If you happen to be reading this review today, Earth Day, you're in luck because the Kellogg bird sanctuary is free to enter on Earth Day. This place had been on my birding bucket list for quite some time when my husband and I finally got a chance to go recently. I'd seen many of my birder friends post photos of some rarely spotted gems from here, so I think my expectations were a little higher than my experience, but overall this is a super spot. You can hike around the lake, it's about a mile, or you can stick to the pads closer to the entry points and still see the majority of the bird since most stick close to the entrance since that's where the free food comes from. We did spot a sandhill crane on our hike around the late but other than that didn't see anything on that hike that we didn't see up front, but we are hikers so we enjoyed the walk. When I say 'we' spotted a sandhill crane, I should specify that my husband spotted the sandhill crane and I saw a rock. He was pointing out to me and I'm like: Is it in front of or past the big rock? And he's like: 'Beth ... it is the rock.' Seriously, lying down, they look like a big rock. Well spotted, Andrew! We wished the rescued Birds had a little more space in their enclosures ... It feels like there's enough land here that they could make larger homes so the birds that can fly little bit could do some flying. There are a wide variety of swans and ducks in the large lake and smaller pond area. Most people won't otherwise have an opportunity how to spot a black swan in the wild unless they take a very long vacation. It's an exciting time of year to visit as some of the birds are already laying eggs come on and it's fun to watch them fuss over them.

Is it worth it to go in the winter?

Hi Liam! It is great to visit in all 4 seasons! In the winter, there are aerators to keep portions of Wintergreen Lake open so there are always Canada Geese, Mallards, and Trumpeter Swans. The raptors and gamebirds are on exhibit all year. The… Read more

Jan/ 2014 About a beautiful swamp board walk: a secret garden Just before the covered bridge and trail entrance gate form the parking lot, go walk left-north, there are rest room, maple syrup log house, picnic area beside the trout creek, keep walking for about 5min. The end of the road with a driving loop, you will see the bridge to cross the creek. Cross the creek walk bridge and you will find the most beautiful little area of this forest, board walk through the swamp with water plants. Best time is in Spring green time. Stay walk along with the creek side trail ( stay with left trails) and cross the high voltage power line. You will see the maple syrup gathering place, start crumbing along with north side syrup correcting tubes you will go back to the north end of main trail. It is about 15min walk. If you like to stay in loop trail, go straight up to the bit steep trail form the main road crossing ( there are two trails go up hill, go right-south hill trail). about 50min you be back to the east side of the covered bridge to the parking lot. This is a great walk including 20 min climbing - cardio, and 15min relaxing gentle down hill, feels like taking exercise class. Have a little great time in nature! Map is available at the ranger station beside the parking lot!

I loved this campground. It's quite large with lots of lakes and bodies of water. I didn't get to hike a ton but the one trail I did hike was great and very peaceful. I reserved campsite 159. I will say that the campsite next to it was basically right on top of mine so it would be great for a group site! It was also located right by the bike/hike trail, so that was good for me but could see how it wasn't as private as other sites. Loved the check in process and great location related to Kalamazoo.

My kids had to wear sweatpants and sweatshirts in 75/80 degree weather. We couldn't go anywhere without there being poison ivy within 5 ft of us. Our group (especially my children) were all covered in mosquito bites (we are talking 10+ on each of their faces - even with using bug spray, and multiple other methods of deterring mosquitos!) The staff were rude and unprofessional. The DNR officers were belittling and grumpy toward a large family group (adults with small children). This was our first time camping at this state park... and likely the last time camping at a Michigan state park. I am so disappointed in how Michigan is using their resources to create a "family friendly" campground when the way people are treated are not reflective of that. The campsites are not safe for children. Do better for someone else's sake, Fort Custer.

Note: to get to the handicap parking, you don't park up top (and walk down those stairs, obviously!), but drive down a clearly marked accessible road down to the four handicap spaces nearer to the beach. You will still have to walk/wheel from those spots to the water. The water starts out really shallow (good for playing, if you have littles), and then goes deep pretty quickly. There is often a bunch of seaweed near to the shore, and, depending on the weather, the water can be murky. Persevere! STILL! It is a swimmable lake, and feels really good to get in the water, so close to home. There's a small playground area, a grassy area next to the sidewalks, and then, along the lakeshore, plenty of space for fishing.

This small park offers an elevated path and raised overlook and a small beach. If you work nearby, this is a great place to escape on your lunch break with a picnic and a good book. I once spotted a snowy owl in a tree adjacent to the park. Definitely a life highlight! Not the best swimming hole in the area (definitely visit Portage's Ramona Park for a bigger, better beach), but still worth the trip.
