    King of Shoyu Ramen
    Michael L.

Walking down dundas feeling some ramen cause it was snowing in april, and saw a small line in front of sansotei. But I didn't feel like standing in line in the cold so walked over to kenzo. Ordered the King of Kings ramen which came in at $15. The bowl came with really thin noodles, thick pieces of pork (as opposed to super thin slices of pork belly), a bunch of shredded green onions, carrots, bamboo shoots, and bean sprouts, and two half eggs. Honestly, eating the noodles reminds me of the wonton noodle soup I would get at cantonese restaurants in chinatown. I would prefer thicker chewier noodles that most ramen places use. Portion sizes are definitely larger than other ramen shops. I think I've always been pretty biased against kenzo because their choice of ingredients compared to other popular ramen shops around the city are pretty different. I mean, it's still "ramen" I guess by definition, and kenzo markets these bowls as an "original" take on japanese ramen. As far as a bowl of noodle soup, it was enjoyable. Flavor was average, but portions I suppose make up for it. The soup reminded me of the kind of soup I would get at a korean restaurant. Definitely less waiting here compared to other japanese ramen places.

    Netsu Ramen and Yakisoba

Ramen is always a must in almost every city I visit. This one caught my eye as I was dashing to the Uncle Tetsu's Japanese Cheesecake bakery. The prices are decent, especially when converted to USD. I ordered the Netsu Ramen with chicken. When I ordered it, the server offered to have them make the broth spicier, which was awesome, although I do wish they did have extra chili on the side to make it spicier! It had mushrooms, which I thought was odd. They provide a generous portion for ramen, however, there isn't a lot of meat included with the bowl. It was definitely not the best ramen I've eaten though due to the lack of spices and meat. My friend ordered the Yakisoba. I can't necessarily speak to this, but she did say it was good. I would definitely recommend this place though, as it is worth trying. They also accept credit cards, which is also a major plus.

I don't know why they only have 3 stars. This place has pretty good ramen! The restaurant is on the smaller side and yes, doesn't have the best lighting, but my experience wasn't that bad. Husband and I went around 6pm (Sunday) and it wasn't busy at all. We were seated immediately and were given the menu and the specials. We ordered the Netsu ramen and Tonkatsu. I ordered the Netsu ramen to be extra spicy and they did a REALLY good job making it hot! Loved it! The broth was so refreshing and it had a lot of different veggies. The Tonkatsu was a bit underwhelming. Usually Japanese places have a crisp, flaky battering, but this place was just average. The service was good. We initially sat at a table right beneath the air conditioner where it was super cold, and we requested changing the tables. They were very responsive, and immediately worked on turning off the air conditioner. Definitely would come back for the ramen!

Very average, not sure what the hype is about as the food and service was beyond poor. Sorry but I can't even write about this as everything was so under average... Keep Eating, but not here. Angela

    Tonkotsu Ramen. Full of Flavorrr

Tons of flavor. It might have been from a lack of food but I really enjoyed the tonkotsu ramen here. It was really flavorful and savory. If my friend and I were not short on time, I probably have came back for another dish. Other than the food, the location is okay. The service was average with the waiters coming occasionally to refill water. There was a time when the waiter was rushing to fill our glasses then ended up spilling some water to the side. I mean like he filled two glasses in like 2 seconds kind of rush. The location is smaller since it is in the city. Overall, tasty ramen and I wanna check it out if I'm around the area. It is closer to a 3.3-3.5 out of 5 stars.

Decided to order kenzo with some friends. The food came really fast and was still super warm when we got it. The gyoza and takoyaki and ramen were all delicious. The karage was underwhelming unfortunately though

After being to all 3 locations of Kenzo Ramen in Toronto, This particular Kenzo now officially won "The Worse Services" and "The Most Unfriendly Waitstaff" award. Though I cannot fault the food... the Ramens we ordered were excellent... But in order to eat that Ramen we have to endure crappy and unfriendly services?!! No smile, No greetings... Just point...at the empty table You ask for something, no acknowledgement.. if you lucky you might get what you request? No Thanks, No Bye... For me is BYE... since now your location is NOT the only one in town!!

Dining room small as if in Japan. I was tempted to try champon because I hadn't had it in nearly 20yrs when I was living over there. But I went with the tonkatsu. Pretty decent but overpriced.

Didn't know DonDon does not open for lunch in the weekend, so ended up here.... So..."Roasted Pork Shoulder" is the same as the really dry charsu they served...$3.50 for the three slices....Eggs were overcooked.... I'm sorry, I really should remember how bad their food is and not come back if I can help it.....

