I kept asking about piece after piece and Ronél Ströh never made me feel like I was wasting her time. Over the course of the trip she really learned my taste and found a stunning painting by Jim Warren. She Tracked it down in the catalog, wasn't even on the ship. She just knew I'd want it. Over different days she explained the difference between lithographs, serigraphs, hand-embellished pieces. I price-checked in front of her, never felt embarrassed. Didn't buy until basically the last day. Zero pressure, ever. I Left with two Kre8s, a Peter Max, a Fazzino, and that Warren. About the pricing, yes it's above street market, but the frames alone are stunning. I tried framing the complimentary lithographs I received and got a reality check fast on what framing actually costs. So honestly, the framing alone and when you include shipping is already at least 250+ everything arrived faster than I expected, beautifully packed. No issues whatsoever. One thing nobody mentions: once you buy, suddenly everyone on the ship has an auction story. There's this whole little art community that forms onboard. Genuinely fun. Go for the free drink. The bride picked the painting for the group which was a sunset with a palm tree. Larisa was very sweet and came early to my in-laws home to set everything up an hour or so before the party started. Larisa had an easy breezy attitude which I think helps with the pressure of others wanting to do a good job with their painting. She did a great job explaining how to paint our painting and was non-judgmental of everyone's work. She was also funny and personable - you can tell she is passionate about her business! The price was $35/person and the painting lasted 2 hours total. We all gave her cash. All the supplies were provided and all the ladies had a great time. Once our paintings were dry, Larisa took a picture of us and our creations.

You check out the calendar online, pick the painting class you'd like to attend, show up, and paint! They play some good music and the instructor paints along with you. This is not paint by numbers, or having a pre-sketched canvas. You sketch out your picture, and the insturctor teaches you how to paint! Classes last about 2 hours. You will be amazed at how much you can get done in 2 hours! They also have classes for Tots and Parents! This is a good time, and something totally different to do! Check it out!

This is a great hidden gem and all of the galleries are free. It's definitely really small like you could see everything under an hour. There's also a small gift shop.

A friend and I sweated our way through both floors of the gallery because they had some interesting pieces, but it was cooler outside in the breeze. That being said, this gallery has an eclectic selection of paintings, prints and sculptures, including some lifelike and life-size sculptures and more abstract pieces. Some of the "art" was so immersed in pop culture (a painting based on the Family Guy cartoon? Puh-leez...) that I thought it was kind of junky. However, I liked a lot of the paintings and almost all the sculptures, including some great bronze sculptures by Yuroz. The building itself is pretty cool, too. There's a glass atrium at one side where some sculptures are on display, and there's a spiral staircase up to the second floor.

I visited here over a Thanksgiving holiday many moons ago. My wife Kelly is a native of the Detroit Metropolis and introduced me to this gem. In turn, I introduce it to you and give you my fullest recommendation to visit as soon as you possibly can.

I visited Cranbrook Art Museum with my parents last week, and I really enjoyed my visit…read more Cranbrook has a fascinating history. The art museum is just one part of the sprawling Cranbrook campus. The campus began when Detroit newspaper mogul George Booth and his wife Ellen Scripps Booth founded the complex, which eventually included schools, an academy of art, their house and gardens, a church, and more. The art museum is a contemporary art museum. The exhibition spaces are on the smaller side, but we saw two great-if-small exhibits: Akea Brionne: A Dreaming Hour and Monumental Color: Cecily Brown, Sam Gilliam, and Joan Mitchell (both close on September 6, 2026). Downstairs, they have two ongoing exhibits: Designing Cranbrook: The Saarinens' Eclectic Vision (a must whether or not you're visiting the Saarinen House or any of the other architecture sites on campus) and Shaping the Field: Ceramics at Cranbrook Academy of Art. The museum has a small cafe (open in the summer) as well as a small giftshop. We were already doing another tour, so we weren't able to join a Behind-the-Scenes Collections Wing Tour, which allows you to see a selection of the 8,000+ items in Cranbrook's collection inside their storage facility. Not being able to join that tour was my biggest regret of our visit to Cranbrook. There are other things to do at Cranbrook, much of it seasonal. But there's a separate page for that! There's a lot to do at Cranbrook, but the art museum is worth a visit, especially if there's an exhibit you're interested in or if you can swing the tour of the highlights of the permanent collection!

I saw this place pop up in Berkley a few years ago and was intrigued. I don't consider myself an…read moreartist by any stretch of the imagination. I hadn't attempted anything creative since the last art class I had in grade school. But I was interested when I saw they offered a Zentangle class which promised the only artistic ability you needed was to draw a stick figure. I took the class and ended up really enjoying it. It is essentially structured, meditative doodling. I came back for several more Zentangle classes when I found it was a great way to relieve stress and get out of the rut of logical, left-brain thinking. I never intended to create great art, but rather to get in touch with the creative part of my brain and to enjoy the meditative qualities of creating art. But I enjoyed Zentangle so much that I eventually branched out and tried several other classes that included things like intuitive painting, sculpture, and traditional Japanese Sumi-e black ink painting. Each class was fun and informative, and I was surprised to find sometimes I actually liked some of the art I created, too, and not just the process. The owner, Debby, and the instructors have all been great. They clearly love helping people learn and get in touch with their creativity. Articipate offers a wide variety of events, classes and lessons. It seems like there is something for everyone - regardless of age and whether you consider yourself artistic or not. It seems like a glut of places have popped up in the past few years offering private "paint parties". I have been to a couple of those and while they can be fun, this place takes an approach that is much more fun and engaging than a one size fits all "paint by numbers" approach - regardless of artistic ability. I encouraged anyone interested to check out what they offer and let the friendly owner and instructors help you get in touch with your creative side.

At Soul Studio, participants work with volunteers using fibers, ceramics, paint, sculpture, wood, digital arts and more to express themselves and create works of art. These crafts and art pieces then are displayed in the galleries and are available for sale to members of the community. The best part is that the proceeds help the organization and additionally the artists receive some of the funds.
