Very helpful people and the person there was so kind and friendly and even recommended great food places to visit. I didn't buy anything because I wanted to see the gallery that she painted at and I can only afford lithographs due to being a college student. It was a memorable moment and I will forever cherish it. My mom and I loved the Keane movie and it was always on my bucket list to visit San Francisco and see Ms. Keane gallery. I saw the film Big Eyes by Tim Burton sometime ago & thought it was interesting. As it turns out the painter Margaret Keane who the film was based on is still alive. She is 90 years old & lives in Marin County. She has a gallery in San Francisco w/ her distinct paintings from back in the day up until recent times. My friend suggested we check it out. We headed over here & am glad I did. Enjoyed the gallery & appreciated it more having seen the film. It was nice to see her original work here in person. It is interesting to see how her style has stayed similar & how it has evolved over a lifetime of painting. Some of the paintings are expensive yet they have nice poster reprints that are affordable. Please note there is no photography permitted within the gallery. Worth seeing if in the area & especially for those who enjoyed the film. read more

You know that director Tim Burton who makes all those bizarre, dark, gothic type films like Frankenweenie, Beetlejuice, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? I'm not crazy about his films for the most part but his current project "Big Eyes" is based on Keane Eyes gallery's artist, Margaret Keane. We stopped into the Dr. Seuss gallery, then our last stop was Keane Eyes Gallery. Walking into the gallery my wife and I loved one of Keane's masterpieces called "Love Makes a World of Difference", she combines sad faces and hopelessness and happy faces with hope. The left of the painting is pretty much how I looked after eating that terrible Crab Sandwich at Crab Station earlier, the right is how I'd look after a good crab sandwich. "A Good Crab Sandwich makes a world of difference too"! KEANE EYES This is the famed gallery of Margaret Keane, Yes! from the movie Big Eyes!! BIG EYES We actually stumbled upon this gallery wandering around Ghirardelli Square in SF, I was so perplexed when I saw the one-of-a-kind waifs 0 0 in the huge window from the street. I thought, "this looks familiar." My friends turned back and wondered why I had stopped. I said "Guys, we have to go in" 'KEEN' EYES Wow. We walk in and HUNDREDS of eyes are staring at us. Not human, the paintings. Just like the movie (directed by Tim Burton), these big, huge, emotional eyes made me reflect and think, on who I am and the power of human emotion - I was overcome. I was told not to take pictures and I respected that. I told my friends about the movie and Margaret Keane's struggle. They really loved her artwork. The gallery manager came over and helped us, talked to us about the movie, and educated on us about her life. He was so informative and very kind! I had no idea she was still alive; she IS alive and STILL painting, every day! She lives in the Bay Area too. Her current works of art hang in the gallery as recent as 2014! and of course, some of her earliest works hang too; I saw one dated.. 1965! From 1965 to today, wow, I really admire her tenacity and drive! As per prices, most originals were "Priced upon request", a few others around ~$3000-7000, numbered canvas prints and lithos (sometimes 300 max) were ~$300-2000, but admission and viewing of the gallery is FREE :D If you're a local who has never experienced it, or out of town planning a SF visit, I highly recommend a stop at this gallery! We visited the Keane Eyes Gallery after watching the excellent Tim Burton film "Big Eyes". It was pretty awesome to actually see Margaret Keane's artwork in person. My personal favorite gallery piece had to be one of a young girl with a flower in her hair, which looked quite Hawaii-inspired. The gentleman at the gallery we spoke with was very sociable and insightful, talking with us about Margaret, her work, and the recent film. We had a private tour of this spectacular gallery. I think you do need a reservation, we made one. All the beauty captured here was really amazing. The imagination of this artist is truly brilliant. The price range varies on the piece, size, original or copy, if you are on a budget you can buy a copy the size of a postcard or if you chose to splurge on something bigger you can do that too. After moving to SF in '98, I had seen Keane's work only a couple times before I saw the "Big Eyes" in the theaters a couple years ago. It wasn't until I saw the movie that I was really impressed with the artist and her struggle to get credit for HER work. It's a cozy, humble gallery. I liked that. Nick (I'll call him the art consultant) was very personable and non-judgmental. This is definitely a stop for me when I tour visitors. Please note that this review has NOTHING to do with the artist. I love her work and think she is so inspiring. Hands down I think she is amazing. This review is for the gallery itself which was my #1 priority on our trip to San Francisco. We showed up Friday March 4 and called to see if the gallery would be open that day or Sat March 5. We were told it would be open Sat from 2:30 until at least 6. We made it clear we would stop by and hung up.... Come Sat we arrived about 3:00 to see multiple people standing outside the door. They informed us that they had called and the man that answered stated he would be there in 15-20 min. So we wandered the gallery next door, then sat on the steps, then wandered Ghirardelli square (which is right across the street), then went and sat in our car since it was raining and we were freezing. We called the number which went straight to voicemail. We literally wasted 90 minutes waiting before we gave up and left at what was then 2 hours past when he said he would be there. I know her work, I am aware of her prices and we were in San Francisco for one day with every intention of buying from this gallery.... cash in hand (yes, that's a lot of cash). Clearly I have NO idea what happened to prevent him from being here at the stated times and not answer his phone. I do hope nothing bad happened in his travels. Sadly I have a feeling there were other much less acceptable excuses for this behavior which I can 100% say cost a sale from at least one party that day. Very disappointed. read more

I love this artist's work. My reason for wanting to visit the gallery was sentimental, as I remember seeing her work as a child growing up in the 60's. My mom may have even had prints. I have one print given to me through a mutual friend of the artist and another I bought from a 2nd hand store that I wanted to get verified that it was a Keane print. I was visiting San Francisco for the 2nd time (the 1st year I wasn't able to make it to the gallery) and wanted to visit the gallery to see if I could obtain more prints or a painting of Ms. Keane's work. On Tuesday, August the 2nd I phoned for an appointment for that day. The gentleman on the line said the gallery is open from 2-8 pm on Wednesdays. He sounded stern. So the next day, Wednesday, my friend, her kids and I caught the Bart downtown and walked the rest of the way to the museum (a few miles). We reached the gallery at 2:30 which was locked with lights off. My friend called the gallery's number, and the gentleman said it would be open more like 3:30. We hung out at Ghiradelli Sq then came back at 3:30 where another woman was also waiting. At this time in addition to the locked door there was a chain around the handles. We all waited around, and the woman left after awhile and we left about 4:15-4:30 when my friend's husbby picked us up on his way home from work. I was really disappointed, as I was a fan of the work way before the movie. Don't understand why if appointments/arrangements or hours are setup why they are not stuck to. Let your yes mean yes. read more

I saw Big Eyes in a art museum in Denmark close to Copenhagen yesterday. Now I understand the big eyes. When I was a child I remember looking at all the cards ect. The story never reached Denmark (I am 57 years old). The story is beautiful and dramatic- if I will come to San Fransisco I will look for your galleri. I was in SF 1987 (honymoon) and again companied with my 2 children 6 years ago. (devorced). We had a fantastic time living private in Mission. They take FOREVER to ship their online orders, never mind that my order is for the normal open edition prints, I don't want to imagine how long it would take them to ship an original. I understand that they don't control shipping time once its on the road but its been a week and the order is still processing???
