As I walk through the newly refurbished show room at Epic Cycles (they've come back from the…read moredevastation that the 2011 floods caused the area) I suddenly feel a sense of F.O.M.O (fear of missing out) and anxiety that my hand me down bike just isn't going to cut it in the cool stakes. I'll admit I'm being serenaded by Epic Cycles kick-a$# selection of bikes that would have people shaking their head and muttering "filthy hipster" under their breath. Thankfully my latest trip to Epic Cycles was to visit their service department. The guys were straight-shooting, easy to talk to and got the job done efficiently. Of course, in having my hand-me-down bike fixed I now need to learn to ride again. I think I'll be back to Epic to acquire some mad knee and elbow pads.

These guys do a great range of bikes, from mountain bikes, road racers, kids bikes, the popular fixie (so hot right now...) even portable folding cycles! They stock some of the more highly regarded brands like Specialized, Cannondale and Bianchi. I've got a road bike myself and have gone to Epic for a service before. For the uninitiated this might sound a little over-the-top, but modern bikes are quite sophisticated machines and require a bit of TLC. Their most basic tune-up is $49, but at the other end of the spectrum there's the 'Epic service', a complete overhaul of your entire bike, from derailleur to brakes, which has a hefty $239 price-tag. It might sound like a lot (hey, it's more than some car services) but it could be a good idea if you have a particularly advanced bike or are planning a big ride. The staff are really friendly and approachable; keen to chat even if you just want to have a browse. Roll by here if you are thinking of buying a new bike or just need accessories or a tune-up for your current ride.

You could drive by this small electric bike shop everyday and not even know it existed. In case you…read moredon't know what an electric bike is, it is a bicycle where your pedaling is assisted by an electric motor. They are perfectly legal to ride without a license or insurance and you can take it on the sidewalk and on bike paths. The bikes range from small wheeled bikes that fold in half for portability (the small wheels are great for going up hills and taking with you on buses and trains or the trunk of your car) to much larger, normal looking bikes that can go faster on the flats. You charge the battery by removing it from the bike and plugging it into a regular outlet just like a laptop computer and one charge will get you anywhere from 20-80km depending on the model (longer if you turn the motor off at various points in your ride). I decided to purchase one of these bikes because of my negative experiences using weekend trains and buses. I am not a cyclist, so powering up steep Brisbane hills didn't really appeal to me, and I didn't want to deal with all the added expenses and environmental impacts that come with car ownership. They also fully service their electric bikes and install kits that you may have purchased online. This is really the only shop in Brisbane that has a wide variety of bikes to choose from. Prices range from as low as $1500 and can quickly exceed $4000 for the premium models. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about all the bikes and they allow you to take them out for a test ride up a nearby hill as well (although they prefer to do this on Saturday due to weekday traffic issues). The shop is family operated and they even bring their kids in on the weekends, which I find quite endearing. It's great to have an electric bike shop in Brisbane!
