After finding our first choice for camping on Achill Island closed for the season, we were…read moredelighted to find Lavelle Golden Strand Caravan & Camping Park still open. A stones throw from Golden Strand, we found reception closed but a "On site" sign up with a phone number. While waiting for Mr Lavelle to arrive we chatted with a very nice lady who told us to call any time to her static home if we needed anything at all. Sweet of her. So for 18 EUR for our tent, car and two people per night, we pitched up in a nicely sheltered spot between the mobile homes on the left and the sand dunes further left. Which as good because the wind was still up. We found a gas cooking hob in the TV / food preparation room, so we used that to cook a stew in relative comfort. There was even a fridge to put our food in. There was also a laundry room, where I found two of the three washing machines out of order. That was OK, because we didn't need to wash anything. The tumble dryers however did work, but for 3.80 EUR for 40 mins. Yikes! There was two shower blocks, one of which was closed for the season. The one that was open was ok. Looked clean at first, but found long black strands of hair all over the floor - ugh. The shower was free (hurrah) and looked relatively clean. The water was nice and hot, but the push start switch cut out far too quickly. I guess they save on water that way and hey the shower wasn't extra. There was no shelves, a pet peeve of mine :( There are no shops nearby, the closest thing is a petrol station back out the road about 10 KM away, in the middle of the Island. So come stocked up and prepared if you don't want to go driving again. There is a pub beside the campsite. Mastersons. A bit dated, but it had a lovely roaring fire. The locals were entertaining with their banter. An OK stay. Mr Lavelle was very nice. Initially a three star review, but gave it an extra star for the food prep room. It was nice to get out of the wind to cook.
