The only thing I don't like about Kim's bakery is that it's not closer to my house. I know I'm selfish but can you blame me? Kim's Bakery has an amazing selection of Korean baked goods and all around amazing treats. Korean/Asian baked goods are fantastic in case you didn't know. They're simple, relatively cheap and not all that different from what you've had before (I promise, don't be scared). Their sweets are usually very soft and fluffy with lots of different creams/fillings (like french bakeries). I tried a couple different cream filled items, some peanut butter sandwich things (in a hot dog bun), black tea cookies a few other things I haven't opened yet. What did I like the most? This fluffy chocolate cream filled treat that I don't recall the name of. I pretty much just picked it up and put it in my basket. After one bite I was hooked. Tried to only have a few bites but finished the treat by the end of the day. Kim's also has a handful of savory treats as well. I got this one thing that was fried dough wrapped around Kim Chi. So goooooooood. I regret not buying the Pizza Hot Dog. It actually looked decent. It's a long drive from me so I can't imagine coming here anytime soon. BUT, every time I'm in this area I'll try to stop by. That's a given. If you've never been to a Korean bakery then you need to visit Kim's and buy a lot of different things. This bakery has so many delicious bakery goods inside; it's hard to not want to try everything! I got a couple things here the last time I came, including one of the fresh fruit cream cases as a birthday cake for my girlfriend. The cake was around $25-27 and they even wrote "Happy Birthday Victoria" on it for me before giving it to me in a nice cake box with candles and a knife. This is a really nice bakery, and the only korean bakery I have stumbled upon in St. Louis. I definitely wish I could come here more, but it's pretty far from where I live. But I will recommend this place to people who like Asian style fresh fruit and cream cakes, because these are delicious! read more

Finally a five! My husband and I found this wonderful gem today. I actually saw so many great reviews and remembered the treats in Japan and China. I wanted that same flavor and experience. This is it. The pastries are so unique, fresh, and taste great. All items are homemade and contain natural ingredients. We bought the donuts, breads, and sweet sponge cakes. When you bite into one, you are hit with the perfect amount of sweetness and a whole lot of freshness. Perfect for the palate and not overwhelming rich or sugary. And the prices!!!! Located conveniently along Olive near Highway 141, Kim Dok Won Bakery sits a couple of stores down from East East Oriental Grocery Store (another great place to visit!). This cute little bakery has a couple of tables outside their store as well a couple more inside. I've found that these seats normally fill up during the summer when they serve a popular Korean treat, patbingsoo (shaved ice, fruit toppings, condensed milk, and dressed with sweet beans). Once inside, you're immediately greeted by a friendly employee and a plethora of pastries, cookies, and cakes. Their cakes are spongy and aren't overly sweet. A few of my favorites are their condensed milk bread loaves (a nutty, wheat bread filled with a condensed milk cream), hot dog pastry (pastry with sliced hot dogs, sprinkled with cheese, and a light drizzle of ketchup), and all varieties of koroke (Japanese Croquettes filled with curries, kimchi, or various meats). While in Korea, I used to walk to the bakery every day for a loaf of their white bread. They were airy, fluffy, and slightly sweeter than our American version. My friend and I visited Korea together and both appreciate the food and culture. We ended up having an impromptu Korean day on a Sunday afternoon. After we had been to eat Korean food and shop at 2 of the nearby groceries we happened into Kim Dok Won Bakery. I had been here once before but I appreciated it much more on this second visit. It reminds me a lot of Paris Baguette which is a chain with French pastries that's on seemingly every street corner in Seoul. I have been assured by my friend that all of the cakes in the refrigerated case are very tasty. They have very pretty cakes with chocolate and cream/fresh fruit. I have tried many of the cakes and typical pastries that do not get refrigerated. They have a lot of tiny shortbread cookies that are nice as well. French pastries, including those tweaked for an East Asian palette as the case may be here, really aren't my passion. This day was different though. There was a little plate with samples on the counter near the cash register. It looked like triangles cut out of pancakes? My friend and I looked at each other and then at the nice girl behind the counter..."Hotteok?" we both asked at the same time. "Yes" said the girl behind