Being in the Yonge-Dundas Square area yesterday, ramen comes to mind. We were hoping to try Sansotei but as usual there is a line up outside. We decided not to wait and I knew there were a few more ramen places so we went next over to Kenzo across the street to see if they had a table. It was packed as well but luckily a table for 3 just opened up. This was our first time at this Kenzo location. I still remember when my husband and I looked very hard for ramen places 10 years ago and Kenzo at the Yonge and Steeles location was one of the few traditional ramen shops around at that time. Now, there are ramen shops everywhere. We got the Shoyu ramen and the Tonkotsu ramen. Both were good but nothing too special. The regular size has a decent portion but you may want upsize for extra $1 for more noodles. What really stand out was the gyoza (pan fried dumplings). These were delicious! I would come back just for the gyoza. I wasn't even going to order it as $8.95 for 6 pieces was a little pricey but it was totally worth it.

Black Garlic ramen...it was so bland and when I told them, they said there's garlic already. Really???

Don't bother stepping in if you are looking for an authentic bowl of Ramen - it's NOT legit even though they speak Japanese! Least to say, there is a reason why I WAS 'THE' only Asian there...but by all means this was not my first choice. I only walked in because the competition across the street had trouble in the kitchen. Seriously, don't go here if you are looking for a comforting bowl of noodles to slurp on - skip it!

    Tonkatsu Ramen

I went to Kenzo after a rough night out drinking. It was a nice warm bowl of ramen that was well needed to help my recovery. I ordered the Tonkatsu Ramen which was not too salty (a problem I've experienced at other ramen shops) and the noodles had a good texture. The pork shoulder was good but a bit dry for my preference. The flavours are to par but not enough to make it my favourite. My friend also ordered the Yakisoba which was good and chewy but on the oily side.

Okay. Let me put this out there, I'm no pro at determining the ultimate Ramen dish. I can tell what has a good flavour and definitely if things are under or overcooked. I just moved here from Vancouver. A place known for it's incredible range of Asian cuisine including that thing called Ramen. My friend took me here telling me that i must try this. I'm always a little weary but new city, new food - why not! I was pleasantly surprised! the noodles were tasty with just the right consistency. The broth was inhale-able (is that a word?) We also ordered their gyoza. Wow! The filling was divine! Not soggy or overcooked. It beats Kintaro`s Ramen and gyoza in Vancouver any day! The bad side of this place is the service. They forgot the water and it seemed like they completely missed the boat on getting the gyoza to our table but it came after we were half way finished our Ramen. I would lie to say the reason why would be the lunch rush but there was just us and another table. i can't imagine the mayhem at rush hour so I'm glad to go during its down time. ps...good value for your pocket

The seafood and tonkotsu broth was rich, savory, and full of flavor. It was a little too salty to drink on its own, but perfect for dipping the noodles. The only thing to note is that the cold noodles stayed quite firm even after sitting in the broth for a while, so if you prefer a softer texture, I would recommend asking for hot noodles instead. The soft-boiled egg was also really good, slightly sweet, chilled, and very flavorful. We also tried the Spicy Red Miso ramen, which was not actually very spicy and leaned a little sweet. The broth was pleasant, though my teammate felt there were so many onions and green onions that they covered some of the miso flavor. The chashu, however, was excellent, with a really nice balance of lean meat and fat without feeling greasy. The takoyaki was classic and well done, crisp on the outside, soft in the middle, with generous pieces of octopus inside. The karaage was also very solid, crispy outside and juicy inside, with a seasoning that had a clear ginger and cooking wine aroma. Overall, a very enjoyable meal, especially if you like rich broths and comforting Japanese side dishes.

My friend had the King of Kings as our server said this is one of their most popular choices. I opted for the Spicy Charsu. Now I understand some people can't handle heat but I live off of Purple Tongue hot sauce which is made with some pretty hot peppers. I asked for a level one and the lady explained that the spice level on the Charsu was a whole series of levels higher than the King of Kings. I get that . Give me the heat. Anywho, she was comfortable with giving me 0.5 but said I could make it hotter if need be. Ok, better to start smaller I guess. They put some sauce on the side which I added to my bowl. Personally I found the 0.5 a nice tingle; it was good. Made my nose run. But I'm totally getting the level 1 next time. My friend however tried a sip of my broth, spit it out and said poison poison because of the heat Mind you, his King of Kings was a level 1. Which to me tasted creamy and delicious. I love a good pork bone soup and I opted for the Spicy Charsu because of the pork bone base. I loved the broth. It was perfection. The noodles were so fresh . The portion size was enormous. I kept eating and more noodles appeared. The Charsu had an amazing flavor to it . Smoky and delicious . My friend is a larger man and even he commented on the portion size saying he would be ok with a smaller size as he was so full. Good portions for your money. We also had the Gyoza and the TakoYaki. The TakoYaki was soft and loaded with the delicious sauce. The Gyoza were enormous. We were both 100% satisfied with our visit and will be back for sure.

