Due to the DJ firings and resignations that have happened over the past several months, I am updating my review to "not good" because the current Executiive Director, Kelly Wells, and her accomplice, Gary Pierson (president of the Board of Directors) are systematically shutting the community out of their decision-making process and in fact aren't even living up to the guidelines that were set forth in the stations original mission statement and bylaws. KDHX was once the jewel of St. Louis radio. In 2023 current management has squandered the community support it once had and made the station almost unlistenable. A total of 13 DJs have been fired and about the same number have resigned or are striking in support. Since these ill-considered moves by management the station has been plagued with dead air and on-air profanity, and many hours of air time are being filled with boring playlists. KDHX is now far from being a jewel. Let's hope there is a management change SOON. read more

KDHX offers so much to St. Louis. It's an independent radio station that plays every possible genre. So many radio stations are owned by corporations that dictate that the DJ's play the same songs again and again. Not here. A variety of talented musicians (The Jayhawks, Nathaniel Rateliff, Iron & Wine...) will drop in the studio for three-song sets. The quality of these performances on Soundcloud and YouTube is phenomenal! They also have a sweet live music space in the building called The Stage. Occasionally, they host music festivals that showcase local and national talent. The staff and volunteers are top-notch. They have a passion for what they do. KDHX is the best radio station on the planet. St. Louis wouldn't be the same without it. read more

Once upon a time, KDHX was an outstanding radio station, populated by a wide range of highly skilled and knowledgable DJs and programmers that always brought something fresh to the airwaves. Sadly, this is no longer the case. Over the course of the last four years, through gross mismanagement by the "leadership" staff. The quality of the station has declined miserably. Most notably, over the last several months thirteen long time volunteers (we're talking about people that have dedicated anywhere from 15 to nearly 40 years of their lives to the betterment of the station) have been dismissed without cause or due process. As a result of these firings an additional 23 volunteer DJs have walked out on strike, in solidarity with those that were dismissed without recourse. Calls for redress and arbitration have fallen on deaf ears, and the station now has over 40 hours a week of automated music as programming every week. The community has been removed from the equation of what is purported to be community driven public radio. What remains of the programming of this once great radio station is in a shambles. There are a few stalwart DJs hanging on by a thread at the station, but even they are at threat of dismissal without notice. You would be better served to seek out another community radio station for your listening pleasure. WWOZ from New Orleans, and KEXP from Seattle are still fine examples of what true community radio station can be. Unfortunately, KDHX can no longer count itself as a member of that category. read more

KDHX is the best radio station in St. Louis. Period. Forget about all that "music" that 105.7 FM, 107.7 FM and 94.7 spoonfeed you. I grew up thinking that kind of stuff was all there was, too, but finally finding a good community radio station a decade ago changed that. Don't let "community radio" scare you. Sure, there are a few novice DJs and some gardening shows, but KDHX is no hippie-dippy radio station. Instead, 88.1 FM is the place that has the best, most varied music selection within its frequency range. No matter if you like punk, folk, rockabilly, pop, international, electronic or Irish, KDHX has something for everybody -- AND its DJs will pull out stuff you've never heard before or had completely forgotten about. Demographics, charts and conglomerates do not decide what is played......by and large, You do! I love everything about this radio station! When (if) I finally leave St. Louis, there will be a handful of things that I will truly miss. Very high on that list will be KDHX. My word, what an awesome radio station. Yes, once in awhile you turn it on and it's Albanian folk hour. Or it's late at night and there's some boring, tranced-out techno stuff going down. But that comes with the territory. And I'll embrace it if it means I get to hear all the great, weird, random, brilliant stuff that you hear on KDHX, and only on KDHX, all the time. There are at least a dozen great bands I heard first on KDHX, a whole bunch of old stuff that would have skipped right by if I hadn't heard it here, and many many old forgotten favorites its DJs have dredged up. Throw in all the cool stuff they do promoting local music and training community media, and this is no mere radio station. It's something of a civic treasure. St. Louis is lucky to have it. read more

KDHX is one of the rare stations that actually uses real live people to curate its music. The DJs aren't slick commercial professionals but rather music lovers with deep, deep knowledge of music. My boycott of radio is over. Growing up, my dad listened to the Irish and bluegrass shows religiously, and dictated that we did too. I switched over to Greaser's Lunchbox as I got older before moving away from St. Louis and completely giving up on radio. I hadn't listened to the radio in years until a week or so ago a friend sent me a text late Thursday night, simply saying, "Turn on KDHX. I've found your show." Being at work, I didn't get this text until hours later, but knowing this friend knew my musical tastes well... I looked up the radio programs on that evening to figure out which one she was talking about. That's when I discovered the playlists of not one but two radio shows back-to-back that blew my mind (i.e. played music I actually listen to on my ipod). Easily the best of STL after 7pm, especially the indie, electronic, and hip hop shows (which themselves are worth 4+ stars) that feature new music in active, relevant genres. The same cannot be said for the brain meltingly monotonous blues, bluegrass, "americana" (which evidently only means creaky folk) and old music overload that dominates all the daytime slots (zero stars). It would be *really* great radio if this station could get its act together, hire a full time music director, and focus aggressively on new music, local artists in active, relevant genres (free formatted), ditch the endless blocks of music styles starting with "blue" and put selected local artists' new releases in heavy rotation. It's high time listeners demanded more and made donations contingent on revamping the station. Make your donations contingent on expanded indie/hip hop/electronica, and reduced blues/grass. read more