the counter. Hotteok is a Korean street food. It's a pancake dough that's filled with brown sugar, honey, probably cinnamon, and a variety of nuts. It's served blisteringly hot and they put it in a paper cup so you don't burn off your fingers. These were fresh and warm and the girl said they have them on Saturdays and Sundays only. SCORE. I bought two packages of them to take to a family dinner that night. They reheated beautifully and my Jewish family scarfed down every Korean pancake I brought. You need to go on Saturday or Sunday and try these. NOW. *No hotteok photos. Really? I just came back from one of the world's most expensive cities where I rarely had to pay 5 euros for a dessert at a cafe. I've been looking for a Paris Baguette (Korean bakery chain) equivalent in St. Louis and I'm so happy that I found it! Kim's bakery is not large and I assume that it's family owned, which makes it all the more impressive that they make a large variety of delicious treats and that they do it well. I love Asian pastries and desserts because they're not overly sugary, and their signature flavors such as green tea, red bean, others are subtle but complex, and always bring back to my childhood. I'm as crazy about these flavors as a basic b is about pumpkin spice lattes. Ok so I went a little crazy the first time I came here and I bought close to 8-9 different breads/cakes/cookies for myself. They included koroke kimchi, cheesecake, black tea cookies, red bean bun, pizza hot dog, a few other sweet pastries/buns. I enjoyed all of it. My two favorites from this visit were the koroke kimchi and their cheesecake. The koroke was outstanding, it's basically a soft savory dough stuffed with kimchi (best when warmed up). They also have other varieties available such as vegetables, shrimp, and curry. The cheesecake is an Asian style cheesecake. Asian style cheesecakes are lighter on cream cheese and sugar, and the texture is more soufflé-like. Basically, it's a guilt free cheesecake (that's what I tell myself). I'll be honest - it's the fluffiest and best Asian style cheesecake I've ever had. Items that I still want to try: koroke curry (they were not available when I visited), French toast, their fruit tarts, heck, pretty much everything that I didn't get to try this time around. Got several kinds of pastries from Kim's on a Friday afternoon and very cold out. After donating blood at Red Cross a few doors down, I knew I deserved these yummy treats. Kim's offered good selections considering the day/time. Very affordable. Haven't tried them all but already a hit is Fist Ball. It's a heavy round ball of dried fruits and nuts that isn't dry at all. Love it! Some pastries remind me of pastries I found in Soeul, Singapore, and Bangkok that are more European/French type. Love them. Glad to have them in the neighborhood. French toast . Not like American French toast . It's not served with butter And syrup . It's in a plastic wrap . It's semi sweet and crunchy on the outside and chewy inside . Like nothing else you've ever eaten . Must be made with addictive drugs , bc I cannot get enough of these bad boys . Another customer asked my how I eat them , and I said the first piece won't make it out of the parking lot . I normally eat it in my car , as soon as I leave the place . I'm a fat kid and I will go nuts on you , if you even think about touching my remaining pieces . The kimchi puffs and whomps puffs are good too . Must haves: Chicken Karoke bun - it's like chicken pot pie taste in a wild bun if you bake it at 275 for 10 minutes. Probably micro too, but wow! Also beef, shrimp, kimchi and veggie. Fist bread - Wow! A buttery tasting ball of bread stuffed with raisins and some kind of fruit/beans. Topped with powder sugar. Chocolate almond twist - buttery, crisp. Green pee bun - yummy pee jam in a soft bun Red bean bun, like pee bun. Red bean bun with whipped cream (dairy) WOW!! Soft bread with strawberry - you'll want to take a nap on it. The lady at the register is always really nice. They have really interesting baked goods that are baked fresh every day. The 1 star off is for the fact that it has become really hard to get sandwich bread. I arrived when they opened and they said they didn't have any and wouldn't have any until mid afternoon. I came back around 5 since I had other things to do and they were sold out. The bread is baked fresh every day and from what I understand it takes about 4 hours to do a loaf. I hope that some day they make a habit of making more loaves OR starting their baking process way earlier so that they're ready when the doors open. It sucks to think you may have to plan your entire afternoon around trying to snag an elusive bread loaf, haha. read more

