Solid little street fair that Munich seems to throw on the weekend…read more
This event was more that just beer and schnitzel; split up into four distinct sections, one of the largest was focused on renewable clean energy. They had bikes that both kids and adults could pedal, showing just how much energy is needed to power different household objects. they also had a mini coal power plant that put off fake smoke (smelled weird too, assuming that was on purpose....or that we were just too close to the portable toilets).
There was of course loads of other things to see and do.
Keep in mind that one of the main boulevards leading into the old city is shut for this event; to a New Yorker, think city streets in august. The first quadrant is a sit-down fare of beer and sausage, with a main stage where local acts preform. Good if you're not in a walking mood, but definitely not the most fun at this event. Moving away from the old town was the "extreme sports" display. They had some ramps for BMX bikers, some super weird inline rollerbladers, and my personal favorite, a batting cage. They got a kick out of the fact that I knew how to hit a ball (however shitty my baseball skills have become, they were still better than my German counter parts #Merrica). Moving further way still was the children's zone, complete with little rides (and beer for mom and dad). Finally the furthest zone held the most fun in my opinion. Loads of food and booze stands plus awesome live music. They had a 50's guitarist playing when we were there, it set a nice tone for the evening. If you happen to find the guys selling bordeaux wine, give them a try; their selection was truly phenomenal and not overly expensive.
Definitely worth checking out if you find yourself in Munich; but we warned that every beer stand will charge you 2 euro deposit for glass, and the token they give you wont be accepted at any other stall. Feel free to BYOB, as street drinking in this city is totally kosher.
