutes--no one waiting behind us or in the waiting area when the hostess finally asked how many in our party. She seemed angry we were there? Honestly we should've left at that moment, but when you're hungry. I didn't grab a picture of the food which was not good either way. It could've been the bad taste the service left in my mouth; but the chicken and honey walnut shrimp we ordered was lacking in flavor and the chicken tasted dry and burnt. Would Not recommend this location at all, we never had our waters filled and never got checked on either. Just overall bad experience. Expensive ass dinner, bad service, bad food. NOT worth it. Chinese food in Hawaii probably isn't what you're flying across an ocean for, but it's satisfactory. The entrance goes downstairs underneath the farmer's market above it, but once you're in, it's a relatively nice dining experience. Inside Kirin Restaurant, you get very typical "classically grand" Chinese restaurant vibes - even the fish tank from which they pull out fresh sea food to cook is there. The food is good enough, and the service is fine for a Chinese restaurant (but could be considered to be on the poorer side). They did try to (quite aggressively) upsell us on trying some seafood, which was a bit frustrating, but the dishes were did order were good. I enjoyed everything except for the spicy fish in chili oil, which felt less filling and worth it than the others, but it still tasted fine. All in all, good Chinese food for Hawaii. I've had worse, and I've had better elsewhere. read more

We actually wanted dim sum.. so our only disappointment is that like most Chinese restaurants, they only have their full menu of dim sum during lunch hours.. so we would love to come and try during that time. I ordered the live crab because the menu picture looked good & the server said it was the best thing on the menu. The picture is not accurate. Over $100 for a 2.5 lb crab & sauce that had a snotty texture & bland flavor. Gross & expensive. I asked for hot sauce & just covered the thing in it. Hot & sour soup was ok. We asked if the tofu & mushrooms was just that & were told yes. It's not. You get some tofu, a couple mushrooms & a pile of snow peas. Came in without a reservation at 6:30pm on a Sunday! We got seated right away with a party of 5! We ate family style and ordered 7 dishes~ You have to order the Peking duck with BAO. It's so delicious and the BAO is very soft and fluffy. My next favorite thing I ate was the beef chow fun. A classic that's always good. There was a lot of meat and noodles for everyone.
