Kids want to practice swimming on a vacation in Philadelphia, found this place to our surprise, it's big, clean and easy to find parking.

This one is up there with our faves so far! Not sure how I missed this one as I've taken my daughters to the playground just on the other side of the fence many times since they were young. The pool however, is actually located ON Fairmount. (2 hr free street parking all around) There are cement bleachers and cushions for lounging, as well as neat little cubbies to place your belongings. The pool is immaculate and separated by rope from the 3 footer end and the 4 ft plus end. Two lifeguards were on duty at all times, one on each side of the pool. They were playing some popular tunes my girls and I had a great time jamming to in the star. Nothing too loud, but made the experience that much more fun. I have never heard music at any other public pools. There are restrooms right there and they weren't awful. Decent in fact. Lol The rules are fairly simple-you must take a quick shower before entering the water and to refrain from taking photos. (I snapped just a few before they officially opened for you guys) They have a little garden, which is a nice touch! Everyone was super friendly taking time to get to know one another and chatting about the neighborhood. It was mostly filled with residents from NoLibs, but I'm going to say it was worth the trek from across town. Nothing like enjoying free access to a large pool without having to leave the city. You can easily make a nice day of it and hit up one of the casual restaurants nearby afterwards...Abbaye, Wahlburgers, Apricotstone etc My kiddos begged to return the following day and we basically have our own private pool just outside the city.

One of the many great reasons to be an Ardmorian would be that we have one of the Great Deals of…read morethe Century: The Ardmore Avenue Pool. This pool, completely renovated in 2004, is large enough to have fun but small enough to be able to spot your young 'un from anywhere you sit. The entrance is through Vernon Young Park, another gem with a full kids' playground, basketball & tennis courts, a large playing field for baseball, flag football, soccer, etc. and the Ardmore Avenue Community Center. So, if the young un's don't want to swim, they can play too. When you enter, you pass through either the male or female changing areas complete with lockers and showers as well as restrooms. There are two pools - a good sized toddler pool with a zero step entry, water spouts and a water mushroom play feature. Maximum depth 18 inches. Then there is the 'larger' pool, also with a zero step entry, a water slide and maximum depth of 5'. Separating the two are a low fence, some bushes, and a shade awning over some grass. Surrounding both pools are picnic tables with umbrellas. Water toys are permitted in the baby pool area. The pools are staffed with lifeguards who change station regularly to stay alert. There is no snack bar, which is in some ways a blessing (no $9 fries!). Many of the local restaurants deliver 'to the pool', and if you want you can easily leave and walk to many of them too. Parking? Well, that's the one star off. It's street only, and it can be a bit of a challenge. I don't want them to make a parking lot by any means, but it does take away from the experience. Also, you bring your own chairs, blankets, etc, which can make for a haul. Maybe the Township will get wise and start a business to rent chairs on site (hint, hint). Now, the thing that makes this really GREAT. The cost to join? For a family of four, residents of the Township, about $70. For the season. Really. Over 65 year old residents are free. Yes, really. That is not a typo. It's under a hundred dollars. A year. Well, a summer. The pool is open Memorial Day - Labor Day. (Residents of Narberth Borough can join but at a higher rate as can a limited number of residents in Ardmore, Haverford Township, again at a higher rate.) Like I said, one of the Great Deals of the Century. Here in wonderful Ardmore.

Despite the fact that the membership is extremely expensive and at times it gets overly crowded,…read morethe fun times we still have here are priceless. There are five pools, two concession stands, a playground, restrooms and shower facilities. We didn't try the food because we always brought our own. It appeared to be your average concessions such as hamburgers, fries, drinks, packaged ice cream pops, and chicken fingers. They also suggest ordering delivery service from local fast food restaurants, and some will give you a discount if you order from there. Check the bulletin board at the entrance for menus. Despite the club getting extrememly crowded, there were always enough lawn chairs and recliners around the pools. The pools we frequented were the baby and splash pool because I have a two year old. They're both fenced in so it makes it easy to contain your small children. The Splash pool has some bells and whistles. There are some fountains, a mushroom shaped water fall, and sprinkler's. The deepest part is 2 feet. There's a padded floor covering in the Splash Pool that got a little chewed up by the end of the season, and they didn't fix it. The Baby Pool is a sedentary 2 feet deep pool that's circular. Members bring toys and while most of us share them, there are a few kids (and moms) that suggested not sharing their toys. We went into the family pool a few times, but mostly I avoided it since my son can't swim. It gets to 5 feet deep. Besides that are two other olympic of larger sized pools for play, diving, and a lap pool. The life guards are very attentive, and it's pretty clean. My son also loves the playground. It was open from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 11am - 8pm everyday. There are various events on the calendar including parties with DJ's and "Bring a Guest for free Day". You can also book an event here for $5 per person. I suggest buying into membership early in the year when you receive a small discount. Also make sure you plan on going often because it is so expensive. If you don't plan on going often, then just get a season pass for one person and pay a $10 guest visit every time you bring one or buy a book of 10 for a discounted rate. Even though it's closed for the season, when I ask him what he wants to do today, he replies "Pool". We'll certainly become a member next year unless we acquire our own pool.
