Somehow Instagram or Facebook led me to Ellie at Nut Salon and thank heavens. She's a no-bullshit, straight-shooting retro (she has a love of the 40s & 50s) delight who has, now several times, given me a cut that is manageable and has my hair in the best condition it's ever been in. She "gets" my waves and curls and somehow wrangles them into submission. Plus she's great with colour. And the best bit? I'm walking out of the salon without having to sell my imaginary first born child. (Seriously: a cut, colour and blow dry with Ellie costs me less than $180 and for me, that's value).

Aside from the questionable hygiene,the colour was way off what I had requested, my hair was cut uneven from the back and the hairdressers were completely unconcerned when I was visibly upset at how my hair had turned out. They referred me to the salon owner who apparently is never in the salon, and he flat out refused a refund and was very rude as well. Don't make the mistake of going here, it's not worth the cheaper prices.

Even though I had emailed after hours, Sarah was quick to reply and fit me in that week. As I walked into the beautiful Queenslander I was greeted by a personalised and creative welcome, my name spelt out (correctly) with scrabble pieces and a glass of cool water. The workroom is a mix of old charm and clean modern lines. There is no music blasting out at you, instead you get to play D.J. I went with something a little relaxing as I was in need of some pampering. To the important part, the hair. This is a woman who knows her stuff. I went in with hair the colour of watered down fanta and left with beautiful dark blonde locks, blow dried just the way I like it. Not only does she know how to colour, she actually listens to you and talks you through the process. It's like finding a hairdresser who actually cares about you and what you want. If you need a trim, that's all you get.The tiniest of trims, cutting off only what needs to be sacrificed to the split ends gods and no more. It's like finding the holy grail of hairdressers! Prices aren't cheap, but I've learned my lesson. Cheap is how I ended up with a head the colour of a glass of orange Tang. In saying that, she is by no means expensive. Sarah is upfront with costs and in my case understood the constraints of a poor student. I've finally done what many women long to do. After years, decades, of searching, I've found my hairdresser.

Making an appointment was very easy via Facebook, and Lash Me were very pleasant and accommodating with their available times. I am disappointed however by the actual treatment and service, which cost $60. Walking in, the girl who did my lashes was unable to muster a smile in greeting, and throughout the entire treatment made no attempt to make conversation, while the lady and technician next to me who were undergoing the same treatment were chatting away just fine. This is not a big deal and I don't mind lying there in silence, but it wasn't what I expected after the friendly customer service on facebook. I made it clear this was my first ever eyelash anything, and it would've been nice if she had told me what was involved, how long it would take, and if I could ensure I was comfortable as my eyes would be sealed shut for 40 minutes! Afterwards, she didn't tell me what I needed to do or avoid either, and I only discovered by an internet search afterwards that I'm not supposed to wear eye makeup for 24 hours. I am mixed Aussie-Latino-Asian and my lashes are fine, straight and not long, however they aren't as stumpy and difficult to curl as some other Asian girls. I'd consider them average length. I was looking forward to this lash lift as it's designed to lift the lashes up at the root, so it is perfect for Asian girls with downwards-pointing lashes, and thus would be extra great for me! I was shocked however when I looked in the mirror after the procedure and saw no great improvement whatsoever, except for one clump of 3-4 lashes which stuck up much more than the others. There was just a slight fanning out of my lashes, and I can achieve a much more dramatic look with a cheap eyelash curler. I'm not sure if the failure of the lash lift was due to the procedure itself, which might not be able to deliver what it purports to, or if the fault lies with the technician and her skill. In her defence, she left the solution on longer just to ensure the curl would work, and used a size 'Small' silicone pad, but it still didn't work. I'm not sure why it works for others and not for me, when my lashes are not the worst of my features by far! Nonetheless, I really feel as though I just grabbed three $20 bills from my purse and plunged them down the toilet. Lash Me seems really great for lash extensions, but I would not recommend a lash lift.

I'd never tried it, and I can tell you waxing your eyebrows doesn't even come close. Apparently when you wax you still often leave the root of the hair in the skin so the regrowth is quicker. Threading is also heaps more precise than waxing, I've never had eyebrows like this. They also do the full range of beauty treatments at very reasonable prices (including super cheap waxing), and Rani is amazing at fitting you in for last minute appointments. I don't think I'll ever go to another salon when I've got Kelvin Grove Hair and Beauty.

She uses threading on my face and eyebrows, and I don't even have to pluck between monthly sessions. Her threading technique is incredibly precise, and as a person with fairly thick eyebrow hair, the precision is invaluable. Rani is friendly, and has become a really good friend over the years I've been coming to her for waxing. I can trust her, and that's not really something you always find at a beauty salon. She's always more than willing to reshuffle her schedule to fit in an emergency appointment, and even when she's really busy she manages to me through in perfect time. If Rani ever left Kelvin Grove I would be sure to follow her wherever she went. She's that good.