The concerned server told me that it may be painful, but being the chili head that I am, I gladly took on the challenge. It was a larger bowl than their regular size and my ramen came topped with lots of corn, some mushrooms, bean sprouts and 6 large pieces of chasu. The broth was magma red, but it was not as spicy as I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, it was spicy but not to the point where it would warrant a warning. The spicy broth tasted like a mix of Buldak sauce and Capsaicin, but didn't have much depth. I finished my ramen, broth and all and enjoyed most of the experience. The least favorite was the chasu and the egg as chasu did not taste fresh, and I could not taste the char on them at all. The egg was over-cooked and under marinated which was disappointing. It's still one of the few ramen options in Durham but can't say it's comparable to the other Kenzo locations.

Reach ten stamps and you get a free bowl of ramen. - The chashu is excellent! My rating is 4.5 stars. I'm rounding down. Last Tuesday, I had my monthly 7 am meeting with a bunch of technical writing peers from around the world. It's quite the meeting that typically lasts for four hours. Luckily, we ended earlier than usual. It meant that my workday ended at around 3:30 pm. It was perfect, as I had a concert to attend several hours later. Normally, I don't do dinner before a concert. I grab a quick bite to each before I head downtown. This time, since I was done work early, I felt that having an early dinner was worthwhile. I drove downtown and parked in a lot that seems to be my usual spot whenever I'm attending a concert at Massey Hall. My original plan was to find an eatery close to the concert venue. I spotted Hokkaido Ramen Santouka steps away. I wanted ramen! I walked in and there was a sign that said to wait. I had no wait time. A woman and the entire staff greeted me. I asked for a table for me and got one. It was great. Seating between tables and diners is close together. You definitely overhear conversations and you can't help it. The man next to me had stretched his foot under my table. I didn't notice that he was in my space until I uncrossed my leg and my foot hit his. I listened to two friends next to me. The man seemed to take charge over what he and his female friend should eat, which was interesting. He gave the impression that he was an expert until the server came over and he had a ton of questions. It's always fun being an observer and listener. I had no choice but to listen to her dating experiences. I got a menu. I knew what I wanted. My server came over and was ready to take my order. I got these items: - Diet Coke - Miso chachu ramen, with bamboo shoot held - Jammy egg and corn as extra toppings The menu doesn't tell you what ingredients you get in each type of ramen. However, it does come with a photo. I asked how large a large bowl of ramen was. My server was great pointing up to a display of three bowls. I went large. The photo indicated that my miso ramen had bamboo shoots. I'm not a fan of them, so I asked that they be omitted. I also added a jammy egg and corn. I got a cold can of Diet Coke. A frosted glass with ice accompanied it. I was happy. I love an icy cold drink. This one was excellent. I loved that it was extra cold. My bowl of ramen had arrived. I was excited to dive in. My miso chachu ramen was delicious. The miso flavour was on point. I drank most of the broth, which speaks volumes on how yummy it was. The chachu was tender and had the best balance of pork and fattiness. The number of slices was generous. The ramen was chewy and perfectly done. I loved the corn and jammy egg. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed my ramen without these two key toppings. They worked nicely with the green onions. What prevents me from giving this place a perfect rating is flagging a server to get me water, or to frankly flag any staffer for something, such as ordering dessert or getting the bill. It took effort and hand-waving to get their attention. It took two tries to get a glass of water with ice. I was happy when I got some after I had finished my Diet Coke. It was equally as cold and yummy. I ordered dessert. The menu is stuck on each table. I asked what ice cream flavours were available. There were two flavours and I went with matcha. It was rich, creamy, and full of strong matcha flavour. The scoop of ice cream was generous. I loved the small spoon, which allowed this dessert to last a lot longer. I asked for the bill. I got a payment machine. I used my credit card to pay and tip. All was great. I used the washroom before I headed over to explore the downtown area. The washrooms are downstairs. It's an older building, so accessibility is an issue. There are two single-stall washrooms. The one that I used was clean. Because it's an older building, the ceiling is low. I am just shy of six feet in height. I made it without hitting my head on the ceiling. If you are six feet and taller, you'll need to duck to make sure you don't bang your head. Staff say goodbye to you when you leave. It was a nice touch, although I don't know what they are saying to me in Japanese. They could be swearing at me and I wouldn't know. I had a wonderful experience here. If you don't mind sitting close to folks and waving your arms like a maniac to get your server's attention, come here. This ramen joint appeared as a Michelin place in 2017. I can see why. The food quality is excellent. (200)
