This gallery was highly recommended by a lady working in the Buffalo Bill Cultural Center, Sadly, when we arrived around noon on a Wednesday, the gallery was closed and we did not get to see inside. We'll keep this on "our list" for our next trip through Oakley, Kansas. read more

If you're into fossils, this is a five star. For everyone else, some cool looks as serious fossils, local murals, and friendly folk. I also scored a classic Brownie camera her for 5 bucks! Chuck and Barbra are knowledgeable, and are connected in the fossil world all over. They've lectured across the U.S., and have friends in serious places, like at New York's Museum of Natural History. I mostly enjoyed the conversation, and when Chuck explained some of the fossils and murals, I appreciated them much more than I would have otherwise. If you're a museum type, check this out. read more

We took a chance and what a gem! This little museum may not look like much, but they had AMAZING fossils inside. Chuck and Barbara are both paleontologists and have lots to share about what they've dug up here in KS. If you are passing nearby to see Monument Rocks, this is a must stop! read more

Small local shop. The owner and shopkeeper is a fossil hunter and shows many of his own finds from the nearby area here. Fossils are also for sale for very reasonable prices compared to what you'd pay at a fancy shop in a big city. read more

Specialties

Kansas Fossil Museum, Art Gallery, and a great gift shop!

History

Established in 1991.

We were asked by visitors to open our art gallery and later decided to add our fossils to the mix. Keystone Gallery is one of the only remaining limestone buildings in Logan County, Kansas and we are between Monument Rocks and Lake Scott State Park. Since our inception, we've had visitors from all over. Stop by and visit. You will be surprised!!

Meet the Business Owner: Chuck B.

Chuck Bonner is well reknown for his Kansas fossil finds. He found the pleisosaur with a fetus inside on display in LA, Bonnerichthys (named for him) the biggest species in the Western Interior Seaway, plus his paintings. His father, Marion, started hunting fossils in 1925.

The Buffalo Bill Cultural Center is just 10-15 minutes off I-70 at the Oakley exit. The center has a ton of travel literature and brochures. The lady who greeted us was very personable and quite helpful with information and directions to Monument Rocks and New Jersulem State Park The cultural center is located adjacent to the Buffalo Bill Sculpture which is a very large sculpture of Buffalo Bill and a Buffalo. The sculpture alone is worth the short detour.

It has lots of little things to look at and the obligatory wall of magazines and pamphlets of other attractions and maps. The person that was working and was very sweet and nice. She was working in her office so I was finished getting my postcards and pen and magnet. She said I could just let her know when I was ready and she came out and I paid about $20 for all that. It's a good little informative center. If you need about 20 minutes to stretch your legs, I recommend stopping by.

While at the Buffalo Bill Center, we spotted signs for the Fick Fossil and History Museum which is practically across the street from the Buffalo Bill Center. So, we decided to stop for a quick visit. This is a great little museum and was an unexpected find in the middle of Kansas. In my opinion, this was more of a history museum than a fossil museum although they did have several impressive fossil displays. Having recently visited the Sternberg Museum, I was more interested in some of the historical exhibits than I was in seeing more fossil displays. Admission is free; it's convenient to I-70 (Oakley exit). Allow 1-2 hours, longer if you have kids.

It was free to enter and no more than 2 minutes off of highway 70, so no worries if you're on a budget. We planned to get in and out in an hour, which did not happen. We took 2 hours. It was very very fun, but don't come here if you like fossils and have somewhere to be! All of the fossils were found here, and they also have a wide variety of natural, local, and American historical artifacts. They even had some artifacts/pieces of stone from international landmarks (like Vesuvius and Egyptian tombs)! All in all, a very neat little gem off the side of the highway.
