After a long drive from Nelson, we arrived into sleepy Greymouth and immediately looked for a place…read moreto grab dinner. Not going to lie, there's not much choice. We settled on Zaika, a Moroccan restaurant. We dropped in on a Saturday evening (around 7:30pm) to a packed house. The inside has a strange layout; they don't make full use of their space very well. Service is friendly enough but they were running around and seemed to forget about us. Pay at the counter when you're done. The menu is split into starters, Zaika bowls, Zaika wraps, pita pocket, Zaika salad, kid's meals and a royal platter. The platter ($49.90 NZD) sounded tasty and a good way to share. - Wedges ($5.00 NZD) - this was actually a good portion size. Decent seasoning and most of the wedges were crispy. The sauce/aioli was neutral but tasteless. - Grilled fish Zaika bowl ($17.50 NZD) - we decided to share a bowl and asked for half Arabic rice and half couscous. For the salads, we picked corn salsa, grilled vege and carrots & beet. Sauce was hummus but it was different than what we expected. They mixed it in with the rest of the ingredients. We also got our bowl medium spicy but it was only in the tiniest manner. Fish was perfectly grilled but it was soooooo salty. Sad because it ruined the flavours. Everything else was tasty and nutritious. Try the lamb instead (our second choice).

Very tasty, affordable food and friendly staff. Looked at their website and got the impression this…read morewas a very upscale (and probably expensive) place. It was not. Quite casual and quite comfortable. They have ample seating and I believe do a good bit of take-out business. Several beers on tap and a pretty good wine selection. Just passing through town, but if I lived here I'd be a regular!

My Kiwi boyfriend and I have been touring the South Island for the past few weeks and ended up here in the very small town of Westport. After driving through torrential rains up the western side of the island for the past few days, we were looking for a respite. I always mentally scoff when I read that any restaurant outside of the NY/NJ area advertises itself as having authentic Italian food. But this small and unassuming place did just that. And I was craving some pasta after a steady diet of fish and chips, lamb and whitebait. We walked in and were immediately seated by the bar and had our drink orders taken, which arrived very quickly. I opted for the special, the spaghetti bolognese, while Boyfriend chose the Chicken Piccata. Let me tell you it was probably the best Bolognese I've had in my entire life. An extremely generous portion, accompanied by a yummy little palate-cleansing side salad, which I also devoured. Boyfriend was very happy with his dish as well, and we were both members of the "Clean Plate Club!!" I raved about the food to our very kind waiters/bartenders, and they said they would pass the compliments on to the chef. Who knew that on the wet, wild, western side of the South Island of New Zealand that you can get actual delicious Italian and Italian-inspired food in a tiny one-horse town?? I have been humbled. And my tummy is still full. And I'm still happy. Burp. Go there. And tell 'em Jenny from the Block sent ya.

Our experience was during the taste of Asia menu, and what delicious, fresh and authentic flavours. This is our new go-to and can't wait for the French menu next month. Go past the other, better known cafe in town and head just past it, up the old oak stair case to where Freddy's is located. You'll be greeted warmly at the top of the stairs and told to sit anywhere. They are used to those trying to grab food before catching the train so if you are in a hurry- they have already prepared items in the case on the counter, or they will suggest what on their regular menu can be gotten quickly. I had plenty of time but ordered one of the "fast dishes" and a cup of tea. In my instance, it was a bowl of seafood chowder and a slice of garlic bread. Quite tasty, warm and fresh, perfect to tide me over until dinner time. Other items on the menu include sandwiches, freshly prepared coffees and pastries, specials and soups of the day and more. It was a great suggestion to eat here and the prices are reasonable too. And the ambiance, while no frills, offers plenty of space to enjoy your food. You may want to grab a table at the windows and people watch as I did . . .very interesting the people who come through this little town! So the next time you are in Greymouth and looking for a great place to grab a bite, be sure to look up. Freddy's will be there waiting for you!

Has a mixture of two and four sweaters as well as a couch for you too relax. The food- has an extensive menu. The good I got was pretty average. Ordered the open Chicken and bacon sammy special. The bread was tough. The chicken was actually tender but not too much flavor. The whole sandwich was a saturated by the time it got to me. Nothing remarkable about the chips. The drinks- standard stuff. Have to say their flatwhite was very well made. Could do with some healthier shakes or fresh juice on the menu. The service- generally friendly, but seem overwhelm at times. Really wanting to give them a higher score, but they are the food does not quite match up with the food. No free internet, but a handy place to catch up with people if you don't want to go to the chain store coffee shop downstairs.
