The sides were sensational. Mac & cheese was more cream than cheese based, but an incredible cheese taste nevertheless. The fries were crispy & high quality. A simple rustic vegetable plate hit the spot too. The mashed potatoes were creamy & flavorful. I had a glass of wine while my family had soft drinks. This for me is dining at its finest. Not complicated cuisine. Highest execution & quality of ingredients. I'll say again: it evokes my European heritage & the food my folks made growing up. 194 Euros. A deal for what you get. I could do this again and again and again.

I walked into Le Coq and Fils, which was by far the most recommended chicken in Paris, and saw people eating their birds in crispy white button downs and nice dresses using forks and knives, while sipping white wine by the bottle. I knew my Chase Sapphire Preferred had been walked into an ambush. We sat down and were greeted by a well dressed French waiter, who I could not tell if he was being rude or funny the entire dinner. I scanned the menu, and felt like I took a baseball bat to the liver when I saw whole chickens and 1 side priced from €125-169... meaning the most expensive bird was $198 USD. Pain. I couldn't hide the shock on my face. I told my girlfriend we are calling an audible and doing the €50 ($58 usd) half chicken, which still HURT. I love the bird so much because it's cost efficient and delicious, but at these prices I would rather just eat a steak. Anyways, I'm done complaining about the price. It is what it is. When in Rome. We went with the half chicken, a side of mac & cheese, house made french fries, and a garden salad. The chicken came nicely plated and doused in a brown sauce garnished with purple garlic. Against my living will and testament, I cut in with the fork and knife and took my first bite. Don't get me wrong, it was a good chicken. It was solid. But not worth the price, and it was a bit dry if we are being really honest. I've had better chickens for under $7 that I grabbed in a plastic bag at a grocery store. I then realized I have to be myself, and ate the remaining portion with my bare hands as I just feel like this is the most efficient way to eat chicken. The mac & cheese on the other hand, was legitimately the best mac I've had in my entire life. It was crusted on the outside, and perfectly cheesy when you broke through the crust as steam escaped. It was delectable. Fries were gas too. All in all, I will chalk this up to a cultural difference and my American ignorance. I just am not willing to pay these kinds of prices for any chicken, even if it was raised on a free-range farm by Jesus Christ himself. IG @johnny.novo Tiktok @jnov__ Substack @johnnynovo

When i asked why the restaurant is called "Gumbo Yaya" with no Gumbo the chef/owner who was so very kind said gumbo means a lot of things in Louisiana... My mother and I have been making Gumbo all our lives. We smiled and shook our heads. Ok then. lol This is a play on Soul Food. Not really southern cooking but Soul Food for folks that don't regularly cook. White-Euro comfort food. The staff is lovely. Our server was highly entertaining and sweet. The restaurant was packed so it's got a core audience which is great. But it's not Soul Food.

When we arrived, it was a bit small on the inside, almost where you had to get up to let someone else from another table out, but I was just glad to be here. We found the service to be lackluster, and although we eventually recognized that gumbo yaya was just the name, it was disappointing not to be able to have any actual gumbo that night. The decor and theme of the restaurant were so cute, and I loved the hip-hop and musical touches around. Coming from the States, when we see fillet on the menu, we often associate it with fish, so since individuals in the group were pescatarian, we thought it would be great for us all, as it was inclusive. But we quickly realized that fillet there was just a chicken breast, so from that, the menu just proved to be very limiting with basically just chicken, waffles, and a few soul food sides. I did decide on the chicken, waffles, yams, and the sweet tea, and I thought everything was pretty good, but it wasn't what I hoped it would be. But regardless, I'm glad we got to try a black-owned restaurant in Paris.

La Tour was closed in August so I was hoping that this place would have very good rotisserie chicken or even duck, but boy were we wrong. The week that we were in Paris, it was blazingly hot. Dinner at 7:30pm was still very hot if you wanted to dine on the river. Basically, tables on the bridge where you had a nice view of the Seine River and the back of Notre Dame. Service was very challenged - took us forever to get any service, drinks, food. This is probably where all the tourists asked to be sat and you will pay for it with the less than ideal experience. Food was bad. We ordered the duck prepared two ways...the duck breast was fine but the confit of leg....did not fall off the bone like I was used to. We kept carving and it was impossible to cut. Food was served to us lukewarm too. After a couple of bites, we abandoned it. I seriously do not understand how this restaurant owned by La Tour D'Argent could allow food like this to be served. It was not inexpensive so while casual, I don't understand why the food was so bad. Sister had the roast chicken which was just okay. We just wanted to pay the bill and leave.