What a gorgeous array of offerings. The chill case is full of beautifully decorated cakes, mini cakes and tarts that are absolute perfect works of art. The "fruit cakes" were cakes that were covered with gorgeously glazed fruit -- kiwi, strawberries, blueberries and other fruits. So, they're not what you would think of as Aunt Sally's nasty Christmas "fruit cake." Another display case had incredibly thick pieces of French toast, and lots of thick, fried doughut-looking things. Korean pancake samples were available. How delicious! Quite sweet. Cookies and other assorted treats were prepackaged in small see-through and resealable bags along the wall. So many choices. We got cheese cookies, almond crisps, tomato paste cookies, a butter cream bun, Korean pancakes, honey cookies, a peanut butter bun and mocha bread. Everything was delicious; most weren't overly sweet. The Korean pancake was the sweetest with a filling of sugary-mapley goo. read more

My friend and I wanted to go on a food adventure one day so we drove out to this place. Walking in, I wasn't overly impressed. There were a bunch of packaged things on the counter and nothing overly exciting seeming behind. I picked out a few things to buy and decided to try to patbingsu that everyone seemed to be talking about. And I agree with everyone -- for the cost, this dessert was meh at best. The ice was too chunky and the toppings not enough. So why did I give this place 4 stars? I am obsessed with their tea cookies. They're delightful little shortbread-like almondy cookies with slight bits of tea. They just MELT in your mouth. Also, their strawberry wafer-type things are AMAZING. Here is the deal on this place: It has the BEST BING SOO in ST. LOUIS!! I can say that because you can't find this anywhere else. Probalby another hidden St. Louis secret. Basically, Bing Soo is the assortment of red beans, doughy sweet stuff, fruits, and shaved ice coupled in a big bowl. They only serve it from May until the hot days of summer die down. I didn't even speak about the pastries and baked goods. Slightly on pricier side but Korean bakeries tend to be mroe pricier. Certainly tasty. I am a def. fan of this korean bakery. The bread is made fresh daily and their quality is pretty impressive. They have bread filled with sweet red bean paste, mung bean paste, peanut cream, butter cream, and custard. sooo gooodd. I like their breads b/c the fillings are always equally spread. If you go to some bad ones.. they have no fillings or it is always shifted to one side. blah. Try their almond crackers. AMAZING! I wasn't going to get them but I accidentally dropped the container, felt bad so i bought them. And I am addicted to them.. bad bad bad for my diet. If you keep walking towards the counter, they have more breads inside the glass. and They are fried breads.. mmmm basically korean donuts. sooo good, I had ones with red bean paste in them and they are delicious. Also, try their sticky rice ball that is filled red bean paste and it is also fried. For my birthday, I love to get their fruit cake. Fresh fruit on top with fluffy korean cake with light frostings that is not too sweet. I have to come here at least once a week! I usually get a couple of red bean breads and the green bean flower breads, as well as whatever is new. I love how the baker is always coming up with new things to try.. some are just okay, but some turn out really good! I really admire chefs who experiment and try to come up with new stuff.. total respect! The bread here is kind of expensive, especially compared with the Chinese bakeries (which are really good too, but different style), but just a couple of breads a week I can handle. Right now, I'm in love with the chestnut bread (shaped like a ball, usually inside the display case) and the banana bread (inside the case too). My all time favorite is the Okinawa bread, but they don't make it very often :(. And my boyfriend loves the custard bun (really yummy and soft). The pumpkin loaves are good, but it's a little too big for me to handle, and the big red bean flat bread is super delicious too! Basically, I can't live without this place. Plus, I can go to Dong Dong, the Korean supermarket, right next door after I visit the bakery. Convenience is awesome. ALSO, the patbingsu (shaved ice) is really good, but they only have it during the summer. It IS kind of expensive, so we only get it once in a while. HINT, if you can't finish the bread in a day or two... put it in the FREEZER. When you wanna eat it, put it in a toaster over and toast it for around 2-3 minutes (or until just starting to crisp, but make sure it doesn't get BURNT) on either side. I will concur with other reviews, the very best pat bing soo! I will also tell you the baked goods are simply to die for! The light and fluffy cake it's undeniably the greatest things ever! And lets not forget the smooth creamy butter cream icing layered in between. It's not too sweet so it's a delicious balance. There are very many treats that i would encourage you to go in and try.
